Taya What I thought was very interesting was Haxby et al.’s model of face perception. Before this model, the most followed model of facial recognition was the cognitive account by Bruce and Young, which showed that there is a difference in the processing of familiar and unfamiliar faces. Haxby’s model was neuroanatomical, showing that the core regions in the brain most involved in facial perception were the inferior occipital gyri, the superior temporal sulcus, and the lateral fusiform gyrus (or the fusiform face area/FFA). This model divided the layers of face processing into core mechanisms, like the perception of facial features, unique identity, and changeable aspects of the face. Recognizing faces is something very intriguing to me, especially because facial recognition is unique and separate from object recognition.
