PSYC 304 Psychology Process of Perception and Environmental Stimulus Questions Essay

300 word answer to each essay question with APA formatted citations and references (APA title page and reference page are required

  1. Describe the process of perception as a series of steps, beginning with the environmental stimulus and culminating in the behavioral responses of perceiving, recognizing, and acting.
  2. Because the long axons of neurons look like electrical wires, and both neurons and electrical wires conduct electricity, it is tempting to equate the two. Compare and contrast the functioning of axons and electrical wires in terms of their structure and the nature of the electrical signals they conduct.
  3. What are the two answers (one “simple” and the other “profound”) to the question, “Why is our perception of colors and details worse in dim illumination than in bright illumination?”
  4. What is color constancy? Describe three factors that help achieve color constancy. What is brightness constancy? Describe the factors that are responsible for brightness constancy. Lastly, compare and contrast color constancy with brightness constancy.
  5. When you walk from outside, which is illuminated by sunlight, to inside, which is illuminated by “tungsten” illumination, your perception of colors remains fairly constant. But under some illuminations, such as street lights called “sodium vapor” lights that sometimes illuminate highways or parking lots, colors do seem to change. Why do you think color constancy would hold under some illuminations, but not others?
  6. What is sensory adaptation? How does it occur within the various senses? What function does sensory adaptation serve? Provide a relevant example that illustrates your point.
  7. What are the characteristics of the energy that we see as visible light? Provide an example illustrating how these characteristics are expressed when someone sees a rainbow. What types of things (situations and/or objects) can interfere with these characteristics?
  8. How does the eye transduce light energy into a neural message? What is the blind spot in the eye and how does it impact the transduction of light energy?
  9. How is visual information processed in the brain? What are some things (situations and/or objects) which can impede visual information being processed in the brain? Please include a relevant example to illustrate your answer.
  10. What theories contribute to our understanding of color vision? Discuss at least two relevant theories of color vision.

College of DuPage Psychology Correlations and How Do They Work Research Paper

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

What are correlations and how do they work? What is the simplest way to visually represent a correlation? If a correlation between two variables was .4, what could you conclude about the relationship between these variables? What if it was .9? Explain your answers.

Walden University Media Messages and The Impact on Body Image Discussion

Beauty images shown through the media are often unrealistic. Nevertheless, it’s difficult for children and adolescents, both male and female, to stop comparing themselves to the images they may see on television, in the movies, and in magazines. Generally, these comparisons can result in bad feelings about body image and one’s self-concept. As a consequence, children and adolescents might strive to attain the perfect body image and consider these goals as realistic. The result can be the development of an eating disorder.

For this Discussion, select an advertisement about body image, weight, food, etc., in today’s media. Think about your reactions to the advertisement. What did you think and feel about the advertisement? Consider how it might promote negative feelings about body image for a child or adolescent.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the advertisement you selected. Then, explain how this advertisement made you feel and explain why. Finally, explain one way this advertisement might affect a child or adolescent and how. Be specific.

How does the ability to conduct legal searches differ between the police officer, probation officer, and prison guard in the performance of their duties?

JUS 101 Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric
Your first milestone introduces you to the necessity of communication between agencies. There are several examples of how one incident requires the attention
of more than one branch of the criminal justice system. Put yourself in the shoes of the officers in the scenarios. How would you ensure that the best possible
outcome is accomplished?
Read the following scenarios and answer each prompt. Remember, you may complete your project as either a Word document or as a presentation. If you select
a presentation, it should be submitted as 2–3 slides. If you select a Word document, it should be 1–2 pages.
Specifically the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Communication and Collaboration
The branches of criminal justice may appear to function autonomously, but there is a lot of interaction and collaboration between them. In this part of
the career investigation, you will need to think about some scenarios where communication and collaboration would be required for these branches to
function effectively and which branch appears to be more in line with how you approach communication and collaboration.
a) How does the ability to conduct legal searches differ between the police officer, probation officer, and prison guard in the performance of their
duties? Give an example of interagency collaboration when conducting a legal search.
b) A police officer was conducting an investigation involving an incarcerated prisoner. The police officer would like to know who the prisoner spoke
to on the phone and who visited him. Describe who the police officer would need to collaborate with to obtain that information, explaining why.
c) Lou, a suspect the officer was investigating in a burglary case, was just convicted for that crime. Prior to his sentence, a pre-sentence report
must be conducted. Who is most likely to conduct the investigation: the police officer, probation officer, or the prison guard? Who will he or she
collaborate with to complete the report? Support your response by explaining how this process impacts interagency collaboration.
d) Select one court case where communication and collaboration were driving factors, and discuss the impact of that case in reshaping the role of
the corrections practitioner. Choose one of the three cases below to complete critical element D. You will use this same case study when
submitting your final project:
 Estelle v. Gamble, 429 U.S. 97 (1976)
https://www.law.uh.edu/healthlaw/perspectives/2009/(CC)%20Prison%20Health.pdf
 Turner v. Safley, 482 U.S. 78 (1987)

 In Re Rosenkrantz, 116 Cal. Rptr. 2d 69 (Cal. Ct. App. 2002)
http://www.leagle.com/decision/In%20CACO%2020090218046/IN%20RE%20ROSENKRANTZ
e) Based on your findings regarding the differences in how each branch communicates with each other, which career path is most in line with your
communication and collaboration practices and why?
Rubric
Guidelines for Submission: You may complete your project as either a Word document or as a presentation. If you select a presentation, it is submitted as 2–3
slides with speaker notes. The speaker notes are the words you would say if you were presenting the slides to an audience. The tone of these notes should be
professional. If you select a Word document, this should be 1–2 pages with 12-point Times New Roman font and one-inch margins. Your paper/presentationmust
include at least two sources cited in APA format.

***SPSS 2 is due Tuesday, July 14th, 2020 by 11:59PM (via SafeAssign)
This homework will test your ability to prepare cross-tabulations, bivariate graphics, and test
for statistical association and significance. You will need to put this all together and interpret
your results. For this assignment, you should have a cover page and begin each question on a
new page. There are 4 relationships to analyze—each worth 25%.
For each of the following relationships listed below:
a) 3 points – Write both a research and a null hypothesis.
b) 6 points – Write a paragraph explaining your theory as to why you would expect to
observe your hypothesized relationship.
c) 5 points – Prepare an appropriate cross-tabulation table that includes any relevant and
only the appropriate statistics to test your hypothesis.
d) 5 points – Prepare a bar chart.
e) 6 points – Write a paragraph about the relationship that uses the inferences you can
draw from looking at your table and analyzing your statistics.

***Sample Answer Two Variable Comparisons***
a) Research and Null Hypothesis:
1. Research Hypothesis: Those in the south are more likely to identify as
Republican than those not in the south.
2. Null Hypothesis: There is no relationship between whether someone lives in the
south or not and party identification.
b) Theory:
1. Your theory is derived from how you expect your variables to be related and
why.
2. Develop your theory prior to running tests on your relationship.
3. Your theory should be plausible and demonstrate a good understanding of both
your IV and DV.

e) Descriptive paragraph:
• Return to your theory—is how you expected the variables to be related
supported by the crosstab and appropriate statistical test?
• Report the results of your test for statistical significance: value of the statistic,
degrees of freedom, probability of making a type I error (p value).
• Make a decision about the null hypothesis (either reject the null and claim
statistical support for your research hypothesis; reject the null but don’t claim
statistical support for your research hypothesis; or fail to reject the null
hypothesis).
• Report the results of your test for degree and form, interpreting them
appropriately.
• Discuss any additional details about your relationship that you think relevant.

SPSS2 Grading Rubric & Answer Key
1. Hypotheses statement (3/25 points) – 1.5 Hypothesis, 1.5 Null
a. If you have a nominal IV, you must specify on these categories when writing
your hypothesis.
b. Avoid a nominal conceptualization of ordinal variables
c. Avoid normative hypotheses.
d. Avoid tautologies when writing you hypotheses.
e. Avoid using proper nouns in your hypotheses.
f. Do not reverse the IV and the DV. The IV causes the DV.
g. Remember, we are not testing you on whether you can correctly predict an
outcome! We are grading you on whether you can correctly interpret the
statistics and determine if there is support for your hypothesis. Therefore, you
must generate your hypotheses before your run bivariate statistics.
2. Theory behind hypothesis (6/25 points):
a. You theory needs to be reasonably plausible. Make sure that you have a clear
understanding of both variables. Remember, the codebooks for World, NES, GSS
and States are available online if you are confused about any of the variables.
These can be really helpful in clarifying confusing variables.
3. Cross tabulation (5/25 points):
a. Your crosstabs must have APA formatting. You can use the template and refer to
the instructional video for doing an APA style crosstab for guidance.
b. IV goes into columns (x-axis) and DV goes into rows (y-axis).
c. Make sure that you have a title and a source. Chi Squared, significance and a
measure of association should be a footnote as well.
d. Your measure of association should be appropriate to you level of measurement.
Remember, the lowest level of measurement should determine the measure of
association that you use. (Ordinal by Ordinal=Somer’s D, Tau B or Tau C;
Dichotomy as either the IV or the DV=Phi; Nominal as either the IV or the
DV=Cramer’s V)
e. Always include column percentages (do not include expected values).
f. Gamma overestimates the strength of the relationship. It is recommended that
you do not discuss Gamma, and thus you do not need to produce it for your
table.
4. Clustered bar chart (5/25 points):
a. This should be copied and pasted from SPSS. You need to add a title and the
source.
b. Remember, always put the IV into the ‘Define Clusters by” and the DV into the
“Category Axis” for Clustered Bar Charts. If you IV is not in the key, you need to
redo your chart)
c. Make sure that you have ‘% of cases” rather than count for full points.
-5-
5. Paragraph (6/25 points):
a) You need to make a decision about the null hypothesis, i.e. value of the statistic,
degrees of freedom, statistical significance. You must refer to the statistics to
justify your decision.
b) You need to talk about the strength of the relationship and support this with
statistics.
c) You need to talk about hypothesis, i.e. evaluation of directional relationship
(form). (Hint: remember that only ordinal by ordinal relationships can be
described as positive or negative for this assignment since they are the only
categorical data that has a specific rank. You need to have clear statement of the
direction for all of you analyses by referring to specific categories).
d) Remember, we are not grading you on whether or not your theory or hypothesis
were accurate. We are grading if you can correctly interpret if the data supports
or your hypothesis or not.
e) Never say that you have proven something. Just identify if the data supports
your theory/hypothesis.
