SCC Single Use Plastics Presentation

Ecologists think about all of the connections between biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem. Included in those factors are humans and the changes we continue to impose on the landscape. When considering how humans impact the environment, one must reasoning about that impact at a variety of levels. Many times, humans do not fully consider the extent of the impact of a behavior. Through this presentation, you will show your ability to include humans in your reasoning of ecological systems.

Your presentation should include the following criteria:

Introduce your human impact. 

What human behavior are you exploring?

1. How does it work?

Why do humans use it?

Is there an alternative available for this behavior?

Describe how it impacts the biosphere, ecosystem, population, and individual level. (10 points)

Biosphere – the global scale

• Ecosystem – biotic and abiotic factors in an area
• Population – impact on a single species at the population level (think about population dynamics like size and density)
• Individual – impact on a single species at the individual level (think more about physiology and behavior)
• Come up with a potential research question for studying the impact of the human behavior on each level. (10 points)
  You can use your textbook to find examples of research questions in each of these areas, but please come up with your own research questions.
  Here are some examples…

Biosphere – what trends are there in urbanization at the global level? how is that impacting global diversity?

1. Ecosystem – How does urbanization impact water quality, soil, and available nutrients in an ecosystem? How are organisms impacted by these changes in abiotic factors?

Population – What is the population density of fox squirrels in urban versus rural areas?

Individual – How does anti-predator response of individual fox squirrels change in urban versus rural areas?

Narrate your presentation and record your screen using Panopto or Screencastify. (20 points)

Please check to make sure your Panopto works ahead of the deadline! It should be better this time. I think I figured everything out, but let me know if not ASAP. I don’t quite trust it yet. 🙂

• The presentation should be at least 5 minutes.
• The presentation should have images when appropriate (at least one per slide is a good idea).
• The presentation should be limited in word count. This means that is better to narrate or use pictures to describe points that are outlined in more concise language on the powerpoint slides. This is good practice for presentations in general.
• The presentation should be explained in a way that a general audience can understand. This means you should define any biological terms and explain the concept in a way that makes sense to the average person.

The presenter should speak clearly throughout.
