Rivers Available for Selection These eight Canadian rivers , currently not included in the Canadian Heritage Rivers System , are available for selection : Shubenacadie River, Nova Scotia Miramichi River, New Brunswick Bow River, Alberta Peace River, Alberta / British Columbia Richelieu River, Québec Saint -Maurice River, Québec Columbia River, British Columbia Mackenzie River, Northwest Territories No sign -up or notification of which river you have selected is required. The Canadian Heritage River System (CHRS) Website: chrs.ca/en The Canadian Heritage Rivers System is “Canada’s n ational river conservation program” (CHRS, 2020 , n.p. ). The goal of the CHRS is described in this way: From coast to coast to coast, Canadian Heritage Rivers offer visitors a chance to experience great waterways, learn about their rich history, and share in their stewardship. The Canadian Heritage Rivers System helps recognize and conserve these outstanding rivers that are an enduring part of our national heritage and identity. Canadian Heritage Rivers System (2020 , n.p. ) Currently 4 1 Canadian rive rs have been recognized with heritage river status. There is a nomination and designation process that must be followed for a river to be added to the list. Reproduced from: Grand River Conservation Authority . (2020) . Heritage River designation . https://www.grandriver.ca/en/our -watershed/Heritage -River -Designation.aspx 2 Learning About the CHRS Before proceeding to the assignment description below , you need to read more about the Canadian Heritage River System on the CHRS website to understand why and how certain rivers have been recognized as Canadian heritage rivers. See the three pages in the dropdown list under the heading ‘The Rivers’ (namely ‘What Are Heritage Rivers?’, ‘Heritage River Story Maps’, and ‘Designation Process’ ). More information about how to execute this learning process will be provided in class. Assignment Description At present none of the eight rivers available for selection is in the list of 4 1 Canadian heritage rivers – but any of them could be nominated for inclusion. Therefore, the task s for this assignment are : 1. To create a persuasive report in the style of a policy paper that advocates for your selected river to be designated as a Canadian heritage river. Information Sources In order to present a persuasive argument, y ou will need to conduct research to gather relevant sources that will help you to write a persuasive report about the characteristics of the selected river in alignment with how rivers are nom inated for inclusion in the Canadian Heritage Rivers System . A broad range of sources may be consulted. In comparison to what was expected for the Literature Review assignments, a higher proportion of lower -quality sources may be used – but higher -quality sources are still expected to be included. Characteristics of the Persuasive Report The exercise submission needs to have characteristics of a policy paper : • It needs to contain sufficient information to present a persuasive argument to the reader . • It needs to attract and hold the reader’s attention. • It needs to be well presented in order to be taken seriously. This does not mean that presentation quality does not matter; it means that formal and traditional academic style may not be the best way to present your persuasive report . 3 A separate title page is not mandatory; however, somewhere in your report you must include the following: • Information that clearly i dentif ies you as its author. • The date on which you submit the assignment . • An indication for the reader of the context in/for which the report was prepar ed. Citations and References Information from sources must be cited using proper author -date in -text citation formatting. A properly – formatted corresponding list of references must be provided. The Style Guide shows how to cite sources that do not clearly identify a person as the author (see 5.2.4), and how to format references for websites and web pages (see 5.3.8). See Section 2.8 in the Style Guide about formatting and citing illustrative material. For illustrative material reproduced or adapted from a source, the Style Guide shows how to acknowledge the source (see pages 6 and 8, and pages 2 and 4 in the sample paper, for examples).
