Everybody Knows Psychology Is Not a Real Science Article Discussion

Each week you must read the selected literature by the time you come to class on Tuesday.

Eight times throughout the semester you will submit a reflective analysis paper wherein you

write about those pieces of literature. The purpose of these analyses is not to summarize the

readings, but instead to document the elements of the readings that you were surprised/puzzled/

inspired by. These papers will be due on Thursdays. A guide for writing these papers is below.

In 2 double‐spaced pages (1.5 pages isn’t enough to earn full credit) you should:

Very briefly summarize each article that you read (shoot for only 1‐2 sentences per article only give the main finding).

Then focus on one or two of the following aspects from ONE of the articles.

Puzzled by something?

What confuses you? Why is the aspect weird? What would

you predict instead? Why? How would you study it?

Surprised by something?

Why? What did you expect? Why do you think the authors

found what they did? How should their methods be different? Why?

Read the posts and respond. Examine the information posted and provide constructive feedback.

Primary Resource

The search strategy used for the database was choosing the subject social work and provided 28 databases. The databased used was SocINDEX with Full Text. The keywords that I used for the search was custodial grandparents. In order to limit the results, I selected full text, references available, peer reviewed, published date from April 2018 until present, for the publication type I choose primary source document, language in English, and article for document type. Verifying the Capella Library, I found an explanation regarding primary sources and secondary sources. In the explanation was mentioned that for an article to be classified as a primary resource needs to have; “A research question, brief literature review, description of methodology, discussion of results and a conclusion” (“Primary vs. Secondary Resources”).

Secondary Source

The databased used was Summon, the results for the same topic were 10,919. In the content type I select newspaper article to limit the results to 1,414.I referred to the explanation of secondary source found at Capella Library, and mention that this sources “Evaluate either one or perhaps a group of primary resources, do not conduct a research study, but instead comment on the studies that others have done, may be called a synthesis, an analysis, or a literature review of a particular subject and are great sources to use for finding primary resources on a subject” (“Primary vs. Secondary Resources”).

3) Ethical Dilemma

For this discussion:

  • Describe      an ethical issue presented in the readings for this unit and create a      research scenario where this issue could arise.
  • Explain      the potential problems and how you would handle it.
  • Justify      your position with evidence from the unit readings.

4)Response Guidelines

Read the post and respond to one. What other problems do you envision could develop based on the scenario presented and how it could be handled?

The main focus of the current readings are dealing with ethical dilemmas. What these readings have shown is that ethics are the central part of research studies. Therefore, in order to have sound research that is beneficial to the needs of the client and the research that is being performed, it is up to the researcher to have awareness of the ethical issues that may arise or th at could affect the validity of the research. In order to place meaning and understanding to the previous statement then one must define what is ethics. According to Babbies (2016), ethics is associated with morality. Therefore, ethics are elements of things that are either right or wrong. When an ethical issue arises in research, it really depends on the mindset of researcher as to what aspects of research would be morally right or wrong (Babbies, 2016). As a result, one would consider the standards that are beneficial for the research. The current readings discuss several ethical dilemmas that affect the way research has been conducted. The most common ethical dilemma discussed in each reading is that of voluntary participation and informed consent of the client. Most research that is performed interferes into the personal lives of the clients and it is up to the research to protect the rights of the client and maintain voluntary participation of the client and gaining consent from the client to participate in the research. In gaining consent from the client, there comes up the ethical issue of confidentiality and if any of the client’s information will be utilized by a third party outside of the research. It is up to the research to explain what limits to confidentiality are affected by the research and leave it up to the client to continue to participate in the research or not (American Psychological Association, 2010). Therefore, the researcher will put in the hands of the client to participate in the research study or not. The potential problems that could arise from not assuring confidentiality and gaining informed consent from the client could cause emotional harm to the client. The way to handle these issues are to explain to the client what confidentiality and limits is apply to confidentiality within the study as well as presenting an informed consent that would gain the consent of the client to enter the study. Moreover, sometimes it is good to give a debriefing before the study in order for the client to feel comfortable, however, one must be careful not to debrief too much as debriefing too much about the research study could interfere with the validity of the research.

5) Dissect an Article

For this discussion:

Find either a quantitative or qualitative research article.

  • Present      ethical issues the researchers noted or inferred in the article.
  • Discuss      possible alternatives to mitigate the ethical issues.

6) Response Guidelines

Respond two posts In your response, evaluate their posts against the rubric for analysis and critical thinking. Are their analyses, assumptions, and conclusions supported? Explain.

Main Post- Alicia Stephenson

The current study evaluates how parent–child relationship conflict and financial stress are associated with children’s school readiness (i.e., academic, psychosocial, and socioemotional indicators) ( Anderson, R. E. 2018). Latent profile analyses, incorporating financial stress, general stress, and parent-child relationship variables were used to test whether varying family stress profiles differentially predicted children’s school readiness in Black families with children entering kindergarten  (Anderson, R. E. 2018) . The authors stated that the quantitative interviews were conducted and recorded verbally, raising possible concerns of social desirability between families and researchers. Social desirability bias is a type of response bias that is the tendency of survey respondents to answer questions in a manner that will be viewed favorably by others (Lavrakas, P. J. 2008). It can take the form of over-reporting “good behavior” or under-reporting “bad”, or undesirable behavior (Lavrakas, P. J. 2008). In order to mitigate this issue researchers could use a different construct to collect data such as a making notation for specific behaviors observed to determine the answers to the survey questions. There is a stronger correlation for behavior over feelings when determining significance by using behaviors to determine stress indicators for answering the survey questions. Also, recent studies have demonstrated that technology (e.g., iPad or laptop computer) can assist in the collection of data to encourage candid responses and a sense of privacy  (Anderson, R. E. 2018) . The change in the data collection of quantitative interviews can reduce the limitations of this type of study.

The purpose of the discussion is to break down a research article that presents some ethical issues. Just reading the discussion question alone made me intrigue to further gather information that could draw of ethical dilemmas in research and ways that one could handle these types of situations. As a result, I chose an article from the Capella library that talks about ethical issues in the data collection for research from commercially sexually exploited children. As stated in previous discussions, ethical dilemmas are going to arise in any type of research. Therefore one must be aware of the ethical dilemmas that may occur in certain research. When performing research amongst children, there are several ethical dilemmas that may arise. There are a couple that really stood out to me within the article. These dilemmas include gaining informed consent from the parents to have the child or children to participate in the study as well as continuous exploitation of the client which could cause further emotional distress (Roman, Farrell, Bright, & Paruk, 2018). Researchers have stated that when child has been through such horrific traumas, it can be difficult to that person to self-identify as well as difficult to get those individuals to talk about the trauma  (Roman, Farrell, Bright, & Paruk, 2018). A way to ensure that the client feels comfortable and safe enough to discuss his or her problem and participate in research is to to build rapport with the client and reassure to the client that he or she is in a safe environment. Furthermore, to gain the consent of the parent, provide the parent with a brief synopsis of the research and the benefits it will have on the client.
