Chapter 8 Explain the Five Pillars of Islam and why they are important to Muslims. (1 page) The Five Pillars of Islam are the foundation of the Islamic faith. These pillars derived from the Hadith which where founded by Muhammad to be traditions to help for Islamic way of life and proper way to recognize God. The five pillars are shahada, salat, zakat, sawm, and hajj. Shahad is witness, which is declaring faith and submission to God. Salat refers to prayer. The Muslim people pray five times per day, at dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and evening towards Mecca. Zakat is almsgiving, where the people will give to the Islamic community to help with upkeep. The amount given is dependent on the wealth of the in individual, it is expected that one who is more wealthy gives more than one who has less wealth. Fasting during Ramadan is sawm. During this fasting one would not eat from dawn until dusk in the nineth month of the Islamic calendar. This reminds the people practicing this faith to stay humble by putting through a day of hunger. Hajj means travel or pilgrimage. It is expected that anyone practicing the Islamic faith to be able to make a journey to Mecca before they die. Compare and contrast the Umayyads to the Abbasids. (1 page) The Umyyads were refered to as a clan where muhammand’s message challenged their leadership in society. This challenge stemmed from the wealth they obtained from caravan trading while they left the poor people poor and hungry. Not only did they gain wealth from trade, they also taxed the Islamic people who were completing their hajj to Mecca, which upset the Muslim people. These people were also polytheistic which went against the message of Muhammad. Umayyads believed in many gods as well as spirits of nature.
