“What about kids?” Susan asked. “Do you think kids are more susceptible?”

“I could ask at the after-school program where I’ve been temping,” Christy said. “It’s one of the special ed programs for teenagers.”

“Shouldn’t we try to find normal kids to talk to?” Mike asked. “If we talk to special ed kids, they don’t have the same intelligence, so we’d be introducing a new variable.”

“No,” Juan said. “We’ve seen it’s not about intelligence. And anyway, the kids in special ed have a wide range of intelligence.”

“Juan’s right,” Christy said. “Some of the teenagers I work with are off-the-charts smart. I’ll talk to them tomorrow.”

Juan appreciated the support, but he still didn’t see the answer. No matter how hard he tried to focus on the evidence, his gut kept telling him it was about smarts. He tried to mentally rip that thought out of his head and focus just on what they knew. As he tried, he had a glimmer of an idea. Juan just needed to get home and work it out.

The resources this week center on mental and physical disabilities. They face a wide range of stereotypes and prejudice. What stereotypes about different physical disabilities can you think of? What stereotypes and prejudices about mental health disabilities can you think of? Can you think of examples from current events or your personal life?

In addition, you’ll complete a paper looking at a controversial diversity topic—using arguments, counterarguments, and rebuttals to explore both sides. As you work on your paper, consider the issues presented on both sides of the controversy. Do disparities exist between diverse groups? LEARNER 1———When the effects of isolation for Covid-19 hit the healthcare field, many elderly patients found themselves in the position of being unable to continue to obtain their healthcare needs in the in-person manner they had previously participated engaged in. Self-imposed technology barriers based on their age were brought to the forefront and became an issue that had to be addressed to allow telehealth appointments.

Teaching an elderly patient who has convinced themselves they’re too old to use a computer or cell phone, let alone a smartphone, was a task I frequently found myself addressing. Smartphone use in place of computer use, how to use a computer or smartphone to participate in virtual healthcare appointments, how to find and log onto apps or websites and follow links provided in emails meant knowing how to check emails became a necessary skill.

I found over and over again, assuring the patient that their age was not a barrier to accessing virtual healthcare but only the lack of technological knowledge was standing in their way, and I was willing and able to teach them. This was a pointed example of self-imposed agism that is so commonly applied when it comes to learning newer technologies in the golden years of life. Teaching the most elderly and anti-technology patients how to access their virtual healthcare during a pandemic is a huge source of pride for me. Happy learnings, Mily Costello.

LEARNER 2—-Many of the elderly deal with ageism on a daily basis. Many people assume that because a person is a certain age that they can’t do certain things and that is simply not true. My granddad is in his mid 90’s and the only reason he can’t do certain things anymore is simply because his eye sight is not good. Eyesight can become bad at any age not just old age. He hates that people assume he needs help because he is old. He is very quick to say go help someone who needs it not me because I am old.
