Week 5

  • Reinforcement Procedures

Your client flops on the floor, screaming, crying, and kicking. Hearing the noise, the client’s mother enters the room and indicates that this behavior is typical of the client. As you run your assessment, you observe that the client usually gets Mom’s attention when they engage in these behaviors. As you design your intervention, you want to ensure your client has a way to get their mom’s attention while minimizing attention to the problem behavior. You decide to implement a FCT teaching procedure for the request for the mother’s attention, and then use a DRA procedure to reinforce this request and put the challenging behavior on extinction. Have you ever used a DRA-FCT procedure?

Reinforcement-based procedures are powerful tools for increasing desirable behaviors. This week you will be introduced to some commonly used differential reinforcement procedures, in which one provides additional reinforcement for a desired behavior. The procedures discussed this week will include differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (DRA) and differential reinforcement of incompatible behaviors (DRI).

This week we will also cover functional communication training (FCT), a vital reinforcement-based tool in ABA that can be used to teach replacement behaviors for problem behaviors. Finally, you will be introduced to the high-probability instructional sequence, sometimes also known as behavioral-momentum, which has been proven to help increase compliance.

  • Quiz Overview

This quiz will assess your understanding of the topics covered in the weekly readings.

  • What You Need to Know

    Reinforcement Procedures, Part 1

In this week’s readings, we will be examining the concept of differential reinforcement. We will examine the DRA (Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior) schedule in particular, and how antecedent-based strategies such as functional communication training can complement the DRA schedule to facilitate effective teaching conditions.

    Instructional Activities

This week you will participate in ICS, take a quiz, and complete formative multimedia activities. The BCBA/BCaBA Task List (5th ed.) elements that will be covered during these activities include:

    • G-12: Use equivalence-based instruction.
    • G-13: Use the high-probability instructional sequence.
    • G-14: Use reinforcement procedures to weaken behavior (for example, DRA, FCT, DRO, DRL, and NCR).

    Capella Compassion Code

You may be directed to reflect on a section of the Capella Compassion Code in your ICS this week. Please remember to add any notes you find useful as you dive further into this code.

  • Interactive Learning Module: Locating Common Themes in a Literature Review

In this activity, you will learn more about compiling and writing a literature review to help you prepare for your literature review assignment due this week.

Note: Although you will not receive a grade for this activity, you must complete it to pass the course.

Follow the practices in the ABA Media Best Practices [DOCX] guide to have the best possible experience with the media and to make sure you get credit for this activity.

  • Interactive Learning Module: ABA Terminology Flashcards – Week 5

Each week, you are provided with resources to help you study and practice behavior analysis terminology. Mastering the terminology during your program will give you a solid foundation to develop examples of these terms and ultimately for practical application in the field.

This media will help you master your knowledge of the terms used this week.

Note: This media piece is included in your required instructional activities. Although you will not receive a grade for this activity, you must complete it to pass the course. You must answer each question correctly to receive credit for completing this activity.

Follow the practices in the ABA Media Best Practices [DOCX] guide to have the best possible experience with the media and to make sure you get credit for this activity.

    LITERATURE REVIEW

    Overview

The treatment plans you develop as a behavior analyst must be evidence based. This assignment will give you the chance to explore and uncover a wide range of research-based interventions that will help you build your treatment plan. What types of behavior analytic interventions have been effective in addressing the challenging behavior? What are the theoretical underpinnings, basic concepts, and principles involved in these interventions? A firm grasp of fundamental concepts is needed to thoroughly understand the behavioral research that enables analysis of ABA case studies and real-life scenarios. Please refer to What Is the Literature Review? on Campus for a refresher on how to be a skilled researcher.

    Instructions

Your assignment comprises two parts. Use the following subheadings, formatted in current APA style, to organize your assignment:

    Introduction

In one paragraph, provide an overview of your plan for researching strategies for your individual case. At a minimum, it must restate the following from the Week 2 assignment:

    1. Behavioral challenge, function of the behavior challenge, and outcome criteria identified.
    2. Social significance of the target behavior and outcome criteria in your case study.
    Research-Based Interventions

This section (7–8 pages) will consist of your evaluation of the literature you compiled. In this evaluation, you will identify, describe, and synthesize studies within categories of strategies as described below.

    Antecedent-Based Strategies

    1. Identify and describe three behavior analytic studies to support your antecedent-based strategies. At least one study will directly support the intervention you are using.
    2. Synthesize the three studies.
      • Identify common, relevant ABA concepts, principles, and methods used in the studies and explain how they can be used to modify the behavior identified in your case study.
      • Explain whether the interventions in the studies can be considered compassionate and least intrusive.
      • Make sure to also address the external and internal validity of these studies. For example, did the intervention show a socially significant impact on the behavior? Did the study demonstrate generalization of the behavior change?
      • Compare the similarities and differences between the interventions in the studies.

    Consequence-Based Strategies

    1. Identify and describe three behavior analytic studies to support your consequence-based strategies.

    Replacement-Based Strategies

    1. Identify and describe three behavior analytic studies to support your replacement-based strategies.
    Conclusion

In 1–2 paragraphs, provide a general summation of the interventions identified in your paper. Identify which antecedent-based, consequence-based, and replacement-based interventions you intend to use in your Intervention Support Plan. Explain how they are supported by the research you found. In addition, explain why it is important to use research-based interventions when creating a treatment plan.

  • Write Your Discussion Post

    Article Exploration: Part 2

For your Week 5 assignment, you will be expected to gather nine scholarly articles to develop your literature review. The articles you choose should include replacement-based strategies to reduce the target problem behavior.

For this discussion, complete the following:

    • Find three articles that support your topic in regard to replacement strategies and how they will be reinforced.
    • Post the three APA-formatted citations in the discussion post.
    • Provide a synopsis of one of the chosen articles.
    • Identify common concepts and principles used in the three studies you chose.

    Response Guidelines

Read the posts of your peers and respond to one. Your responses should be substantive and demonstrate your understanding of the material. Which aspects of the post do you like or agree with? Are there areas that are unclear? Did the post spark questions that you would like to ask your peer? Remember to keep your tone scholarly, respectful, and professional.
