Advanced healthcare Discuss how you can apply the concepts learned in this course to your current or future career. How might the lessons you have learned positively impact your career success? Business Law The creation of a corporation is usually more formal and technical than the creation of other forms of business organizations, and the operation of a corporation is usually more complex and regulated than other forms of business organizations. Are all of the formalities, technicalities, and regulations worth the benefits that a corporation can provide? Does it depend on the circumstances or the kind of business involved? If the usefulness of a corporation depends on circumstances or the kind of business involved, what circumstances would justify using a corporation to operate a business? What kind of business would justify a corporation? What is the difference between a de jure corporation and a de facto corporation, and what is necessary to form each? One of the negative aspects of the corporate form of doing business is double taxation, which occurs when a corporation pays dividends to shareholders from profits that have already been taxed and the dividends, when received by shareholders, are taxed again. How does the use of a subchapter S corporation address the issue of double taxation? Information System Management Identify a skill or knowledge that you learned in this course, and explain how you can apply it to increase success in your career in a real-world scenario. Critical Issues in Health care What role does long-term care services play in the U.S. healthcare delivery system? How do you think the Baby Boomer generation will affect long-term care in the future? Do you think hospital ethics committees are necessary? Why, or why not? Ethics Because morphine lowers breathing, heart rate and blood pressure to dangerously low levels, it is an open question whether palliative care hastens death. Some critics argue that if both practices result in death, there is little difference between palliative care and active euthanasia. Active euthanasia is when a substance is administered or a direct action is taken that results in death. Keeping in mind hospice is not always for terminal patients or those towards the end of life and that hospice care is a type of palliative care, what is palliative care? Why do some critics claim there are similarities? The environment is not sentient or conscious, at least not in any traditional sense. Are humans the only ones worthy of moral standing? Have you ever stopped to truly consider what it means to be ethically obligated to something which is not wholly alive? How do you feel about that? Explain your answer and how reflecting on moral standing specifically relates to determining our obligation to the environment. General Psychology Marijuana has now been legalized in numerous states. Some people believe this has resulted in an increase of impaired drivers on the road and that traffic fatalities have increased as a result. While some drug tests taken at the scene of accidents do indicate the presence of marijuana, such tests only reveal that the drug has been used—they do not indicate actual intoxication, as indicators of marijuana use can stay in the system for days or even weeks after actual use. What are some likely ethical issues arising from such testing? How do you think a status of “impaired” can be legally established to enforce safety if exact intoxication is not measured by current tests? Do you think that watching violence on television increases violence and aggression in viewers? Why, or why not? Explain your definition of learning, and describe one learning experience you have had using observation. English So far in our course, we have discussed academic writing in depth, and with this unit, you are embarking upon your first major writing assignment for the course. I want to encourage everyone to choose an essay topic that is relevant for you, your career, or your chosen major. Though the unit study guide will provide some general topics for comparison (cash vs. credit, urban living vs. rural living), I’d be more interested to hear about a comparison that is more relevant to the work you’re doing. For instance, if I were to write a comparison essay based a relevant issue in my profession, I might consider the differences between teaching online and teaching in person. I might also compare teaching Composition courses to teaching Literature courses. It’s fine if you choose one of the more general topics, but I also encourage you to push yourself. How do you feel about your progress? Do you feel that you are getting more comfortable with the skills of academic writing? To that end, how do you feel about your essay? Is there anything that you would like to share with your course mates? Of course, not all comparative exercises are successful. Do you feel that yours was? Did you learn something, or do you feel that you may have even taught the reader something? Reflect upon your experience so far in the course. Unit IV has focused on ways that you can become a better student through understanding the assignment; communicating your needs to your support network; writing a professional email; and reading, processing, and responding to feedback. Economic for managers Identify a good you commonly use or would like to use. Explain at least three factors that would result in a shift in the demand curve for that good and three factors that would result in a shift in the supply curve for that good. Describe the effect on equilibrium price and quantity of each factor. Finally, explain how the shifts in demand and supply are different from movements along the demand curve or movements along the supply curve and why the distinction is important. Incorporate the concepts of game theory with international trade and tariffs. Set up two payoff matrices. Set up the first payoff matrix such that the outcome will be harmful to both countries. Set up the second payoff matrix such that the outcome will be beneficial to the United States. Evaluate the two matrices using current actions by each country to see which matrix is most likely correct. Discuss with your classmates whether or not the ensuing trade war will produce successful outcomes. College Algebra You may have found that mathematics takes more time and practice when compared to other subjects you have studied. For this discussion board question, research some time management skills and share your findings with the class. Are there any time management techniques that you use or are going to use to help you effectively learn the material and complete your assignments on time? If so, what are they? Workers Compensation Under the guidance of workers’ compensation law, the basic rule is that if you are temporarily disabled on workers’ compensation, the employer may not discriminate against you by termination or layoff. One exception to the rule might be if it is clear through medical evidence that you will be unable to return to your usual occupation. Another exception is if your employer needs to replace your position because of business necessity, though the burden on the employer is very high; they may instead hire a temporary employee rather than replace you. What are your thoughts around this basic guidance? Should a worker lose his/her job if they are out of work and on workers’ compensation? Is it ethical to terminate an employee based on the two exceptions mentioned above? Should the employer be able to make the best business decision and replace the worker? Why, or why not?  General contractors may have multiple job sites and multiple projects. Subcontractors may split their workforce several different ways to work for several different general contractors. With foremen and supervisors traveling between construction sites, we enter the realm of workers’ compensation known as the coming and going rule. The coming and going rule generally states that when an employee is traveling to work or lunch or traveling home from work and they are injured in a motor vehicle accident, they are not covered by workers’ compensation.Do you think that the coming and going rule is fair in today’s world of multitasking where an employee can pull over on the side of the road and still be hit by a distracted driver? What if the employee is not driving but merely sitting on the side of the road in his or her vehicle reading and responding to emails? In a world of iPhones, Android phones, and Blackberry phones, can the employer still benefit from a traveling worker? If the employer is benefiting from the worker stopped in his or her car on the side of the road, should the accident be covered under workers’ compensation?
