SOC360: Globalization Fall 2022 The University of Southern Mississippi U sin g o utlin es t o u nders ta n d t h e r e ad in gs: ● Outlines are practical study tools because they help you organize your thoughts in a flowchart manner rather than writing a paragraph. Outlines work by breaking down the readings into larger themes, arguments, and supporting details. ● Outlines contain three components: structure, summary , and thematic analysis. ● W ays to format and organize your outlines include the following: ○ Symbols to organize the outline: bullet points, dashes, numbers, letters ○ T ext formatting also helps organize your outline: ■ bold , italics , underline , highlight ● Analysis: Y ou will write an annotated outline that summarizes and sociologically examines what you have learned in the reading. An annotated outline asks you to organize the main ideas of the paper . Y ou include more in-depth notes and analyses than just a simple summary . I want to see that you can connect with the readings, dissect them, and successfully synthesize the key terms, concepts, debates, and theories. Explain what this all means. The summary is the “who” and “what,” while the analysis is the “why and how .” Follow this 3-step model: 1. Summarize the reading in a concise, outlined format. 2 . Describe the key points/themes/arguments. Provide specific examples from the articles to back up those points. 3 . Explain how the reading connects to larger sociological analyses on the economy , technology , class, race, gender , inequality, or culture. ● Reading and note-taking tips: ○ Sociology readings can be dense and challenging, but my goal for you is to identify , define, and analyze the central themes and arguments. ○ It is more engaging and helpful to write notes while reading the articles to help you better comprehend what you are learning. ○ Y ou will encounter some terminology you are not familiar with–don’t skip over them! If there is a vocabulary word/term/concept you are unfamiliar with, Google the definition. ○ Be patient! Learning how to write- essays or annotated outlines- takes time, practice, and ef fort. Institutions include the media, the economy , technology, religion, the criminal justice system, government and politics, race, class, and gender . Institutions serve essential functions and roles that maintain the structure and cohesiveness of society , but they also serve as sources of conflict and inequality . I want you to connect globalization to these processes to answer the “what and how .” Questions to keep in the back of your mind in this class this semester: ■ Are globalization processes (cultural, social, economic, political) natural, or do people in power purposely design them? ■ In what ways has society transformed because of globalization? What are the pros and cons of globalization? ■ How does globalization produce, reproduce, or work to fight against systems of inequality along racial, class, and gender lines?
