Western Nevada College Review Movie Gender-Expansive Communication Essay

Students will consider how films depict gendered communication and gender norms.

Students will describe examples of typical and gender-expansive communication and self-presentation in the film.

A rating of 5 stick figures is highly stereotypical. A rating of 1 stick figure is non-stereotypical. Explain your rating in at least one paragraph. Points:

• Instructions:Step 1Watch the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians. As you watch, pay special attention to gender identities, gender expression, male/female dynamics, and gendered communication. Consider how the film presents gender along three dimensions: identity, roles, and communication behaviors.Step 2Write an analysis of gendered aspects of the film. The essay should include the following:After viewing the film, write a 1-4-page, 500-900-word review to include the following components. Your response should be in the form of a well-written essay. Use complete sentences and appropriate grammar and syntax. You may write in the first-person. It is not necessary to recount the entire plot; however, you should use relevant details and examples from the film to support and illustrate your answers to the following prompts.

Execution: Describe your own response to the film. Did you like it? Was it well-acted? Well-written? Did you find humor in the comedy? As a film, how would you characterize and rate this film? What is your opinion of the way gender is portrayed in the film? This should be a brief introduction and should comprise no more than 25% of your paper.

Describe your impressions of the film’s use of typical and atypical gendered expression, presentation and communication. How stereotypical (in the gender context) did you find the film? Use the Stick Figure System above to score the film. What factors did you consider as you determined its gender stereotype rating?

Select 2 characters and describe their gender identities and gender roles. How do you believe they might identify? How do their communication choices and behavior reflect gender identity? Do they represent traditional, stereotypical, or gender expansive norms? How do they reflect gender roles?

Choose two theories or complex concepts from COM 407 and apply them to the norms, behaviors, or events depicted in the film.

Apply the concept of Intersectionality to at least one behavior, event, relationship, or them in the film. Describe what elements intersect and how that affects the characters and the outcomes. At least one intersecting variable must be gender-related.
