The topic I chose for the Topic 3 Executive Summary assignment is quality improvement for fall prevention in the elderly patients. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative is to implement additional to new interventions to reduce fall rate in Psyche geriatric unit, including using hour rounding and placing mobility card in front of patient’s room. The targeted population would be elderly patients’ population in the psyche unit at my current employer. Most of the patients in this unit are geriatric population over 65 years admitted with diagnosis of manic-depressive disorders; schizophrenia, dementia and Alzheimer etc. The benefits of improving this fall prevention program will not only prevent the falls for patients but it will also save expenses to the hospital for treating patients for the injuries such as fractures, abrasions or other injuries as a result of fall. Some of these injuries could extend patients’ stay in the hospital and require further staffing. Effective communication between health care team is necessary in fall prevention. Nurse should collaborate with physical therapist, occupational therapist, and pharmacist to implement this project successfully. The hospital increases expenses and uses additional resources for patients who have injured as a result of falls. It is believed that the budget for this implementation is cost-effective, and hospital will save money significantly if fall reduces. The basis on which QI initiative will be evaluated include the fall prevention QI initiative evaluated by leader and management team using control chart, keep in track of falls and control process of quality improvement. Staff conduct the survey on patient’s satisfaction and keep in track of the fall rates after three months of implementation. This will help prevent any further fall incidences.
