Nike Company Stock Price

Introduction

Nike Company is a multinational organization that designs, develops, manufactures, and sells footwear, apparel, equipment, and accessories mostly related to sports activities. The company operates through numerous segments, including Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and Latin America, Greater China and Global Brand Divisions, Converse, and Corporate. Formerly known as Blue Ribbon Sports, Nike Company was founded by Bill Bowerman in 1964 and was branded the name Nike shoe in 1972, then went public in the two years that followed. The entity has seen consistent expansion since the 1980s in its business. It has steadily diversified its product line through several acquisitions like the shoe entities Converse, Inc., Canstar Sports, Inc., and Cole Haan (Bonetti, 2020). It directly sells its products to consumers through its platforms, including digital and retail platforms. The company also involves retailers and independent distributors in its sales strategy.

Part of the entity’s success story has been attributed to endorsements by athletes such as Roger Federer, Mia Hamm, Tiger Woods, and Michael Jordan. Currently, the company employs over 79100 individuals, and based on the latest report, its current net worth is valued at $166.2 billion. The entity’s value is often reflected by its market capitalization or the multiplication of its current stock price and the shares’ outstanding number. The company’s success and potential growth can be witnessed by its sales and revenues, where since 2011, it has been generating revenues amounting to more than $23.7 billion. Based on the 2022 financial year, it recorded revenues amounting to $46.9 billion, reflecting a significant increase of $38.5 billion from the previous year (Yahoo Finance, 2023). Besides, it is currently the most valuable apparel brand globally, being on top of its major competitors, including Adidas, Puma, Gucci, and Under Armour. The company operates in more than forty-six countries and over seven hundred stores within those nations.

Graphical Representations of Data

Interpreting the Highest Stock Price

The above graph represents Nike’s highest stock price from December 2019 to February 2021. It illustrates how two variables, the highest stock prices and time, have been related to each over the period. The values in the x-axis represent the company’s highest stock prices, while the values in the y-axis represent time in days. From the end of 2019 to March 2020, the company’s stock prices showed a consistent decline. However, it rapidly inclined to over $140 in April 2021. The scatterplot illustrated a steady rising motion from March 2020 to April 2021. This indicated that the company’s top brass was steering operations toward profitability. The highest price was indicated in the January 2021.

Scatterplot of the Lowest Stock Price

The above graph also represents the lowest stock price of Nike Company from December 2019 to February 2021. Unlike the first graph, it shows the relationship between the lowest stock prices of the company against time. Similarly, the values on the x-axis represent the company’s highest stock prices, while the values on the y-axis represent time in days. Also, the scatterplot illustrates a steady decline from December 2019 to March 2020 (Yahoo Finance, 2023). However, the scatterplot rises from there to February 2021 consistently and steadily. In essence, low-priced stocks tend to come along with a lower profit-to-equity ratio. This means that the company’s investors had to pay less during the decline period when purchasing Nike’s stocks. From the point where the graph escalates, the investors have to pay more to purchase the company’s stock.

Histogram of the Adjusted Daily Closing Stock Price

The histogram above represents the Nike’s adjusted closing stock prices within equally distribution of concurrent data ranges. It shows the relationship between two variables, adjusted closing stock prices and ranges of adjusted closing stock prices. The values in the x-axis represents ranges of adjusted closing stock prices while y-axis’s values represent the number of occurrence. Based on the graph’s patter, the histogram is positively skewed with the median being lower than the mean. This is shown by the way the graph is skewed to the right side indicating more data points falling within the lowest ranges of daily adjusted closing stock prices. The graph therefore illustrates the non-volatility of Nike’s adjusted stock prices.

Histogram of the Stock Trading Volume

The above histogram represents the stock trading volume of Nike Company. It shows the relationship between its stock volume and the number of occurrences, also termed frequencies. On the x-axis are the values representing the company’s stock trading volume, while on the y-axis are the frequency or number of occurrences. Likewise, the histogram is positively skewed, with its mean value being more significant than the median. This is illustrated in the graph, whereby most values fall within the lower stock volume range. The graph skewed to the right, meaning the company’s daily stock volume is unevenly distributed, making it difficult for investors to speculate.

Descriptive Statistics

Mean, Median, and Standard Deviation of Adjusted Closing Stock Prices

The company’s mean in the adjusted closing stock prices was recorded at $105.6364523. This indicated that Nike’s market was stable as its sales and revenues steadily grew over the financial year. On the other hand, the company’s median in its adjusted closing stock prices was recorded at $100.656334 over the year. Compared to its mean, the company’s mean was lesser than its median value of the price, signifying the presence of outliers on the upper side of the entity’s stock prices (Freixo, 2023). This indicated that the company’s stock prices could be at risk of fluctuations. The company’s standard deviation in its adjusted closing stock prices was recorded at $18.54219923. Based on the presented values of the company’s adjusted stock prices mean, and standard deviation, the volatility of the company’s stock pricing was 19.58.

Mean, Median, and Standard Deviation of the Company’s Daily Traded Stock Volume

Nike Company recorded the mean of its daily traded stock volume at 7399826.98. The value meant that the company had low liquidity in its stocks. The company’s stock was considered a lower volume stock as it was trading fewer shares per day. On the other hand, the company’s median in its stock volume was recorded at 6158300. This was lesser than the value obtained in its mean. Likewise, the values represented the presence of outliers on the higher side of the data set, signifying a sharp increase in the company’s daily traded stock volume. The analysis showed that Nike’s daily stock volume had a mean of 7399826.98, while its standard deviation was 4395824.94. This was considered to be a relatively high value of standard deviation.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the graphical representation gives clear insights into the company’s financial health to its stakeholders. Following the company’s high stock price, the company has been steering its operations toward profitability due to its steadily rising share price. The company’s highest stock price is tilting towards success, meaning its stakeholders are pleased with the rising share price. The management is, therefore, more likely to retain the company’s position in its industry. Price to earnings to growth ratio is an addition to the price-to-earnings ratio. This ratio provides a better yardstick to measure the company’s performance and thereby predict the stock prices (Javani, Bonabi & Ashena, 2023). For instance, the Company’s stock was considered a lower volume stock as it traded fewer daily shares. On the other hand, the company’s median in its stock volume was recorded at 6158300. This was lesser than the value obtained in its mean. A company with a steadily rising share price is an ideal organization for investors to put their money in as this signifies that the company’s operations have the potential to bear more profits or good returns for them. On the other hand, low-priced stocks tend to go along with a lower profit-to-equity ratio. The lower the stock price, the easier it is for investors to purchase its shares. Therefore, a company should ensure lower stock prices to attract more investors.

On the other hand, volume tends to measure the number of shares traded in stock in the future. Volume can indicate market strength, as rising markets on increasing volume are typically viewed as strong and healthy. Besides, there is no specific dividing line between the two. However, high-volume stocks typically trade at a volume of 500,000 or more daily shares. Low-volume stocks would be below that mark.

The vision of Nike is based on creating innovative thinking in product manufacturing and enhancing its athlete’s abilities. In other words, the company aims to manufacture innovative products that put its brand ahead of advanced technology and innovation strategies. Nike’s products are often targeted toward athletes and sports events.

Sales

Nike has experienced consistent fluctuations in sales and revenue over the past few years. Following the most recent annual report, the company collected more sales and revenues in the first and fourth quarters than in the second and third quarters. The company’s sales and revenues were often made from its numerous products related to sports and also non-sporty items. It has attained flexibility associated with demographic changes, trends, preferences and styles. Based on recent past years, the company recorded a total revenue of $39.12 billion, $44.53 billion and 46.71 billion in 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively. Following the revenue trend over the recent past periods, the company has consistently improved sales. It faced a significant decline in 2020 due to the impact of covid-19.

Having operated more than 122 footwear entities across 12 countries, Nike is surrounded by stiff competition pressure from rival companies like Adidas, Reebok, Converse, Fila and Puma. Nevertheless, the company has taken significant steps to remain on top of its main competitors. One of the approaches used by the company has been cost management. The company’s manufacturing operations and activities are often conducted outside the United States. This is a competitive advantage for the entity as it operates in countries where production costs are low. Lowering production costs helps the company widen its profitability margin, maximizing its profits. Other competitive advantages that hold the company at the top position include its famous and well-established brand, strong social media followers and international popularity.

The first and second graphs were based on the lowest and highest stock prices of Nike Company. This showed that the company’s stock volume was decreasing during the year. Moreover, the company’s adjusted daily stock scored a mean of 105.64, while its standard deviation was 18.54. Further, the analysis showed that Nike’s daily stock volume had a mean of 7399826.98, while its standard deviation was 4395824.94. This was considered to be a relatively high value of standard deviation.
