Discussion: Junk Bonds   Previous Next  If you have poor credit due to being delinquent on credit card debt or other issues, chances are the bank is going to charge you a higher interest rate on a personal loan, or it might not give you a loan at all. Corporations face the same problems. If a company takes on too much debt or is otherwise considered to be a credit risk, then it also gets low credit ratings. In this case, if it wants to take on more debt it needs to issue what is known as “junk bonds,” or as corporations prefer to call them, “high-yield bonds.” Whatever you call these types of bonds, their key feature is that they pay higher interest than bonds from a corporation that has a high credit rating. If you have a 401(k) or other retirement investment fund, chances are you have the option to make a portion of your investment in these higher risk/higher return bonds. Do some research on junk bonds. What kind of controversies do you see with them? Do you think they are a solid investment for your retirement, perhaps no riskier than most investments? Or do they deserve the derogatory term “junk”? Share the links to the articles you find with your classmates, and discuss your opinions as to whether you think the higher interest rate justifies the increased risk.

Discussion: The Role of Marketing Public Relations (MPR)   Previous Next  Disinformation for Hire Information has changed drastically in the last few years. Everyone with a podcast, blog, or social media page has become an authority or expert and has an opinion that they will freely share with anyone who will listen. Businesses large and small are affected by disinformation; the effect can be negative or positive. Module 3 Discussion Week 1 Resources Where Does Public Relations Fit in Your Marketing Plan? (2021)Marketing Public Relations MPR Functions (2021)Disinformation For Hire: How A New Breed of PR Firms Is Selling Lies Online (2020)Amazon asked Apple to remove an app that spots fake reviews, and Apple agreed (2021)Why it’s so hard to get rid of fake online reviews (2021) Week 1 Discussion Post Based on the resources provided or your research, use Marketing Public Relations (MPR) on the company website. Create a page that describes what your company offers the community (50-75 words of text on the page). In your post, provide rationale for what is written based on the company. (Research Support Required) Include the website link in your post. This post should be 2 paragraphs in length (150-200 words). Since you are engaging in research, be sure to cite in the body of the post and add a reference list in APA format. NOTE: failure to use research with accompanying in-text citations to support content will result in reduced scoring “Level 2-Developing” on the grading rubric. WEEK 1 INTERACTIVE RESPONSES TO CLASSMATES Reply to different classmates throughout class; the variety is beneficial to both parties. Let’s see if every student who posts during the week receives at least one critique. 1st Interactive Response: Critique one business’ MPR from a consumer point of view. Is the message compelling? Does it fit with the company’s online presence? 2nd Interactive Response: Critique another business’ MPR from a consumer point of view. Is the message compelling? Does it fit with the company’s online presence? Each reply should be one paragraph in length (or about 75 words) and must be substantive. Do not simply say “I agree” or “That is great”; specify why and be detailed in your explanation. You may use research in your responses, but it is not required. MPR: Turning Negatives into Positives Internet trolls and annoyed Yelpers can hurt your business’ online presence. Hashtag Activism is a powerful movement that has moved social justice topics to the forefront of searches and feeds. Small businesses do not have armies of users or large budgets to combat negative information. Module 3 Discussion Week 2 Resources How to Effectively Respond to Positive and Negative Yelp Reviews (2021)How to Turn Negative Publicity into a PR Opportunity (2021)Here’s how to know if you’re an internet troll (2021)How to Reduce Facebook Page Trolling (2021)Instagram Trolls: How to Prevent Spam on Instagram (2021) Based on the resources provided or your research, share what you can do if your company receives negative coverage online. WEEK 2 INTERACTIVE RESPONSES TO CLASSMATES Reply to different classmates throughout class; the variety is beneficial to both parties. Let’s see if every student who posts during the week receives at least one critique. 1st Interactive Response: Critique one classmate’s plan to drown out the negative. 2nd Interactive Response: Critique another classmate’s plan to drown out the negative. Each reply should be one paragraph in length (or about 75 words) and must be substantive. Do not simply say “I agree” or “That is great”; specify why and be detailed in your explanation. You may use research in your responses, but it is not required. In your own words, respond to the discussion and comments of classmates. Grades will be based on effectual, concise, and interactive feedback. The excessive use of quotes will directly impact performance since this indicates a lack of comprehension and shows that you may not have mastered the concepts.
