Wollstonecraft promotes education in chapter 2, but there’s a number of things that we might notice are missing from her Feminism. Specifically, she does not say that women should be free to work outside the home, she doesn’t mention politics, and there seems to be no place for a respectable woman who isn’t married with children. When we read her feminism, I think it’s an easy conclusion to say that she’s still caged by her culture. Feminism had to grow and evolve so that we could admit that it’s respectable for a woman to have a job, and she needed to speak to people who understood the world of women through gender roles. Wollstonecraft herself seems to still understand the world through gender roles, and she thought that something like education would actually let women fulfill those roles better. Now, most self-described feminists reject gender roles altogether, and they credit Wollstonecraft with starting a process but reject her worldview. They would claim that Feminism was still in its infancy. The discussion question: what part of our culture is still in its infancy today? Where are we still caged by our culture, and what values will the future evolve and develop?
