English 105 Assignment: Rhetorical Analysis Due: Feb 15th, end of day Length: 1000 words Value: 10% In this assignment you will rhetorically analyze Steven Pinker’s essay “Why They Kill Their Newborns,” which you will find at: http://www.rightgrrl.com/carolyn/pinker.html You are urged to refer to the Rhetorical Analysis lecture video and slide when writing your analysis. Remember that while you may certainly note strengths – indeed, you may generally agree with the author – your focus will be on identifying and discussing the weaknesses in the essay. You should discuss only the most serious weaknesses in the essay as the word count for this assignment prohibits discussing all of them in detail. In other words, don’t bother trying to identify all of the problems with Pinker’s argument, only the important ones. Finally, do not refer to any secondary sources. The ideas in your analysis should be entirely your own. If I see evidence that you’ve consulted any secondary sources for this assignment, it will be considered plagiarism. This is a collaborative assignment. Find your group in the list below and contact your fellow group members as soon as possible to set-up a schedule for completing this project. This will obviously be done online, and you can choose whatever digital platform you wish. Though each of you will receive the same grade for this assignment (and it is expected that each of you will contribute equally, though you may wish to assign different members different tasks), your participation as a member of this group will be evaluated by your fellow group members. Your mark for participation will then be included in the Participation grade for this course (it will be worth 25% of the course Participation grade). Each member of the group will send me an email ([email protected]) with a participation mark out of 5 for each of the other members of your group. You will not evaluate your own participation. The Subject line of this email should be your group number. Note that sending me this email is mandatory; you will not receive a participation mark for this assignment until you’ve sent it to me. This email – like the Rhetorical Analysis – is due February 17th and is completely anonymous. This assignment doesn’t require a separate title page. It should be typed, double-spaced and feature 12 Point font. Make sure the course title, your name, the date, and my name are listed in the upper left-hand corner of your analysis. Please submit only one Rhetorical Analysis per group. It doesn’t matter which group member submits it. You will need to cite Pinker’s essay in an MLA style Works Cited entry that will appear at the end of your paper. For instruction on how to compose a Works Cited entry, you can refer to your textbook or google “Purdue Online Writing Lab” and then select “MLA Formatting and Style” and then select “MLA Works Cited: Electronic Sources” from the menu on the left.
