Gilmartin’s reading stresses the need for law enforcement officers to possess a survival mindset. In our reading he asks the question, “Are officers really surviving?” Gilmartin states, “Although in many ways officers are winning the battle of street survival, they appear to be fatally losing the battle of emotional survival.” (p. 9). Having a survival mindset is key in the law enforcement profession.

Identify the physiological, psychological, physical, and emotional effects of stress in law enforcement. How are each of these areas affected when an officer is involved in a high risk or traumatic incident?

Do you agree with Gilmartin’s view on “the battle of emotional survival?” Explain your thoughts in detail.

What characteristics do you feel are necessary for having a survival mindset in law enforcement?

It’s Not a Feeling

As our learning and reading suggests, PTSD is on ongoing threat to professionals working within the field of law enforcement. PTSD is not a feeling or a decision, it a real diagnosable mental health disorder. Fortunately, the number of resources is growing and advancements in the mental health field continue to increase treatment options. The level of support an officer receives after an incident plays an important role in how an officer will react to trauma. Knowledge and understanding are the two best weapons that can be used to combat PTSD.

In a two-page essay discuss the following:

Briefly describe and explain PTSD and acute stress disorder.

What are the primary symptoms a law enforcement officer may display if suffering from PTSD and/or acute stress disorder?

What treatment options are available for someone suffering with PTSD?

Does having a survival mindset and building resilience decrease your chances of developing PTSD after a traumatic incident? Explain your response.

What can law enforcement professionals do to minimize their risks of developing PTSD?
