  • Program Beginnings and Reflections

INTRODUCTION

These are exciting and challenging times for business, and the human resource management (HRM) professional is increasingly being properly recognized as a partner in organizational leadership. In this program, you have been well-prepared to excel as a complete business partner with skills and abilities relevant for all aspects of human resources (HR). This is your opportunity to assimilate and apply your expertise.

TOGGLE DRAWERHIDE FULL INTRODUCTION

Unlike the courses you have taken up to this point, in this course you are asked to demonstrate what you have learned throughout the program. The approach here is not to digest and evaluate new material, but instead, to create a structure or paradigm of HR grounded in sound theory and practice. You are asked to take what you have learned throughout the program and create something relevant and useful. The shift in how you approach the course may be unsettling, but you will find that with hard work, you will succeed. This is your moment to display your talents.

Prior to beginning this course, review your previous work in this program, program competencies and outcomes, and your own experiences with HRM. There are many important HR functions and programs to assess. The most important question may be whether HRM in your organization (or the organization chosen based on your reading) has become a strategic partner within the organization. More importantly, does HR leadership exhibit the competencies necessary to lead an organization through a period of more uncertainty and change? You will address many other issues throughout the course.

As you work through this course, imagine yourself as an HRM leader who must lead and enhance the role of HRM in your organization. Consider the area you think needs improvement to be more effective. This reflection may lead you to selecting an HRM function such as recruitment, selection, compensation, legal compliance and so on for the topic of your course project. You can also examine HRM-related issues and select a HRM topic related to programs such as enhancing employee motivation, improving quality, or reducing employee turnover through retention strategies. You will be creating a plan that is innovative and research based.

Human Resources Assessment Exam

The Human Resources Assessment Exam that you will take in this unit is part of the continuous quality improvement commitment from Capella University’s School of Business. It is part of SOB programmatic accreditation with the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The assessment exam results will help ensure that learners are being provided with the best possible educational experience.

The Human Resource Assessment Exam covers topics taught in the Capella Human Resource Management program that are aligned to the topics required for accreditation. This exam assesses the baseline data the school needs for its analysis. The exam assesses the foundational knowledge areas.

No extra preparation is required to take this exam. Once you have completed the exam, you will receive a Certificate of Completion, which you will submit in u01d2.

Note: This is a required activity.

OBJECTIVES

To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:

  1. Compare foundational disciplines and topics within human resource management.
  2. Use strategic thinking to identify and explain a problem or opportunity within human resource management.

Presentation Development and Peer Review Preparation

In the next unit, the focus will be to give and receive feedback to help you improve the draft of your final HRM Evaluation Improvement Plan and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.

The thoughtful feedback you give your peers will not only help them improve their work but will also provide you with insights about your own project. In preparation for the peer review process, follow these steps:

  1. Review the HRM Effectiveness Improvement Plan course project description to learn about the assessment criteria for the final project and presentation. Both the plan and your presentation will be graded based on the HRM Effectiveness Improvement Plan scoring guide.
  2. Develop a PowerPoint presentation that provides a summary of your HRM Evaluation Improvement Plan. The presentation should synthesize all of your research and summarize your final plan for improving effectiveness. Your presentation should include 5–10 slides, using concise, bulleted text. Use the notes section of PowerPoint to outline supporting research and cite references. Information about using PowerPoint is available on the Microsoft Tutorials page on iGuide, linked in the Resources.
  3. Complete your draft by adding all the components you have completed thus far and integrate them with an introduction and a conclusion. Check the course project description for specific details on how to structure your paper. Make sure all of your work is clean and in appropriate draft format before posting.
  4. Post a draft of your plan and presentation in the discussion area. In your post, include a list of items on which you want others to focus when they review your project. For example, you may want to ask a peer reviewer to carefully read your conclusion to ensure that the research is appropriately supported.
  5. Select two draftsthat you would like to review in the next unit. Each learner should have two peer reviewers. So, if you find a draft that already has two reviewers identified, select a different draft. Once the two drafts are chosen, respond to your peer’s initial post. In the title of your response post, type in your name and that you will be reviewing his or her draft. Remember, no more than two reviewers per draft.
  6. Once you have selected the drafts to review, download the projects and save them so that they are easily accessible in the next unit, where you will participate in the peer review feedback activity.
  7. Refer to the Guidelines for Effective Peer Review document for feedback guidelines specific to writers and responders. Also, refer to the Peer Review Feedback Form to learn how you will provide feedback to your peers.

Response Guidelines

The only required response is to document which drafts you will be reviewing, as stated above. Any other type of response is optional.

[u09d1] Unit 9 Discussion 1

HRM Effectiveness Improvement Plan Peer Review

The objectivity that comes from another point of view can add the clarity needed to complete your own work. In this discussion, your peers will look through your work and provide feedback so that the objectivity piece can be incorporated into your effectiveness improvement plan.

This discussion is three-fold:

  1. First, you are to provide feedback to your peer on his or her effectiveness improvement plan and its accompanying presentation.
  2. Next, you are to respond to your peer’s feedback on your project.
  3. Lastly, as the original reviewer, you are asked to respond to questions your peer sends back to you about your feedback.

The directions for each step are listed below. Also, remember that at this point, your work is in draft form. The purpose of this activity is to gather feedback that can help you revise and strengthen your project. This is an important element of the self-reflection process.

Before beginning your peer feedback, be sure that you have completed the following:

  1. Posted a draft of your effectiveness improvement plan and your PowerPoint presentation in Unit 8’s Peer Review Preparation discussion.
  2. From that discussion, downloaded copies of the effectiveness improvement plans you agreed to review.
  3. Read the Guidelines for Effective Peer Review and the Peer Review Feedback Form.

Once those steps are complete, provide feedback on the projects you agreed to review, following the Guidelines for Effective Peer Review and those listed below.

Providing Feedback to Your Peers

When giving feedback, you are looking to provide both constructive criticism and positive feedback on the parts that are done well. Address the following criteria using the Peer Review Feedback Form:

    • Identify the strengths of your peer’s work. Then, identify the area or areas that would benefit from expansion or clarification.
    • Evaluate the writer’s description of a specific topic related to HR professionals.
      • Evaluate how accurately the draft explains theoretical approaches found in the literature.
      • Evaluate how the draft analyzes key elements of the specific problem or topic, using literature to support each point.
      • Evaluate whether the effectiveness improvement plan uses HRM best practices and innovative strategies.
      • Evaluate how the suggested metrics and analytics fit within the organization and in regard to the topic.
      • Evaluate how accurately the plan explains the legal responsibilities in regard to the topic.
      • Evaluate how accurately the plan explains the ethical responsibilities in regard to the topic.
    • Evaluate your peer’s PowerPoint Presentation. Use the guidelines above and the Guidelines for Effective Peer Review as applicable.
    • Provide specific ways that your peer may be able to improve the pieces that you specifically commented on.
    • In addition to above, respond and comment on the items that your peer included in his or her original post.

As you respond to each of the items, be sure to provide specific examples of what works and does not work in the draft. Also, avoid focusing your comments on issues of grammar and copy editing, though if the work does needs improvement in these areas, you may certainly mention it and provide relevant feedback. However, the bulk of your feedback should focus on how the draft achieves the project objectives.

Note: In the subject line of your post, list the name of the peer for which you are providing feedback. This will help your peer to easily identify feedback that is meant for him or her.

Receiving Feedback from Your Peers

After reading through the feedback provided by your peers, be sure to:

    • Thank them for providing feedback.
    • Ask any follow-up questions you might have about his or her comments.
    • Let them know what feedback you feel will most help you improve your project.

Note that it is very important that you incorporate the feedback, as appropriate, within the final version of your project, which is due next week.

Responding to Questions Given to You

Respond to any follow-up questions your peers have about the feedback you gave them.
