Outline Instructions If we break down our assignment and think through the requirements in relation to paragraphs in our Analytic Explorations, our assignment details provide a structure that can serve as the basis for our outline:  Paragraph 1 Intro  Paragraphs 2-3 Context on the Conversation Paragraphs 4-5 Article 1 Summary Analysis  Paragraphs 6-7 Article 2 Summary Analysis  Paragraphs 8-9 Article 3 Summary Analysis  Paragraphs 10-11 Popular and Primary sources Paragraph 12 Conclusion and Synthesis In your introductory paragraph, you know you want to introduce your research topic and state your thesis. You also know that introductions and conclusions should generally avoid use of source material, so if you find good content you think would work to introduce your topic, save it for use as context in the next paragraph.   One paragraph might be enough room to provide background context, but you might need two paragraphs. The articles you read and annotated should have included a significant amount of general information on the overall topic, so for your context, select the information you think is relevant for readers and important to understand the content of your Analytic Exploration. Context can include definitions of key terms and explanations of key concepts related to your topic, important dates and events related to the history of the topic and the development of the conversation, or seminal works or names from the foundation of the topic or conversation. Assume that your Instructor, who is your main audience, knows little or nothing about the topic and needs a brief primer in order to understand the information you will provide throughout the rest of the paper.   The annotations you created should be refined so that only the relevant aspects needed to support synthesis remain. Do not keep the annotations in full as previously submitted. The length of the Analytic Exploration is intended to allow you to practice narrowing information and demonstrating concision. Keeping all the content from the annotation instead of identifying the pertinent elements will not leave room to focus on analysis and synthesis. Identifying those elements now and including them in the outline will prepare you to expand the outline into the Analytic Exploration.  The academic articles should be reviewed individually and each should be given similar treatment and similar space. Synthesis can occur within each individual section following the analysis of each article, or it can be included at the end of the three articles, but the goal is not only to synthesize the academic articles but to connect them to the popular conversation, as well. If, however, your thesis connects the academic articles and comments on them together as part of your overall thesis, you can synthesize them in the paper, too.  The summary, analysis, and synthesis of the two popular sources may need one paragraph, but it may deserve two. You might have selected long and comprehensive popular sources that rival the depth and development of the academic source, and if so, provide them with the space needed to do them justice. Or you might have selected short popular sources that don’t need more than one paragraph together. Finally, include a description of your data set and integrate the findings into the larger conversation. Perhaps you can include an image that visualizes the data from an important finding in your survey results. Before you move to the conclusion, make sure that you have enough synthesis in the paper. Your thesis should be a synthesis of the theses, so that is the vital element to include, but explaining the connections throughout the paper is a strong way to add depth and to advance beyond summary. Strong synthesis also allows you to be creative and demonstrate mastery of the advanced intellectual skills. A sentence or so throughout the paper or a strong recapping in the conclusion might be enough synthesis, but if you need a paragraph before the conclusion to allow your sources to interact, take the space to allow the synthesis to develop. The conclusion should restate the thesis, but there is no specific assignment for a call to action or a forward-looking statement. Nevertheless, it is always nice to try to end on a note that continues to advance your work, so think of how you can use your conclusion. Information that needs to be included in the Outline: ****in this assignment, one more primary source is needed to be found and used in this outline as well as formatted in APA style at the end along with the other articles listed.
