Defective Chessboard Problem

The assignment involves solving the Defective Chessboard Problem by using dynamic
programming approach on a board of size 2^k×2^k where 2≤k≤15. Write the source code of
the algorithm in Python.
Additional notes: A defective chessboard (also known as tromino tiling problem) is a
chessboard that has one unavailable (defective) position. A triomino is an L shaped object that
can cover three squares of a chessboard. A triomino has four orientations. Place the triominoes
on the 2^k×2^k defective chessboard so that all non-defective positions are covered.
Below is an example of solving defective chessboard problem using divide and conquer
approach. Maybe can modify it and implements the dynamic programming approach to solve
this problem.
https://medium.com/@Polaris000/visualizing-the-defective-chessboard-problemaa5fc38b6e5e
Meanwhile, this is an example of dynamic programming that used to solve the other problem,
Tiling with Dominoes Problem. Quite different from defective chessboard problem where we
need to have one tile that is defective and fill the other tiles with trominos that can have 4
orientations. However, this might as well help to give more understanding on how dynamic
programming works.

Consumer Math

Description

Consumer Math:

Being involved in your local community is important for a variety of reasons. It affords you the opportunity to connect with, help, and strengthen the lives of others. It can give you a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment as you form bonds with your neighbors. If you find a need in your community, it is a good idea to collect data regarding that need. The data may reinforce your idea that there is a need or it may even point you in a different direction of need. Using a data-driven approach to solve a community problem will help you be successful.

Initial Response Post:

For the Unit 5 Discussion Board, you will write and post an essay about civic participation. Propose a community program that you would like to kick start. Choose something you are passionate about: health care, sports, politics, education, community outreach, crime prevention, beautification, animals, etc. It can be something you do once or something you do on an ongoing basis.

Your 250 word minimum essay should include:

A brief overview of the community program you would like to kick start.

Proposed budget percentages for your program to help prepare for fundraising (administrative costs, supplies, rent, advertising, etc.).

Proposed number of volunteers needed for your program. Also calculate the percentage of volunteers based on total number of people in the community (number of volunteers ÷ population of community).

Estimated percentage of people (or animals) in the community that would benefit from the program.

Every piece of writing should have an introduction, body, and conclusion. A good way to plan this particular reflective essay is to write an introduction to the essay. Next, write at least three body paragraphs. Finish with your conclusion paragraph.

Your essay and outside sources for this essay need to be cited in proper APA format. You can find numerous APA resources in the Academic Success Center Reference Library on the Research, Citation, and Plagiarism page. https://campus2.purdueglobal.edu/page/using-sources

Your essay should include a highly developed purpose and viewpoint; it should also be written in Standard English and demonstrate exceptional content, organization, style, grammar, and mechanics. There should be no evidence of plagiarism. If you are unsure about what constitutes plagiarism, please review the plagiarism policy.

Peer Reply 1:

You are a reporter for the local newspaper or television network in your community. The kick start community program run by your fellow classmate is doing better than expected. Because of that, a new budget is being proposed for the upcoming fiscal year.

In your reply, report on an actual percentage of people (or animals) benefiting from the current program, a new percentage of volunteers needed for the program in the future, and new budget percentages for the program for the upcoming fiscal year.

reply to this!!

Hello Everyone,

I live in a community that doesn’t have programs available specifically for disabled children and their families to connect with others in the same situation. A community program I would start is a weekly camp for physically and mentally disabled children. The camp would take place on Saturday mornings from 9 am until noon during the summer. It would give the children a chance to socialize with other children living with disabilities. This type of camp would be geared toward several aspects of growth and development: social skills, motor skills, language skills, and cognitive skills. The activity would be soccer. There would be different stations that focus on different aspects of the sport that allow for every child to be able to participate, no matter their disability. The parent(s) would be required to stay as the volunteers running the camp would not have any medical/behavioral training. With a total budget of $3,000, 80.1% of the budget will be necessary. The rest can be used to replace supplies, additional fundraising, and/or advertising for the next year. The number of volunteers needed would depend on the amount of children. 1 volunteer is needed for every 4 children. If 45 children register, then a minimum of 12 volunteers will be required. The volunteers would be recruited through the local high school which has about 500 students total. The percentage of volunteers based on the high school community would be 2% (12/500). The percentage of volunteers based on the entire community would be 0.2% (12/5822).

The people who would benefit from the program would be the children with disabilities who attend, their families, the volunteers, and the families of the volunteers. The average family size is 3.7 (we will round up to 4). Assuming it is one volunteer and one child attending the camp per family, that would make 45 families of 4 people and 12 families of 4 people that would benefit from this program. A total of 3.9% of the community would benefit from this program.

If even a small percentage of the community benefits from the program, it is worth it. It is important for children living with disabilities to connect with others who understand what they are going through or have similar cognitive processes. The experience the volunteers get working with these children will open their eyes to those who struggle in day to day life and make them take less in their life for granted. This realization will benefit their parents and their siblings. The siblings of the volunteers might want to volunteer when they reach high school as well. The families of the disabled children will be able to swap experiences, advice, and resources to help each other. It will also be nice for them to connect with families that go through the same or similar situations. The depth at which all involved will benefit makes the program so much more important than the community may realize.

Discussion Case Enron: In order to understand Enron’s financial statements, one must first understand two areas of the company’s business.

1
Discussion Case
Enron
On December 2, 2001 Enron Corporation filed for bankruptcy and shocked the financial world.
Enron was the seventh largest company (by revenue) in the United States. How could this high
profile company have failed? A number of articles and books have profiled the company’s
aggressive personnel policies where every year they “weeded out” a bottom tier of employees.
There have been significant discussions of Enron’s use of special purpose entities and “off balance
sheet” debt (however, there has been little discussion of off balance sheet assets). Other topics
include Enron’s use of “mark-to-market” accounting and other transactions designed to simply
allow Enron to hit targets so that managers could earn their bonuses. Some of these transactions
involved collusion with Enron’s lenders. Early in 2002, Congress, the SEC, the Justice
Department, and the press were all investigating this case for evidence of wrongdoing. You will
find a number of articles in business and news magazines from mid December 2001 through
March 2002 with substantial details about the Enron collapse. However, there is a significant
aspect of the story that is not told. Few have discussed what could have been learned
from Enron’s financial statements.
Required:
Prior to coming to class, address the following questions based on your evaluation of Enron’s
financial statements for the years 1999 and 2000 (available on the class website). An Excel
spreadsheet with Enron financial data is also available on the class website under the filename
“Discussion Case – Enron (Data)” as is the Commonly Used Ratios under the filename “Discussion
Case – Enron (Ratios).”
Problem 1: Company
1a. What was Enron’s business? Please answer in one-half page or less.
1b. In order to understand Enron’s financial statements, one must first understand two areas of
the company’s business. Please respond to the following questions using Enron’s financial
statements.
 What were “Price Risk Management Activities”?
 What were “Merchant Assets and Investments”?
1c. How was Enron able to double revenues from 1999 to 2000? Please respond in one-half page
or less?
Problem 2: Information for various ratios
Using an Excel spreadsheet:
2a. Show how you calculate net income to common shareholders (i.e. net income less minority
interest and preferred dividends) for Enron Corporation for the year ended December 31,
2000. Include any adjustments for earnings quality.
Explain any assumptions you made in answering the question here.
Assumptions made in calculating net income to common shareholders for the year ended:
Year ended Dec 31,
2000
2
2b. Show how you calculate sustainable operating cash flow for Enron Corporation for the year
ended December 31, 2000.
Explain any important assumptions you made in answering the question here.
Assumptions made in calculating sustainable operating cash flow for the year ended:
Year ended Dec 31,
2000
2c. Calculate the Commonly Used Ratios for Enron Corporation for the years ended December 31,
2000 and December 31, 1999. Note: For profitability ratios, first adjust for earnings quality
issues. Use sustainable cash flow from operations (as computed in 2b.) for cash flow from
operations is all applicable ratios.
Problem 3: Liquidity Risk
3. Identify other financial resources (i.e. other than assets, etc.) at Enron’s disposal and indicate
the relevance of these resources to Enron’s liquidity as of December 31, 2000. Address any
concerns about off balance sheet obligations that will need to be met during the upcoming
year. Also address any guarantees that Enron may be contingently liable for.

PHIL 109 Is your chosen example a real or nominal definition? If it is real, then is it logical, causal, or descriptive?

PHIL 109: Final Exam (Summer 2020)
Hint: It is possible to extract everything you need for the final exam from the first two paragraphs of the essay. However, you may be able to find
other examples elsewhere in the essay that you find easier. Read the entire essay once through; then go back to it to find your preferred examples.
Read the essay at the link, and then in one file answer the 20 questions below as your personal final exam:
https://cpb-us-w2.wpmucdn.com/campuspress.yale.edu/dist/7/272/files/2019/06/joint-review.pdf
Part I: The First Action of the Mind (Conceptualization)
1. Quote a sentence from the assigned essay in which a definition is given (citing the page number for your
quotation). Is your chosen example a real or nominal definition? If it is real, then is it logical, causal, or
descriptive? If it is logical, then distinguish both the genus and the essential difference. If it is causal, then
distinguish whether there are formal, final, material, or efficient causes involved. If it is descriptive, then state
whether it uses a property or an accident. [Review: see Lessons 10–12]
Part II: The Second Action of the Mind (Judgment)
2. Quote a sentence from the assigned essay in which a universal affirmative Type A proposition is given
(citing the page number for your quotation). Rewrite the proposition in your chosen example in standard form,
distinguishing the subject term from the predicate term by using single uppercase letters to define your terms.
[Review: see Lessons 14–17]
3. For the Type A proposition in #2 above, state its contrary, its contradictory, and its subalternate (each in
standard form, distinguishing the subject term from the predicate term by using single uppercase letters to

Part III: The Third Action of the Mind (Argument)
16. Quote a passage from the assigned essay in which you find a syllogism, an enthymeme, or an epicheirema
(citing the page number for your quotation). Choose only one argument type. Rewrite each proposition in your
chosen example in standard form, distinguishing the conclusion’s subject term from the conclusion’s predicate
term, as well as the middle term(s), by using single uppercase letters to define your terms, and labelling each
proposition Type as A, E, I, or O. Use square brackets to enclose any unspoken premises assumed in
enthymematic reasoning, if applicable. [Review: see Lessons 24–28]
17. Analyze the argument in #16 above by checking it for validity and then stating whether it is VALID or
INVALID. Prove your answer by drawing a Venn diagram for the argument, labeling it according to your
analysis in #16 above. If the argument is INVALID, state each one of the four rules which the argument
violates. If the argument is VALID, state whether or not it is SOUND, and why. [Review: see Lessons 25–27]
18. Quote another passage from the assigned essay (different from your example in #16) in which you find a
syllogism, an enthymeme, or an epicheirema (citing the page number for your quotation). Choose only one.
Rewrite each proposition in your chosen example in standard form, distinguishing the conclusion’s subject
term from the conclusion’s predicate term, as well as the middle term(s), by using single uppercase letters to
define your terms, and labelling each proposition Type as A, E, I, or O. Use square brackets to enclose any
unspoken premises assumed in enthymematic reasoning, if applicable. If you wish, instead of citing another
passage, you can paraphrase what you discern the main argument of the entire essay to be, by stating your
interpretation as a syllogism, enthymeme, or epicheirema, and then formalizing that argument according to the
preceding symbolization instructions for #18. [Review: see Lessons 24–28]
19. Analyze the argument in #18 above by checking it for validity and then stating whether it is VALID or
INVALID. Prove your answer by drawing a Venn diagram for the argument, labeling it according to your
analysis in #18 above. If the argument is INVALID, state each one of the four rules which the argument
violates. If the argument is VALID, state whether or not it is SOUND, and why. [Review: see Lessons 25–27]
20. Quote a passage from the assigned essay in which you find a modus ponens argument, a modus tollens
argument, a denying the antecedent fallacy, an affirming the consequent fallacy, a sorites, a hypothetical
syllogism, a conjunctive syllogism, a disjunctive syllogism, a constructive dilemma, a destructive dilemma, or
a reductio ad absurdum argument (citing the page number for your quotation). Choose only one argument
type. Symbolize your chosen argument by using the techniques you learned in this course. State whether your
chosen argument is VALID or INVALID. Is it also SOUND? [Review: see Lessons 21–22, 30–31, and 33]

Each section will be worth 25 points and any required graphs, charts or visuals will be worth 5 points – so read carefully!

Remember:     Earth cycles (Water, CO2, Nitrogen, Rock, Milankovitch, Seasonal)

Earth Systems (Biosphere, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere and Lithosphere) and Human impact!
