Part 2:  INTEGRATE QUOTES INTO YOUR WRITING

Directions:  Read the following information about how to effectively integrate quotes into your writing.  Then complete the exercise practices.

Method #1:  Integrate the sample quote with a SIGNAL WORD and a COMMA.

Method #2: MAKE THE QUOTE PART OF THE SENTENCE

Method #3:  PARAPHRASE

The statement must be in your own words.

If you use any phrases that are in the original quote, place them in quotation marks.

Add a citation—even if a paraphrase is in your own words, it is still someone else’s idea.

example:

Student’s sentence: After June’s horrible piano recital, her sister Ann belittles her.

Quote: “You aren’t a genius like me” (Tan 151)

Method #1: After June’s horrible piano recital, her sister Ann belittles her.  She insists, “You aren’t a genius like me” (Tan 151).

Method #2:

After June’s horrible piano recital, her sister Ann belittles her. She accuses her of not being a “genius” like she is (Tan 151).

Method #3:  After June’s horrible piano recital, her sister Ann belittles her. She makes June feel like she is worthless and not as smart as she is (Tan 151).
