Landscape Architecture 260                                                         Spring 2019

History of American Landscape Architecture

Visual Journal (5 entries)

Overview:   For this project you will keep a “journal” of what you find interesting in landscape design and make connections to what you have learned in this class. For all entries you will choose your own subjects to observe and evaluate. Your observations, evaluation, and comparisons will be communicated using combinations of graphics (images, photographs, sketches, diagrams, and other drawings), and text (labels, notes, and descriptions). Each entry should be 2-3 pages in length.

Project Purpose and Learning Outcomes:

  • Broaden awareness of the wide variety of landscape design concepts, project types, spatial

arrangements, function and uses, and site details through observation and evaluation.

  • Make connections to historic and notable landscapes as presented in the lectures and readings of this course.

  • Practice using different media to communicate observations and evaluations.

Requirements:

  • 5 Journal Entries (10 points each)

At least 3 primary direct personal observations in the “real world”

No more than 2 using completely secondary sources (i.e. the web, magazines, books, etc.)

At least 3 must include some hand sketching and diagrams but you may supplement your own sketches, drawing, and diagrams with pictures and diagrams from the web, magazine, and books (be sure to credit your sources – see the )

Entries must be annotated with your own observations and must include i.e. labels, notes, descriptions/explanations and comparisons to a type of landscape presented in the course

  • Subject matter must be landscape related but can vary in size or scale, e.g. details of site features/fixtures to overviews of entire projects at different scales

  • Include as much of the following information that is readily available. By readily available I mean easily findable. I don’t want you spending large amounts of time trying to find the name of the designer, the project name etc. The point is for you to find interesting landscape related projects and relate them to something you’ve learned in this class.

Location (UW Madison; State Street; Beijing, China)

Project Name (unknown: Peace Park; Tanner Residence)

Designer (unknown; Peter Walker; Maya Lin)

Subject (garden, national park; bench; conservation area; housing development)

  • Entries will be uploaded to the appropriate dropbox on our Learn@UW Canvas website

Examples: I am not looking for formal reports for this assignment. In a separate .pdf document on Learn@UW I have included excerpts from the published sketchbooks of influential and important landscape architecture Lawrence Halprin which I hope will give you some insight into the concept of a visual journal.
