Persuasive Speech Assignment Jones – COM 231 Online THE ASSIGNMENT/ LEARNING OUTCOMES The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to practice presenting an effective persuasive speech. As usual, the success of this presentation will hinge on your content, organization and delivery. For this assignment, you must use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence to persuade your audience. Specifically, your assignment is to persuade the audience to take action to support a group or organization in their efforts to address a societal problem. After completing the informative speech, students should be able to: Identify techniques and strategies for managing public speaking apprehension; Demonstrate competent delivery using effective vocal, verbal, and nonverbal skills; Illustrate competent critical thinking and listening skills through the process of self-evaluations, peer evaluation, or outside speaker evaluations; Create messages suitable to diverse audiences utilizing critical thinking and the application of effective audience analysis; Develop organized outlines based on credible research for the presentation of informative, persuasive, and special occasion speeches in a variety of environments; and Develop effective presentation aids and proficiently incorporate them in a speech BASIC REQUIREMENTS • You will develop and present to the class an original, persuasive speech using Monroe’s Motivated Sequence (as explained in class.) • The speech must be 6 to 7 minutes long and must be delivered in an extemporaneous speaking style. (Note: Speeches which are under 6 minutes or over 7 minutes will receive a grade deduction.) • You must include at least one visual aid in your speech. The quality of the visual aid will be graded according to the criteria discussed in class. The visual aid must clearly appeal to the audience’s pathos (emotions) or logos (logic.) Don’t just show an image that relates to the material. Choose a visual aid that helps us understand the information you are presenting better by appealing to logos or pathos. • A minimum of 4 sources should be used in preparing your speech. (You may use a website such as Wikipedia to get started, but it will NOT count as one of your 4 required sources.) • An outline of the speech (and works cited) must be submitted on the day of the speech, before you begin speaking, to your instructor. • During the speech all 4 sources must be verbally cited. OUTLINE GUIDELINES • Remember, a TYPED outline, complete with 4 sources, is due as a homework assignment before you give your speech. (There will be a point deduction if the outline is not typed and submitted by the due date.) • You must use a key-word phrase outline format. Be sure to include the title and specific purpose in the outline. (There will be a point deduction if the outline is not a “key-word phrase outline” with the required parts.) • Rules for videotaping speeches must be followed, including: – You must have at least four audience members visible before you start your speech – You must follow the Rules for Videotaping speeches regarding HOW you use your visual aid. (Please review the Rules for Videotaping Speeches documents/ video on our Blackboard site.) GETTING STARTED As stated above, your assignment is to persuade the audience to take action to support a group or organization in their efforts to address a societal problem. As such, you are already on track to complete the assignment: Review the steps of Monroe’s Motivated Sequence. (You will be weaving those steps into the Introduction, Body and Conclusion of your speech.) Refer back to the relevant Discussion Board postings and homework assignments we have completed over the last few weeks. (You should use your answers – and my feedback to those answers- as a reference.) The topic must be pre-approved by the instructor and the speech should follow the rules for appropriate topics and behavior discussed in the course syllabus. (By now, your topic has already been approved. If you choose to change your topic, please be sure to run it by me first.) OUTLINE GUIDELINES • Remember, a TYPED outline, in MLA format and complete with 4 sources, is due before you submit your videotaped speech. (There will be a point deduction if the outline is late.) • You must use a key-word phrase outline format. Be sure to include the title and specific purpose in the outline. The outline follows the same format we’ve been using all semester (Intro, Body, Conclusion) AND must also incorporate Monroe’s Motivated Sequence, as shown below. Please use this as a template for your own outline and speech. Be sure to follow the rules learned earlier in the semester regarding parts of the introduction (including starting your speech with an attention getter), using clear transitions, verbally citing sources, and providing a strong conclusion (including closing your speech with a strong closing statement.) TOPIC — 40 points Subject of speech pre-approved, appropriate to audience and ocassion, persuasive; Topic appropriately narrowed to fit time guidelines ORGANIZATION — 50 points Introduction: attention getting opening employed; topic clearly stated; speaker credibility developed; relevance to audience established; and speech previewed Body: main points obvious; clear distinction made between need, satisfaction and visualization; transitions used between points; internal summaries used within points; Conclusion: call to action clearly stated; summary of main points; implications of material highlighted; a feeling of completion developed via strong closing statement CONTENT — 60 points Monroe’s Motivated Sequence clearly developed and supported; Significant material developed in the speech; Information supported with examples; interestingly developed; clear appeals to logos and pathos; vocabulary appropriate; jargon and unfamiliar terms defined; Four sources clearly cited/ credible; visual aids well-constructed, enhance speech and clearly appeal to pathos or logos DELIVERY — 50 points Physical: strong eye contact; purposeful gestures; posture comfortable; notes used well; visual aids properly used Vocal: extemporaneous delivery/ notes used well; energetic; rate appropriate; volume appropriate; absence of fillers Deductions will be taken for the following: Outlines that are not typed, improperly formatted, have an incorrect purpose statement or that are not turned in before the speech; missing visual aids; speeches that do not meet the time requirements I’m looking forward to these final class presentations.
