Week 3 Discussion

DQ1 Identify one group of stakeholders in curriculum development . How could you include your identified group of stakeholders in curriculum development for a program in your area of interest (academic/hospital-based or patient education)? Be specific in the steps to carry out your plan to include this group. Support your response with literature.

DQ2 Who would you include in the community of interest when you are contemplating beginning a new nursing education program? Support your response with literature.

NUR647E Nursing Education Seminar 1

Week 4 Discussion

DQ1 When you review various curricular plans, you may see a variety of terms. Some programs use the term “program outcomes” while others use the term “terminal objectives” for those actions that the student is expected to accomplish upon graduation. The same is true for individual courses. Some programs call the knowledge and skills that a student should master by the end of the course “course outcomes” while others use the term “course objectives.” All of the terms have a specified definition in literature and according to accreditation agencies. What are the similarities and differences between the terms according to the literature and to accrediting agencies? Select a program or course (other than GCU) and critique their use of these terms. Do they use them in a manner consistent with the literature and/or accreditation agencies or do they use them differently? Include your review of the program in your response to this discussion question. Support your response with literature. Your critique could be at the program level or at the course level. You do not need to do both levels.

DQ2 What would be important for you to know about the program’s philosophy, mission, and goals if you were interviewing for a position at that university? Why? Support your response with literature.

NUR647E Nursing Education Seminar 1

Week 5 Discussion

DQ1 The term andragogy is often used to describe Malcom Knowles’ theory of adult learning, while the term pedagogy was traditionally used to describe curriculum developed for children. Select a course you took lately and look for the principles of andragogy or pedagogy in the course structure. Share your findings with your classmates and whether or not you thought the curriculum was effective. Support your response with literature and with examples.

DQ2 What learning theory do you see as the foundation for this course? Support your response with literature and with examples.

DQ1 Find a current (less than 5 years old) research article on domains of learning. Summarize the article for your classmates in one or two paragraphs. Explain why you chose this study and how you could use this information in your selected area of education (academic, staff, or patient). Be sure to include the entire citation in APA format. The article you select cannot be from any of the course materials or supplemental readings. Be aware that it is a violation of copyright law to post the entire text of an article by someone else to an online discussion board. So be sure to post only the citation information so that the article can be located it if others are interested in reading it.

DQ2 Select a topic regarding the diversity in health care and write an objective from the affective domain for that topic.

Module 5 Assignment

Assignment: Decoding Iconography

Name: ______________________________________________________________________

Subject Matter (list all items that make up the subject matter):

Symbolism (list the symbolism of the subject matter listed above):

Meaning (What is the meaning and how does the subject matter and symbols create the overall meaning of the work of art?):

As noted in your textbook, iconography refers to the themes and symbols in a work of art and their connections with the meanings of the work. Complex iconographies sometimes get lost across generations and cultures, and require research to decode. However, the painting depicted here uses many symbols that are still comprehensible to us today.

  1. Answer the following:
  2. What objects are represented in this painting? In other words, what is the “surface” subject matter?
  3. What does each object symbolize?
  4. Based on your interpretation of the symbols, what is the overall message of the piece, as stated in one or two sentences?
  5. Fill out the document with your findings and submit to the instructor.

Final Paper

Your final paper will be a three-page Formal Analysis. This assignment will required you to visit and observe a work of contemporary art (made after 1960). You may select a work from any major museum: The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Museum of Modern Art, etc. Not a commercial gallery. You should also include an image of the artwork that you have analyzed as well as a selfie as proof of attendance, at the end of the paper. This paper is a detailed visual analysis of an artwork of any media (video, photography, textile, sculpture, painting, drawing, etc.) and should come from your own one-on-one engagement with a work of art.

ART 105 Introduction to Visual Art

Journal: “What Qualities Make For A Good Work Of Art?”

Journal assignments are designed to facilitate critical thinking about issues related to art.

  1. Carefully consider your own, personal definition of “good” art. Then, locate a work of art that you believe constitutes “good” visual art and illustrates your ideas. There are no limitations regarding what type of visual art you can select–for example, you may use an advertising image, a work of fine art, an album cover, etc. The image may be the work of either a known or an unknown artist. Any visual medium (painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, fashion design, etc.) is acceptable.
  2. Write a one page journal response addressing the following: What qualities make for a good work of art? What makes your chosen artwork “good?” Bear in mind that explaining “what is good” is not the same thing as explaining “what I like,” and your answers need to contain a deeper level of reflection. Avoid responses such as “Good art is a matter of opinion and is in the eye of the beholder.”

Grades will be determined based on the depth and thoughtfulness of your response.

Requirements: Your journal entry should be a minimum of 300 words long. Include your image in digital format in your journal response. Your writing must be proofread for errors and spell checked. Students who have obviously not proofread and/or spell checked their entries or have not followed the above instructions will lose points.

How to hand-in your work:

Click the “Journal Response: What Qualities Make For A Good Work Of Art?” link above. Type your name in the “Comments” field and attach your work as a Word document file. (Be sure the file name contains your last name as part of it.) If you do not have Microsoft Word, you may copy and paste your work into the “Comments” box. Click “Submit” to hand in your work.

Journal: Mini Compare/Contrast Formal Analysis

A Formal Analysis (also called a visual or stylistic analysis) is a description of a work of art’s visual elements and an analysis of how they convey meaning to the viewer. Reread the Compare + Contrast example on p. 15 of your text (Chapter 1) for an example of a short compare/contrast formal analysis.

Next, compare and contrast Jacob Lawrence’s Harriet Tubman Series no. 4 with Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers . In both works, color, whether clashes of red and yellow or blends of blues and violets, is central in communicating ambience. What feelings or messages are conveyed by the choice of color palette? For example, do you find one painting soothing and the other irritating? What do the palette choices suggest about the moods conveyed in the paintings? How do the artists also use texture, shape, space, and other visual elements to underscore the effects of color on the viewer?

Requirements: Your journal entry should be a minimum of 300 words long. Journal responses must be proofread for errors and spell checked. Students who have obviously not proofread and/or spell checked their entries or have not followed the above instructions will lose points.

How to hand in your work: When saving your work, be sure to incorporate your last name into the file name. Next, click the “Journal: Compare/Contrast Formal Analysis” link above. Type in your name in the “Comments” text box and attach your work as a Word document file. If you do not have Microsoft Word, copy and paste your work into the “Comments” box. Click “Submit” to hand in your work.

Journal: Comparing and Contrasting Woodcuts

Albrecht Dürer, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, 1498 Emil Nolde, Prophet, 1912

Compare and contrast Albrecht Dürer, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, 1498, with Emil Nolde, Prophet, 1912. Both images are woodcuts, and both images are famous and powerful prints, but they “work” for entirely different reasons.

  1. First, explain how the woodcut process works—in your own words.
  2. Second, compare and contrast the two prints. What feelings or emotions are conveyed by the two images? How do the artists’ choices in technique, style, and composition affect the impact on the viewer?

Requirements: Your journal entry should be a minimum of 300 words long. Journal responses must be proofread for errors and spell checked. Students who have obviously not proofread and/or spell checked their entries or have not followed the above instructions will lose points.

How to hand in your work:

Journal: Shirin Neshat — Photographer, Video Artist, Filmmaker

First, use the index to look up and read the passages on Shirin Neshat in your textbook (pg. 161-2) Then watch the documentary video Shirin Neshat: Expressing the Inexpressible. Keep the following questions in mind as you take notes on the film: What concepts does Shirin Neshat deal with in her work? What benefits does working in video, film, and non-traditional photography (i.e. painting on photographs) give her as an artist? How do these media allow her to express her ideas in a way that traditional mediums like drawing, painting, printmaking, or sculpture would not? Finally, how would the experience of viewing Shirin Neshat’s video and film installations in a museum context be fundamentally different than viewing her work in this video?

To view the video, click on the link below these instructions.

Requirements: Your journal entry should be a minimum of 300 words long. Journal responses must be proofread for errors and spell checked. Students who have obviously not proofread and/or spell checked their entries or have not followed the above instructions will lose points

ART 105 Introduction to Visual Art

Journal: Site-Specific Art Proposal

According to your textbook (pg. 193), four different types of site-specific art are: land art, ephemeral art, public art, and monuments or memorials. However, these terms are by no means mutually exclusive. A single artwork can fit more than one of these categories simultaneously.

Instructions: Create a proposal for your own site-specific artwork that fits a minimum of three of the four site-specific categories listed above. You do not need to draw or build your project, so dream big. What you do need to do is explain your piece in detail (in both form and meaning), title your piece, and explain how your piece is site specific and fits three of the four categories.

As always, your journal entry should be a minimum of 300 words long. Journal responses must be proofread for errors and spell checked. Students who have obviously not proofread and/or spell checked their entries or have not followed the above instructions will lose points.

Example: Take as an example Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, 1969-70 (pictured in page 194 of your textbook), which can be seen to fit all four categories. (Remember, however, that you will be inventing your own piece, not finding one in the textbook!)

Smithson was inspired to create Spiral Jetty as he was scouting out the Great Salt Lake in Utah for possible land art locations. He discovered a site littered with abandoned equipment left behind by a mining company. Apparently, the mining company had tried to extract tar and oil from the site, but had left their equipment behind when the attempt failed. Smithson saw the site as evidence of nature’s enduring power; he believed that despite whatever harm humans may inflict upon nature, nature will reclaim itself in the end, outliving humankind. Thus, Spiral Jetty was meant to be a monument to nature.

Smithson wanted Spiral Jetty to relate to its site in both its form and its function. Therefore, he researched the site before determining the shape the jetty would take. He learned of a local Native American legend stating that an underground tunnel or vent ran from the Great Salt Lake to the Pacific Ocean, creating a whirlpool in the middle of the lake. He also wanted to relate the high salt concentration in the Great Salt Like to the concept that salt molecules are spiral-like in nature. Thus, the shape of the jetty was determined the characteristics of the site itself, reinforcing its site-specificity. Clearly, a spiral jetty would not work anywhere else but in the Great Salt Lake.

Spiral Jetty was constructed out of local dirt and rocks moved into position via bulldozers and earthmoving equipment. Since its original inception, its mediums have expanded to include pink bacterial forms growing on the jetty and the accumulation of white salt crystals. Because it is made out of the natural environment, it is clearly distinguished as a work of land art.

When Spiral Jetty was created, Utah was in the midst of a drought. Subsequently, when rain levels rose to normal several years later, Spiral Jetty was completely submerged. Much of the time, Spiral Jetty is now completely under water, but during drought conditions, the jetty returns to view. Eventually, however, Spiral Jetty will completely erode, and thus is temporary or ephemeral in nature (although much ephemeral art is meant to have a much shorter lifespan than Spiral Jetty). This is apt, as the piece is meant to speak to nature’s power to reclaim itself despite human intervention in the landscape.

Finally, although the piece is in a remote location “maintained” by the Dia Art Foundation, it is meant to be visited by all those who wish to make the pilgrimage. It is not in the collection of a single collector, museum, or gallery, but is mean to be owned by “the public.” The piece is thus also a work of public art.

Journal: Good Art Revisited

Journal assignments are designed to facilitate critical thinking about issues related to art.

For your first journal assignment at the beginning of the semester (Module 2), you were asked to consider the following question:

What qualities make for a good work of art?

For your final journal assignment, revisit your original answer. Have any of your ideas changed as a result of this course? Have your definitions of “good” art narrowed or expanded? If so, in what ways? Refer to specific artworks you have learned about this semester in your answer.

Requirements: Your journal entry should be a minimum of 300 words long. Include your image in digital format in your journal response. Your writing must be proofread for errors and spell checked. Students who have obviously not proofread and/or spell checked their entries or have not followed the above instructions will lose points.

How to hand-in your work: Click the “Good Art Revisited” link above. Type your name in the “Comments” field and attach your work as a Word document file. (Be sure the file name contains your last name as part of it.) If you do not have Microsoft Word, you may copy and paste your work into the “Comments” box. Click “Submit” to hand in your work.

Module 3 Discussion

Expressive Qualities of Lines

Search for a visual work that strikes you as interesting. Please copy it onto your desktop and attach the image or copy the link. See menu above the type box. Don’t settle for the first image you find. Look at both, art and non art sources.

Here are a few sources:

http://www.thejealouscurator.com/blog/

http://hyperallergic.com/

http://www.thisiscolossal.com/

Look for a linear component in the work and discuss the type and expressive quality of the lines. Are the lines measured and calculated as in Mangold’s work, do they have a emotional human presence such as Ritchie’s, or are they working on a completely new way? (see pg. 21 in our book)

Your initial response is due Wednesday, at midnight. Be sure to reply to two other students by Sunday, at midnight.

Painting

Painting is self-discovery. Every good artist paints what he is.” – Artist Jackson Pollock

What do you think Jackson Pollock meant by this statement? Read the section about Jackson Pollock on pgs. 492-3 of your textbook. (You may also use the internet to research Pollock’s life and painting methods.) Then explain how you think Pollock specifically used painting as self-discovery.

Your initial response is due Wednesday, at midnight. Be sure to reply to two other students by Sunday, at midnight.

Module 7 Discussion

Photo Silkscreen and Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol, Marilyn Diptych, photo silkscreen on canvas, 1962

Andy Warhol is one of the best known artists to have used the photo silkscreen medium on a wide scale. When you look at Marilyn Diptych, reproduced above, you will notice there are many “imperfections” in the piece, such as misregistered colors, areas that have received too much or too little ink, etc. Yet Andy Warhol was a consummate draftsman; before becoming a fine artist, he had won multiple awards for his ad designs and was the highest paid commercial artist in New York City. It is safe to assume that these “imperfections” are intentional and designed to add to the piece’s content.

Warhol created Marilyn Diptych in the weeks after her death. In many ways, it is a response to her death. However, Marilyn Diptych suggests a much different reaction to her death than Audrey Flack’s Marilyn. (Audrey Flack’s Marilyn was the painting on for “Decoding Iconography” pg13.)

Carefully observe the Warhol’s stylistic choices in this piece. Why do you think he wanted Marilyn Diptych to look this way? What is Warhol trying to say about Marilyn Monroe, society, or himself via the use of formal elements and design principles? Be sure to back up your response. (Hint: Use the index in the back of your textbook to locate and read the passages on Andy Warhol’s work. They may help stimulate your ideas.)

Your initial posting is due Wednesday, at midnight. Be sure to reply to two other students by Sunday, at midnight. Let’s get a dialogue going and see what we can learn from each other!

Photography in the Digital Age

How do you see social media like Instagram, Pinterest, and other image based Apps, influencing the way we view photography? How does viewing an image on a smart phone or online differ than viewing a photograph as a material object in a museum and/or gallery? Be specific in your claims and your examples.

ART 105 Introduction to Visual Art

Module 9 Discussion

Readymades and Appropriation Art

Carefully read the sections in Chapter 11 on Marcel Duchamp and readymades and on Sherrie Levine and appropriation art. Duchamp’s readymades were revolutionary because they shifted the definition of art from a skillfully hand-made object to art as idea or concept. Duchamp’s concept of the readymade has had a profound impact on contemporary art—a 2004 survey of over 500 artists, museum curators, art dealers, and critics voted Fountain the most influential work of modern art ever created. Those that voted most overwhelmingly for Fountain were the artists themselves.

In 1991, artist Sherrie Levine made Fountains after Duchamp. In a sense, Levine has appropriated an appropriation, since Duchamp himself had appropriated the Mott Plumbing Company, who mass-manufactured the urinal in Fountain to begin with. Your textbook says that Levine’s work is meant to question artistic ideas like authorship and originality. How does Fountains After Duchamp do this? What other notions does Levine’s piece bring up or challenge? (You may use the internet to research Levine’s ideas, but be sure to cite your sources.)

Your initial response is due Wednesday, at midnight. Be sure to reply to two other students by Sunday, at midnight.

Module 10 Discussion

Site-Specific Art

In this module we are focusing on site-specific art, art that is made for one particular location and would be diminished or destroyed if removed from its intended setting. Select one site-specific work from your textbook, either from Chapter 11 or elsewhere, and explain how its environment is necessary for the piece to “work.” Choose a piece that another student has not yet written about. Why would the piece fail to work if sited elsewhere? Consider both the form (style) of the piece and its intended message/content. Either post an image of the piece in your discussion board response, or else include the artist’s name, the title of the piece, and the page number for easy reference.

Fallingwater vs. Farnsworth House

In creating works of architecture, architects must not only be sensitive to the aesthetics of their structures, but they must also pay attention to the relationships between their structures and the building sites. Read about Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater (pg. 237) and read ahead on Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House (p. 526). Both were built as single family homes and both incorporate a landscape environment that is crucial to the architecture. Compare and contrast the way these two homes are integrated with (or antagonistic to) their setting. In what ways are they similar, and how does the interaction between building and natural environment function differently?

Compare and Contrast

1) Venus of Villendorf (p. 249) and Cycladic idol ( p. 266)

2) Victory Stele of Naram Sin (p. 253) and Stele inscribed with the Law Code of Hammurabi (p. 254)

3) Statue of Khafre from Gizeh (p. 259) and Pillar statue of Akhenaton from Temple of Amen-Re, Karnak (see image below)

Use stylistic analysis along with what you have learned from the textbook to discuss the similarities and differences in the paired pieces. Then explain why these observations are important. In other words, what do these attributes tell us about the cultures that made them?

Reply to this thread by Wednesday, at midnight. Be sure to comment substantively on at least two other students’ posts before Sunday at midnight. At least one of your responses should be on a pairing you did not choose for your initial post.

Non-Western Art and European Modernism

Non-Western art is widely recognized by art historians as one of the defining influences on the development of European modernism. Reread the passage in your textbook on African Art and Picasso (p. 466). How do you feel about European artists appropriating aspects of Non-Western art into their work? Is there a potential problem with this, or is it a positive development? Refer to any information from your textbook as part of your answer.

Note: In this question, I am not asking so much about appropriation, but rather, the appropriation of Non-Western cultures.

Action Research and Organizational Development Videos

There are a huge number of individuals and firms who are out there selling their organizational development services. Take a look at videos and/or webpages of OD consultants and find a company or individual that really stands out in a good or bad way. Share the link to the video or webpage, and explain what made this particular consultant or consulting firm stand out to you. Also, discuss whether or not the material presented in the video or webpage seems to be consistent with what you read about in the background readings. For example, does this consultant seem to practice a form of action research or do they do something entirely different?

One consultant whose videos or webpage you may want to check out is Dr. Jeremy Lurey, as he is the author of one of your readings for this module and the CEO of Plus Delta Consulting. Take a look at one of his videos if you find one that looks interesting, and let your classmates know how the video is similar or different to his reading in the background materials.

Gurus of Large Group Interventions

Sandra Janoff and Marvin Weisbord are the original developers of the Future Search method and are the founders of the Future Search Network. Corporations pay a lot of money for their services, but fortunately they have a few videos up on YouTube so you can get a taste of what kind of material they go through when giving a seminar. Find some videos from one or both of them and share the link to the video that you find the most useful.

owen-open space technologyHarrison Owen is the developer of Open Space Technology. He also has a few videos up on YouTube as well. Take a look at some of his videos and share the link to one that you found to be the most useful.

Answer the following questions concerning the videos on Future Search and Open Space:

Did the videos help you understand any of the concepts from the background readings? Be specific as to what concepts were covered in the videos that were also covered in the readings.

Was the video well organized and presented? Based on the video, are you surprised that Weisbord, Janoff, and Owen are successful consultants?

Module 3 Discussion

Job Design and Job Crafting Surveys

For this discussion, you will be filling out some surveys based on the concepts of job redesign and job crafting. The job design survey is pretty simple, self-explanatory, and follows the five core job dimensions discussed in the background readings: http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/leader/jobsurvey.html

The job crafting survey appears in a complicated article, but the survey is relatively straightforward and appears on page 177 of the article linked below. For each question, a “5” indicates strong agreement, a “4” means moderate agreement, a “3” means neutral, a “2” means mild disagreement, and a “1” means strong disagreement. There are four dimensions of job crafting on this survey. All of these dimensions have five questions, with the exception of “decreasing hindering job demands,” which has six questions. The total possible score on each dimension is either 25 or 30, depending on the number of questions: http://www.academia.edu/2796261/Development_and_validation_of_the_job_crafting_scale. You may also click the following link to access the Job Crafting Survey.

Report your scores on both surveys to your classmates and explain whether or not the results accurately describe your current job situation and the overall usefulness of each survey.

Also, discuss any practical implications that the results of each survey has on your organization. Do the results indicate that any specific job redesign or job crafting intervention should be done? Would you recommend either survey be used for a wider range of employees at your organization to assist in deciding on a job redesign or job crafting strategy?

Module 4 Discussion

Appreciative Inquiry Interview Questions

Suppose your supervisor has asked you to lead an Appreciative Inquiry process and as a first step you need to conduct some interviews with your coworkers. Do a search on “Appreciative Inquiry Questions” or “Appreciative Inquiry Interview Questions” and find two or three questions that you think would work best for interviewing your coworkers.

For your first post, list the questions that you found and the links to the Web pages where you found the questions. Explain why you chose the questions and why you think they would work well with your coworkers. Don’t just use the first two Web pages that pop up when you do your search unless you really think these links provide the best questions.

Remember to follow up and comment on the posts of your classmates. For those of you who are brave or are especially interested in Appreciative Inquiry, try asking a coworker or two some of the questions that you found and see how they respond. Share your experiences with your classmates.

Module 4 Reflection Discussion

Summary and Reflection

For this discussion, carefully reflect upon what you’ve learned both in this class and in your elective concentration. Many of you may be taking this class as a capstone for the management or leadership concentration so think about how this class builds upon prior classes that you’ve taken.

More specifically, answer the following questions in your first post:

1. What concepts from this class did you find the most useful or most likely to use for your career?

2. What concepts from prior management or leadership classes did this class reinforce the most?

After responding to the Reflective Discussion questions above, please complete an anonymous Course Evaluation Survey. Instructors are not able to view course evaluation reports until after the grade submission period is over. Thank you for your feedback.

Module 1 – Case

ACTION RESEARCH AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Case Assignment

For this assignment, first carefully review the required background materials. Make sure you are highly familiar with the main steps involved in action research and organizational development discussed in the readings. When you are finished reviewing the background materials, take a close look at the four scenarios below.

For each scenario below, think about the reasons why things did not work out well for the company in question. More specifically, think about which standard action research or organizational development step was not taken.

Your task for this assignment is not to explain what steps the organization should take—you would need to go into the company and do some lengthy action research in order to do this! Instead just review the standard action research and organizational development steps covered in the background materials and try to assess which key step was missing in the scenarios below.

Then write a 4- to 5-page paper addressing the following for each scenario:

A. What action research or organizational step was missing and

B. Why missing this step might have led to failure.

Make sure to discuss at least one of the required readings in your discussion of each scenario, and to cite all three of the required readings in your paper.

1. Sales have gone down at the XYZ Widget Corporation and nobody in the organization, including the CEO, seems to know why. They decide to hire an organizational development consultant to do some action research. The consultant and the CEO spend a lot of time discussing how to proceed and create a contract. The contract specifies that the consultant will limit his scope to finding factors that led to the decrease in sales and he will come up with a plan of action within one month. The consultant is busy with several other clients and doesn’t get much time to spend at XYZ. Facing the one month deadline, the consultant decides to repeat a recommendation he gave to several previous clients. The consultant then writes up a report recommending a large pay increase for the sales staff, which worked well for his previous clients. This change is carefully planned, and is implemented with strong support and enthusiasm from the sales staff. However, six months later sales are still down.

2. The Allmart Corporation is very concerned about the poor functioning of their inventory control and accounting processes. They hire a consultant who is an expert in this area who makes a good impression on them during the interview, and they immediately put him to work the day after the interview. The consultant conducts a survey with all employees in the accounting department and also has in-depth interviews with all managers in the department. The consultant shares his findings with Allmart’s top management team, and makes the primary recommendation that they implement a newer and more expensive accounting software package as he believes it is out of date software that is leading to inefficiencies in the department. Allmart’s CEO gets extremely upset that the client relied only on interviews and surveys and did not spend time directly observing the department’s accounting practices in action. Allmart ignores the consultant’s advice, and decides to hire a new consultant instead.

3. The Kooltrendy Internet software company has recently purchased Hardwrk, a competing Internet software company. Kooltrendy wants the merger to go through as smoothly as possible with minimal conflicts between employees of the two companies, so they have hired an organizational development consultant to look at ways to help ease this transition for all employees.

Kooltrendy interviews several consultants, but settles on one consultant who has a lot of experience with these types of mergers. After extensive discussions, it is agreed that the consultant will conduct extensive one-on-one interviews with employees as well as a large-scale survey that assesses employee values and attitudes. After carefully reviewing the survey and interview data, the consultant concludes that Kooltrendy has a very fun and laid-back corporate culture, whereas Hardwrk has a more competitive and serious corporate culture.

Satisfied that it knows how to fix the problem after hearing the consultant’s report, Kooltrendy immediately decides to implement “Fun Fridays” for Hardwrk employees that involve water gun fights, costume contests, or other activities every Friday in order to bring Hardwrk’s culture more in line with the laid-back culture of Kooltrendy. However, they are puzzled to see that every Friday more and more Hardwrk employees quit and they are unsure why the “Fun Fridays” solution did not work.

4. HN Motors is a large manufacturer of both cars and motorcycles. Given the new demand for high mileage vehicles, the company has decided to develop a car/motorcycle hybrid that has three wheels and looks like a tiny race car. However, neither the car department nor the motorcycle department wants to take the lead and the project keeps getting stalled.

HN Motors decides to hire a consultant to mediate the differences between the car and motorcycle departments, with the agreement that the consultant will spend a lot of time with both departments to get to the bottom of why they are so resistant to working on the new vehicle. During interviews with both departments, the consultant finds that all employees think the new hybrid vehicle is a good idea but they hate the idea of having “two bosses” and none of them wants to be in the position of having to report to both the director of the motorcycle department and the director of the car department.

The consultant recommends that HN Motors create a new “Hybrid Department” that only focuses on the new hybrid vehicle, and that this new department bring in a mix of employees from both the car and motorcycle department as well as some new employees.

HN Motors’ management likes this recommendation and pay the consultant, but say that they can take it from here and don’t need the consultant’s services anymore. A few months later the project is still stalled and they don’t know why. They call up the consultant to try to get him to come back, but by now he is busy working with other clients.

Module 1 – SLP

ACTION RESEARCH AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

For the Session Long Project in this class, you will be applying the principles of organizational development to an organization you currently work for or have worked for in the past. For this first SLP, think carefully about the background readings and how they might apply to a specific organizational situation or problem that you have experienced firsthand. Then write a 2- to 3-page paper answering the following questions:

1. What do you think the biggest problem your current organization or one of the previous organizations you worked for faces? Why do you think management has had difficulty with this problem?

2. Do you think this problem could be mitigated by hiring an organizational development consultant based on what you’ve read in the background materials? Why or why not? Make sure to cite some of the readings in your answer.

3. Of the action research and organizational development steps listed in the required readings, which ones do you think would be the more challenging steps that an organizational development consultant would face coming into your organization? Explain your reasoning and cite at least one of the required background readings.

SLP Assignment Expectations

• Answer the assignment questions directly.

• Stay focused on the precise assignment questions; don’t go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials.

First and foremost, remember to go very carefully through all of the required materials before starting this assignment. There are two short videos and two short articles, plus two in-depth book chapters to go through. There are also some optional readings in the background materials that you can use for your paper. It is important to make sure you understand the ins and outs of Open Space Technology and Future Search before starting on this assignment, so make sure to go through the readings and videos carefully before you start on this paper.

For this assignment, you will be going through four scenarios. For each scenario, cite at least two of the readings from the background readings to support your answer. You need to cite at least four of the readings total for your paper—these can include both required and optional readings listed in the background materials. Your paper should be 4–5 pages in length:

Suppose you win the lottery. Not sure what to do with all of your money, on an impulse you decide to buy a local college as you want to make a positive impact in your community. However, you soon find yourself a bit over your head as all day you have employees or students coming to your office with all kinds of advice, suggestions for changes that should be made, complaints, etc. Never having run a college before, you are a bit confused about how to deal with all of this input and you don’t really have a good idea about what to focus on. The college has about 300 employees and 800 students and want to find a way to get some more organized input and creative ideas for improving the college. Should you use Open Space Technology, Future Search, or neither? Explain your reasoning and justify your answer using at least two of the readings from the background materials.

A video game company starts out with five undergraduate students living in a dorm, but rapidly grows within three years to around 50 employees and $10 million a year in annual revenues. While the company is still expected rapid growth, there is still sharp tension between the very young video game designers and the older and more experienced executives who run the finance and marketing departments. In particular, the younger employees strive to develop new video games that are unique and much different than any other games available. However, the more experienced executives wish to take a more conservative route and come out with games that are similar to popular games produced by their competitors. The five founding partners are not sure which of these two directions to take and wish to receive input from all of their employees through some type of formal process. Should the CEO use Open Space Technology, Future Search, or neither? Explain your reasoning and justify your answer using at least two of the readings from the background materials.

An insurance company has most of its employees in three different departments – sales, accounting, and information technology. The CEO is always receiving input from the sales department, as most of the salesforce is very outgoing and they don’t hesitate to give their opinions or make requests. On the other hand, employees in accounting and information technology tend to be quiet and shy and rarely speak up. The CEO notices that there is considerably higher turnover in the accounting and information technology departments, and thus becomes concerned that perhaps employees in these departments are leaving because they are dissatisfied with decisions the CEO has made or because they feel the salesforce is overly favored. There are about 50 employees in each department. The CEO wishes to find a process by which a wider range of employee input can be obtained. Should the CEO use Open Space Technology, Future Search, or neither? Explain your reasoning and justify your answer using at least two of the readings from the background materials.

A CEO initiates an Open Space Technology conference. At the start of the conference, the CEO provides a list of topics he wants covered and also gives his opinion on what kind of outcomes he wants from the conference. He also makes attendance at the conference mandatory. When the conference starts, participants all volunteer to give sessions on the topics proposed by the CEO. A few participants propose to give sessions on other topics not mentioned by the CEO, but very few employees come to these sessions and instead go to the sessions covering topics suggested by the CEO. At the end of the conference, the CEO is presented with a carefully worded summary of the conference and given conclusions that the CEO wanted to hear. However, after the conference ends and employees go back to work they are very slow at implementing the recommendations from the conference. What do you think went wrong? Which major principles or concepts of Open Space Technology do you think the CEO violated? Explain your reasoning, and cite Leith (1996) and at least one other source on Open Space Technology to support your answer.

LARGE GROUP INTERVENTIONS

For this assignment, continue to write about the current organization you work for or one that you worked for in the past. Before writing this paper, make sure to thoroughly review the background readings. Think carefully about how Open Space Technology and Future Search could be used at your organization. Then write a 3-page paper addressing the following questions. Make sure to cite at least three of the required readings in your paper:

What issue facing your organization would be most appropriately addressed using Future Search? Explain the issue and why Future Search could effectively address this issue.

If you organized a Future Search Conference to address the issue identified in Question 1 above, who would you include in the initial planning before the conference? Who you invite to the conference? How many people would you invite, and why? Any other specifics planning details that you would address to ensure the success of the conference?

What issue facing your organization would be most appropriately addressed using Open Space Technology? This should be a different issue than the one you discussion in Question 1. Explain the issue and why Open Space Technology could effectively address this issue.

If you organized an Open Space Technology Event to address the issue identified in Question 3 above, who would you include in the initial planning before the conference? Who you invite to the conference? How many total people would you invite, and why? Any other specifics planning details that you would address to ensure the success of the event?

Module 3 – Case

JOB REDESIGN

Case Assignment

In the background materials you had a chance to view some videos and read about the traditional “top down” approach of job redesign as well as the newer “bottom up” approach of job crafting. Before starting on this assignment, make sure you have thoroughly reviewed the videos and readings and understand the key job redesign and job crafting strategies. Once you have finished reviewing the background materials, apply what you’ve learned to the specific scenarios and questions below. Make sure to cite at least one of the required readings for each answer, and try to cite at least four of the readings or videos in your answer. Your paper should be 4–5 pages in length:

1. Relax Lines, Inc. is a luxury cruise line that has hired you as a job crafting consultant for two groups of their employees. The first group is the ship crew. The crew have responsibility for safety, navigation, and maintenance of the ship. The second group is the hospitality staff. The hospitality staff is tasked with making sure the passengers are enjoying themselves and are properly entertained with various events that this staff plans and prepares. Before arriving at the cruise line to do interviews and make recommendations, you first need to do some reading on what general approach you will use. As a first step, review Dik and Duffy (2012), where they discuss task crafting, relational crafting, and cognitive crafting. Which of these three types of job crafting do you think would be most appropriate for the ship crew, and which one do you think would be most appropriate for the hospitality staff? Also, read up on “job-crafting swap meets” in Wrzesniewski (2014). Do you think a swap meet would be appropriate for either ship crew members or hospitality staff? Any other strategy from Wrzesniewski (2014) that you think would be useful for either pilots or online marketers?

2. The ABC Corporation has a team of telemarketers. The job description for the telemarketers is pretty basic: They call up potential customers who have visited his company’s web page and requested information about the product. Telemarketers’ performance evaluations depend mostly on their monthly sales as well as customer satisfaction surveys, and they receive monthly feedback reports. Their supervisor gives them some initial training, but these telemarketers have a lot of freedom to choose how and when to call customers. For example, they are free to customize their own sales pitch as long as they don’t mislead potential customers. Also, they are not required to fill out a time card or work at the office (they can work from home, if they want). As long as they are making enough monthly sales they are free to set their own schedules. While the telemarketing team is performing well, the company is concerned about high turnover among telemarketers and wants to do some job enrichment. Which of the five core job dimensions discussed in Bauer and Erdogan (2012) or page 9 of Griffin (2007) do you think should be revised the most during a job redesign intervention? Which ones do you think do not need to be revised? Explain your reasoning and cite some of the required readings in your answer.

3. Suppose a sports injury clinic has three main practitioners. First, there is a general practitioner doctor who does the basic diagnosis of the injury and works with the patient to come up with an overall treatment program. This doctor also prescribes medicine as needed. Then there is a surgeon who specializes in sports injuries. This doctor only does surgery. Finally, there is a physical therapist who helps patients with exercise programs to help them recover. The owner of the clinic though becomes worried that these three practitioners are becoming bored and dissatisfied with their jobs and there is concern they might all leave unless their jobs change. However, given the high degree of training required for each of their specializations management is not sure how to go about making their jobs less monotonous and more rewarding. In general, would you recommend management undergoes a traditional job redesign approach or a job crafting approach? Which specific job redesign strategy or job crafting strategy would you recommend? For example, if you choose job redesign discuss whether you would recommend job rotation, enlargement, enrichment, etc. If you choose job crafting, refer to one of the specific strategies or interventions discussed in Wrzesniewski (2014) or Dik and Duffy (2012).

4. Create a table with the definitions of the three main types of job redesign (job enlargement, job rotation, job enrichment) and the three main types of job crafting (task crafting, relational crafting, and cognitive crafting). Then write two paragraphs explaining which of the three types of job crafting are most similar to any of the three types of job redesign, and on what you think are the key differences between job crafting and job redesign based on the definitions in your table.

Module 3 – SLP

JOB REDESIGN

As with the Case Assignment, make sure you have thoroughly reviewed the background readings and understand the key concepts of job redesign and job crafting. Then think about your own job and workplace and how these concepts apply to your own work life. Once you have finished reviewing the background readings and have carefully thought about how these concepts relate to your own job, write a 2- to 3-page paper answering the following questions:

1. Of the three main types of job redesign (job enlargement, job rotation, job enrichment), which one do you think would be the most effective in your current workplace? Explain your reasoning, and cite Bauer and Erdogan (2012) or Griffin (2007) as part of your answer.

2. Suppose your supervisor decides to use job enrichment to redesign your job. Of the five core job characteristics discussed in Bauer and Erdogan (2012) or page 9 of Griffin (2007), which one do you think should be changed as part of your job redesign?

3. Which specific job crafting strategy or intervention do you think would be most effective at your organization or for your specific job? Refer to one of the specific strategies or interventions discussed in Wrzesniewski (2014) or Dik and Duffy (2012).

Module 4 Case

APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY

Case Assignment

For this assignment, first carefully review the required background materials. Make sure you remember the standard organizational development approaches covered in Module 1. Then make sure you understand the main principles of Appreciative Inquiry and how they compare to traditional organizational development approaches (action research, problem solving). It is also important to understand what is involved in each of the “4 Ds” – Discovery, Dream, Design, and Destiny.

When you are finished reviewing the background materials, go through each of the scenarios below and apply what you’ve read to these scenarios. For each scenario, cite at least one of the required readings to support your answer. You should cite at least three of the four required readings in your paper. Your paper should be 4–5 pages in length:

1. A corporation notices that suddenly turnover in the human resource department has been extremely high. This corporations prides itself on having a dedicated and committed workforce, so this high turnover in one department is highly troubling for this company. Normally the human resource department investigates when there is a high turnover rate in a department. But since the human resource department is now the department with the high turnover rate, the CEO decides that an outside consultant should be hired to investigate the high turnover rate and propose solutions. Should this team use an Appreciative Inquiry consultant, or hire a more traditional Organizational Development consultant? Explain your reasoning with references to the required readings.

2. An organization hires an Appreciative Inquiry consultant to help the company get back on track and improve the performance of its product design team. The consultant starts by asking members of the team how they would like the team to perform and what their ideal vision of the team would be. The consultant collects all of this input and designs a detailed plan regarding how to achieve this ideal future that the team dreams about. However, once this detailed plan is presented to the team they are all shocked that the consultant came up with such an unrealistic plan. Team members say that the expenses involved in this plan are far beyond their budget, and they would also need to hire many new team members in order to achieve this plan in a realistic time frame. They all agree it would be great if they had the time and money to implement this plan, but they also are in consensus that this plan presented by the consultant is highly unrealistic. What do you think went wrong? What steps do you think the Appreciative Inquiry consultant could have taken to make the consulting process go better? Refer to the specific “4 Ds” of Appreciative Inquiry in your answer.

3. A group of ten friends decide to start a new social networking company and put their savings together to start this new business. The company grows rapidly for the first five years and morale is very high in the company during this time. Everyone gets along very well and they work together cooperatively in order to continuously improve the company and its services. However, after five years the company stops growing and seems to reach a plateau. Morale seems to drop and there is now noticeable tension between employees including the top leadership team. They are not sure what to do revive the company, so they decide to hire a consultant. Should this team use an Appreciative Inquiry approach or a more traditional organizational development approach? Explain your reasoning with references to the required readings.

4. A large supermarket chain decides they would like to expand to have an online division where consumers can order online and have their groceries delivered directly to their homes. The supermarket decides to create a special taskforce to come up with a detailed plan on how they should develop and manage the new online division. This taskforce includes a diverse variety of employees including those from the marketing department, accounting department, inventory department, and most of the main departments. These employees do not have much experience working with each other since they are from different departments. After meeting regularly for a few months, the taskforce makes almost no progress and are constantly bickering. Management is concerned that the online division will never get off the ground. To get back on track and find a way to function more smoothly, should this taskforce use an Appreciative Inquiry approach or a more traditional organizational development approach? Explain your reasoning with references to the required readings.

Module 4 SLP

APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY

For this assignment, think about a team you currently work with or have worked with in the past and how well this team has functioned. Think about both the positives and the negatives, and how the material from the background readings applies to what you’ve experienced. Then write a 2- to 3-page paper answering the following three questions below. Make sure to cite at least one of the required readings for each of your answers, and to cite at least two of the required readings in your paper:

1. What are some of the key positive aspects of this team? Discuss some specific positives and include some stories of times when the team functioned especially well. Do you think these stories could work in an Appreciative Inquiry approach to come up with a plan to improve the performance of the team?

2. How is the effectiveness or performance of this team usually measured? Could a traditional organizational development approach help identify problems in this team as well as find ways in which team performance could be improved?

3. Overall, do you think an Appreciative Inquiry or a traditional organizational development would be better for this team? If your team was to hire a consultant, what type of approach would you want the consultant to take?

Read the following papers and analysis of Dell by IDC. Discuss how Dell is showing a 513% Return on
Investment for its flash storage and why this is important globally. Since cloud storage is an intangible asset,
how do you think this affects Dell’s global portfolio? (Note
that Dell became a private company in late 2013; therefore, it no longer
reports to the SEC.)

BTN 7-8 (Global Decision) The
five regional segments are Korea, China, America, Europe and finally Asia.

Samsung does have a dominant
regional segment, which is Korea. The footnote shows that Korea brought the
most revenue to Samsung.

This information is important
because it shows investors and the company itself where its main market is and
which segment Samsung has to focus on, to receive more revenue. (As posted in

CASE 7-1 The Greater Providence Deposit & Trust Embezzlement

CASE 7-1 The Greater Providence Deposit & Trust Embezzlement
Nino Moscardi, president of Greater Providence Deposit & Trust (GPD&T), received an anonymous note in his mail stating that a bank employee was making bogus loans. Moscardi asked the bank’s internal auditors to investigate the transactions detailed in the note. The investigation led to James Guisti, manager of a North Providence branch office and a trusted 14-year employee who had once worked as one of the bank’s internal auditors. Guisti was charged with embezzling $1.83 million from the bank using 67 phony loans taken out over a three-year period.
Court documents revealed that the bogus loans were 90-day notes requiring no collateral and ranging in amount from $10,000 to $63,500. Guisti originated the loans; when each one matured, he would take out a new loan, or rewrite the old one, to pay the principal and interest due. Some loans had been rewritten five or six times.
The 67 loans were taken out by Guisti in five names, including his wife’s maiden name, his father’s name, and the names of two friends. These people denied receiving stolen funds or knowing anything about the embezzlement. The fifth name was James Vanesse, who police said did not exist. The Social Security number on Vanesse’s loan application was issued to a female, and the phone number belonged to a North Providence auto dealer.
Lucy Fraioli, a customer service representative who cosigned the checks, said Guisti was her supervisor and she thought nothing was wrong with the checks, though she did not know any of the people. Marcia Perfetto, head teller, told police she cashed checks for Guisti made out to four of the five persons. Asked whether she gave the money to Guisti when he gave her checks to cash, she answered, “Not all of the time,” though she could not recall ever having given the money directly to any of the four, whom she did not know.
Guisti was authorized to make consumer loans up to a certain dollar limit without loan committee approvals, which is a standard industry practice. Guisti’s original lending limit was $10,000, the amount of his first fraudulent loan. The dollar limit was later increased to $15,000 and then increased again to $25,000. Some of the loans, including the one for $63,500, far exceeded his lending limit. In addition, all loan applications should have been accompanied by the applicant’s credit history report, purchased from an independent credit rating firm. The loan taken out in the fictitious name would not have had a credit report and should have been flagged by a loan review clerk at the bank’s headquarters.
News reports raised questions about why the fraud was not detected earlier. State regulators and the bank’s internal auditors failed to detect the fraud. Several reasons were given for the failure to find the fraud earlier. First, in checking for bad loans, bank auditors do not examine all loans and generally focus on loans much larger than the ones in question. Second, Greater Providence had recently dropped its computer services arrangement with a local bank in favor of an out-of-state bank. This changeover may have reduced the effectiveness of the bank’s control procedures. Third, the bank’s loan review clerks were rotated frequently, making follow-up on questionable loans more difficult.
Guisti was a frequent gambler and used the embezzled money to pay gambling debts. The bank’s losses totaled $624,000, which was less than the $1.83 million in bogus loans, because Guisti used a portion of the borrowed money to repay loans as they came due. The bank’s bonding company covered the loss.
The bank experienced other adverse publicity prior to the fraud’s discovery. First, the bank was fined $50,000 after pleading guilty to failure to report cash transactions exceeding $10,000, which is a felony. Second, bank owners took the bank private after a lengthy public battle with the State Attorney General, who alleged that the bank inflated its assets and overestimated its capital surplus to make its balance sheet look stronger. The bank denied this charge.
• 1. How did Guisti commit the fraud, conceal it, and convert the fraudulent actions to personal gain?

Select and share your Persuasive Research Essay Topic

All I need by this Wednesday is just the thesis statement. The essay isn't due until next week. Did you see the list of topics?

Select and share your Persuasive Research Essay Topic (see topics list in Week 6 - Assignments sheet). Briefly discuss why you chose this topic.
Develop and share the thesis statement of your Persuasive Research Essay (remember it must make an arguable claim about your topic), which is due at the end of Week 6.
Here's a great video reviewing how to write a strong thesis:
Topics List:

Legalization of Marijuana

Affirmative Action (college or workplace)

Cameras/Surveillance in Nursing Homes

Diet Supplements (should the FDA regulate them harder than the current policy)

Genetic interference/gene manipulation

Dress Codes in Schools

Foreign language – proving whether or not a foreign language should be required of US students from early age.

Nationalized Heatlhcare vs. Privatized Healthcare

Legal Drinking Age

Minimum Wage

Sex Education in Schools

Year Round School

Education: Online Education vs. Traditional Classroom

Hate crimes (what is a hate speech vs free speech) what is the line?

Regardless of the topic you choose, you should focus on creating an interesting introduction containing a narrow, clear, and arguable thesis; writing a clearly organized body with logical support and external sources for your assertions; a conclusion that makes a reasonable and persuasive point.

Length Requirement:

600 - 750 words, as counted by Microsoft Word on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen, not including the Works Cited (Careful editing is an important part of the writing process. Be sure that your essay does not exceed 750 words).

Diction Requirements:

This is a formal paper. The personal pronouns “I” and “You” in all their forms are not allowed. Contractions not are allowed. Adhere strictly to proper grammar and mechanics.

The paper MUST be created in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format.

Under NO circumstances should you submit this paper in Works (.wps format) or Wordpad (.wpd format). If you do not have Microsoft Word, download OpenOffice from OpenOffice.org and use it: the program is free (can’t beat that price!), and it has a facility to save in the .doc format. (It also gives you a spreadsheet that is compatible with Excel and a presentation program that is compatible with PowerPoint.) Or, you can choose to prepare your essay in Works or Wordpad and save it as a rich text file (.rtf).

Source Requirement:

This paper requires at least THREE separate sources. Wikipedia, quotation databases, or various dictionaries CANNOT be used as a source. See the handout What is MLA?, under Course Documents & Resources for discussion of appropriate sources.

A Works Cited page is required. It must have at least THREE separate sources listed on it.

All sources quoted, paraphrased, or summarized must be cited in the new MLA style. An explanation of the MLA documentation style is found in the handout in Course Documents & Resources called “Updated MLA Style of Documentation”.

In-text citations must be indicated by the proper combination of signal phrases and parenthetical references. They must clearly point to a unique and readily identifiable entry on the Works Cited page. See our relevant course materials regarding parentheticals/in-text citations.

Works Cited entries must conform to MLA style. See our relevant course materials regarding reference pages and reference entries.

necessary to preserve the program?

How is Medicare funded now? Why do elderly people feel
that Medicare is an insurance program and not a welfare program? Is this

Should there be a Medicare program at all? Why should the
government be involved in providing insurance to elderly preople? Does Medicare
have detrimental effects on the market for healthcare or on the market for

HSM 544 Week 7 Course Project

Course Project – Guide

Requirements:

Write a research paper (not less than 18 pages or more
than 22 pages) double spaced based on your chosen subject, in which you convince
your readers to support your recommendation.

Introductory material:

Cover letter or memo, title page, table of contents,
executive summary:

Body of the report:

Introduction, conclusions, recommendations, findings, and
methodology, organized clearly with effective headings and subheadings:

Supplementary information: Appendixes, exhibits
(supplementary charts and graphs) and a list of illustrations, if appropriate.

Use Applied Business Research Techniques:

Guide your approach to solving the business problem and
use tools such as the Internet, Keller’s Virtual Library, and other on-line and
in-library resources to conduct business research to gather information and
support for your proposal. Go to http://www.google.com for a good research
engine.

Using Keller’s Virtual Library:

Log on to http://library.devry.edu/ through your Internet
Service Provider (ISP) and browsers (such as Netscape or Microsoft Internet
Explorer), click on Graduate Resources and follow the instructions on the page.

Follow the simple on-line instructions to conduct your
information search. The home page has an easy-to-use Help Guide that provides
an overview of the database and answers to specific questions about usage.

Tips for Success

Getting started:. Good communication begins with critical
thought. Think about the chosen subject.

-Who is your audience?

-What is your purpose?

-What do you know about the situation?

Let your answers to those three (3) questions guide you
as you research your topic, acquire information, and develop your business
recommendation. You may also use the answers to those three (3) questions to
guide you as you outline your subject. Don’t use information just because you
have it, use information because it will help you accomplish your objective.

GRADING CRITERIA FOR TERM PAPER:

The greatest value in a course comes from applying the
concepts, theories, and principles explored during class. The term paper will
be graded according to the criteria below and is worth 21% or your total grade.
This term project gives you an opportunity to select an a problem or situation
with which you are familiar and identify a health care management issue in which
an element of that organization is or is not meeting expectations. Then,
drawing on the concepts and principles from readings, exercises, current
events, and class discussions, write a term paper in which you:

• Introduce the issue (Background)

• Define the problem,

• Search the literature,

• Analyze the problem,

• Offer possible solutions,

• Propose a single solution,

• Develop an implementation plan, and

• Justify why/how it your solution will solve the
identified problem.

Your paper must include, but is not limited to, the
following sections:

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: (20 points)

Once your paper is completed, you will need to summarize
the paper’s main points for your reader. Explain succinctly the problem/issue
you are writing about along with a summary of your paper’s main points. Include
the solutions offered along with your identified best solution and plan and how
it will solve the identified problem/issue. Maximum Length of an Executive
Summary is 1-2 pages.

DEFINE THE PROBLEM/ISSUE: (10 points)

Identify and clearly state the problem which needs
improvement or is not meeting expectations. Remember, that what appears to be
the health care problem or issue may actually be just a symptom of a bigger
problem–dig deep to be sure you’ve identified the real problem/s. If there
appears to be more than one problem/issue, decide if they are separate or
related issues. State the problem in the form of a question.

LITERATURE REVIEW: (45 points)

Present what you discovered in your search of the
literature. Review theories, concepts, and studies discussed in class and in
our textbook AND review what other writers/researchers have to say about the
subject of your analysis. In short, demonstrate an understanding of the
literature and apply it sensibly to the problem. This is not a course in
applied commonsense; however, such practical intelligence is important,
especially in the application stage. A literature review is like playing a
video game in which you are in a chamber with many doors. As you open each
door, you uncover clues to help you progress to the next level. Similarly, in a
literature review, your objective is to open the “doors” that can point the way
to solving your business problem. Begin your literature review with a broad
look at your field of interest, then narrow your focus until you zero in on the
essential issues/s of concern.

NOTE: A literature review is a required element of this
assignment. A good “rule of thumb” is to review at least ten
resources, beyond the textbook and class readings, to ensure the effectiveness
of your research. Be sure to list them in the bibliography.

Suggestion: Begin your literature survey by accessing
Keller”s online library at www.keller.edu.

PROBLEM ANALYSIS: (45 points) This section should provide
a detailed analysis of the causes of the problem(s) or issue(s) you identified
in Section II. A major objective is to clearly illustrate how you are using
this course concepts (as well as what your learned from your literature review)
to better understand the causes of the problem(s) or issue(s). Show that you
are applying course material!

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: (25 points)

Explore three solutions that could be appropriate ways to
solve the identified problem/issue. Be sure these solutions are logical based
on your analysis and that they each would effectively treat the problem, not
the symptoms. Also, discuss the anticipated outcomes (both positive and
negative) of implementing each of the possible solutions you identified.

SOLUTION AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION: (25 points)

Outline your recommended solution to the
problem/issue—one of the alternatives explored in Section V or a combination of
those alternatives. State your solution clearly and specifically. Describe
exactly what should be done and how it should be done, including by whom, with
whom, and in what sequence. Here are some points to keep in mind as you write
this section: Have I indicated an awareness of the problem of implementation
(the how aspect)? Have I been specific enough? A specific solution would state
what style is most appropriate for the situation and how you will attempt to
the have the manager realize the appropriate style.

What aspects of the problem remain unresolved by my
solution?

Does my recommended solution and implementation plan
address the problem/issues and causes identified in the previous sections? Does
my solution consider and resolve the identified pros and cons?

How will I evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented
recommended solution?

What process checks or procedures will I put in place to
institutionalize the improvement?

Could my solution cause other problems/issues? What risks
are inherent in the solution you recommend? What contingency plans do you
recommend?

Assess the realism of your proposed action plan. For
example, is there adequate time, money, or other resources for your solution?
In addition, does your solution place too much reliance on other people being
“reasonable”—i.e., on what YOU think is reasonable?

JUSTIFICATION: (20 points)

Justify why your recommended solution and its
implementation will solve the identified problem/issue in the organization/unit
you selected. An important element of this section is to show very clearly how
you applied course concepts to arrive at a workable solution and a successful
implementation. Apply appropriate course material; support your conclusions
with appropriately referenced facts, quotes, and readings; and be sure your
justification addresses identified pros and cons.

REFERENCES: (20 points)

All citations in the paper must appear in the reference
list, and all references must be cited in the text. Choose references
judiciously and cite them accurately. A citation of an author’s work in the
text documents your work, briefly identifies the source for readers, and
enables readers to locate the source of information in the alphabetical
reference list at the end of the paper. To use the ideas or words of another
without crediting the source is plagiarism. Plagiarism in its purest form
involves copying of entire passages either verbatim or nearly verbatim, with no
direct acknowledgment of the source. The most common (and unconscious) form of
plagiarism is when a direct quotation is simply paraphrased. Paraphrasing does
not relieve you of the obligation to provide proper identification of source
data. The best way to avoid plagiarism is to make sure all quotes, ideas, or
conclusions not your own are given proper acknowledgment in your text.

GRAMMAR/COMPOSITION: (20 points) The paper uses
acceptable terminology in standard English and reflects the use of word
processing software and spell check. Acceptable sentence structure is reflected
with appropriate use of grammar and style and considerate of the audience for
which the paper is written.

HUM 410 Academic Success: Strengthening Scholarly Writing

Module 1 Assignment

Assignment (2 parts)

Part 1: Now that you have your chosen topic for this course, write at least three paragraphs that explore the questions on your topic answering such items as Who? Which aspects? Where? When? How? and Why you have selected this topic. You are attempting to narrow down your topic. (Place this section into a Word or PDF document)

Part 2: After narrowing down your topic above, choose an Invention Strategy (clustering, listing, freewriting, or outlining) to brainstorm the subject you narrowed down.

Complete the Invention Strategy you choose and attach your strategy work either in the same document of part 1 or submit as a separate file

Answer these questions in a well-developed paragraph: State which strategy you chose, and why. Then, discuss how the strategy worked for you and if you will use it again in the future (place into the Part 1 document labeled Part 2).

Module 2 Assignment

Create the “shell” of your synthesis paper in APA format. Create your title page with proper running head, title/author section and page numbers, as well as add the Abstract section heading starting on page 2, and then the main essay sections start on page 3. The main essay section should start with the introduction heading which is the title of the paper again on page 3 (centered on line 1, not bold), followed by the level one subheadings (bold and centered): Literature Review, Discussion, Conclusion. Then heading for References starting on following page (line 1 – not bolded), and heading for Annotated Bibliography on the following page after References (line 1 – not bolded). You are not actually writing any of the essay this week, so no text is needed, but you will be setting up a document where you can add your text in future modules.

Module 3 Assignment

Professional Development Assignment Description:

There are 4 parts to the assignment. Please place all four assignments into one paper. The different parts should be clearly marked so your professor knows which question you are addressing.

Rewrite the following essays. Correct all errors in capitalization, spelling, and punctuation. Divide the passage into appropriate paragraphs.

Essay #1:

When my husband Joe had cancer surgery five years ago, each of his family members responded just as I knew they would. John, his father, decided to organize the family’s calls. Because, of course, everything would run so much more smoothly. Thus Jane, Matt, and Jim received detailed sheets of instructions in the mail. Telling them which days to telephone r.j. smith hospital to talk to Joe and what presents to send. Jane, enraged, promptly threw a tantrum. Calling Matt and me to complain about her father’s overbearing behavior. “I,” she yelled, “am a Psychiatrist who knows how to handle these situations, i am not still a child.” Matt also responded predictably. By avoiding the situation. He threw himself into his work. Normally a late sleeper, Matt took to leaving at 5:00 a.m., driving on the deserted expressway and arriving at work before six a.m. In addition, he didn’t return until 11:00 p.m. When he would fall into bed so exhausted that he couldn’t worry about Joe. Jim, too, responded predictably. He fumed inside for weeks, ignored John’s instructions, and sent cartons of books to Joe. So that he would never be bored. The books were funny. Because Jim had read Norman Cousins’ book about the healing power of laughter. Within a few months, Joe recovered from the surgery-in spite of his family

Essay #2:

Treatment of atrial septal defect depends upon the size and symptoms and therefore is individualized an atrial septal defect of less than 3mm usually closes spontaneously (The Merck Manual, 2006). When the defect is between 3mm and 8mm it closes spontaneously in eighty percent of cases by the age of eighteen months, however, atrial septal defects located in the anteroinferior aspect of the septum (ostiumprimum) or in the posterior aspect of the septum near the superior vena cava or inferior vena cava (sinus venosus) don’t close spontaneously. If the defect is very small does not close spontaneously and the patient is asymptomatic. The treatment may be simply too monitor via an annual echocardiogram. Of course their is a risk of patients’ becoming symptomatic.

Moderate-sized atrial septal defects or larger or patients’ who are symptomatic require closure of the shunt this is usually done between the ages of 2 and 6 years. A catheter-delivered closure device, such as AmplatzerSeptalOccluder or Cardio-Seal device.May be used for closure of atrial septal defects less than 13mm in size, except than primum or sinus venosus defects. If the defect is greater than thirteen milimeters or located near important structures. Surgical repair becomes necessary. If the atrial septal defect is repaired during childhood there mortality rates approach 0 and the patient’s life expectancy approaches that of the general population prior to surgical repair, patients may need to be treated with diuretics; digoxin; ACE inhibitor; or beta blockers to prevent congestive heart failure (Moser &Riegel, 2007). Following surgical repair patience will receive aspirin to prevent clots, and be monitored closely for dysrhythmias and pulmonary hypertension. Oxygen and nitric oxide therapy have proven to be beneficial in treating postoperative pulmonary hypertension. Also patients who have primum atrial septal defect will need endocarditis prophylaxis.

Guided writing exercise:

Think about a recent experience you have had that required you to use critical thinking skills. Set a timer for five minutes. Write about your experience. Do not worry about grammar, punctuation, or spelling. Just write, but stop at five minutes. Now go back and write your experience with correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Submit both written pieces. Add a concluding paragraph that answers the follows questions: How was the formal writing experience different from the timed writing experience? What did you do differently? Was there any difference in the time it took you? How did you ensure your spelling, grammar, and punctuation were correct?

Describe when the following words would be used in a scholarly essay (define each word). Then, use those that are appropriate to a scholarly essay in a sentence.

Their, there, they’re

Affect, effect

Its, it’s

your, you’re

then, than

accept, except

Describe the use of apostrophes in writing in general. When should apostrophes be used in formal writing? When should apostrophes be avoided in formal writing?

Module 6 Assignment

Professional Development Assignment Description: (please make any and all corrections that are needed based on your professor’s comments from the last submission)

Prepare the Literature Review section of your paper. Begin with an introductory paragraph that describes your search parameters and what databases were used. Be sure to avoid first person (I, we, me, us, etc.). Include at least one paragraph for each of your sources chosen in your Annotated Bibliography. This is not a repeat of the annotations in the annotated bibliography, but should be written as an essay that flows easily from one point to the next. Remember, your literature review should be at least seven paragraphs, but not more than twelve paragraphs. Each paragraph should be at least three sentences in length, but only contain one or two main points and support. Review your APA resources for how to properly cite references in your text. This is where you will apply in-text citation rules, as each paragraph will indicate the reference from which the information is taken.

Also prepare your reference page. Please review your APA resources as mentioned previously. Submit the entire document. However, only the literature review and reference page will be graded in this module.

Module 02 Project Assignment – Getting Started

Part 1 – Getting Started

Balancing School and Life – My Quality of Life Self-Care Plan. The purpose of developing this Plan is to set a framework and a plan to maintain wellness and to stay motivated and engaged throughout your Program. Doing this will help you achieve success during your coursework and as a professional nurse.

The goal of the Project is to help you become self-aware and reflective as a means of identifying personal self-care strategies that will increase your energy and help you manage your stress. The Project will give you a chance to learn how this is accomplished as you will be doing similar work with clients during the Program and as a professional nurse to assist them in the same way.

Use the Quality of Life Self-Care Wheel to assess your current state. After you determine your scores, in a 2-3 page paper complete the following:

Discuss those areas that are strengths (higher scores) and those areas that need further development (lower scores).

Identify two strategies you can use to maintain or maximize each identified strength.

Identify two strategies you can use to strengthen each area needing development. Explain how you will put these strategies into action. Be specific. For example, instead of stating, “I need to exercise,” your action should state “I will begin to walk 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week.” The action should be SMART- Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timeframe

Also attach your completed form

Minimum length 2-3 pages not including cover or referencing. APA formatting

The Project will give you a chance to learn how this is accomplished as you will be doing similar work with clients during the Program and as a professional nurse to assist them in the same way.

Share in a 2 – 3 page paper, the following:

Re-look at your Quality of Life Self-Care Wheel scores. Have they changed? If so, in what ways.

Think about your current levels of tension and stress. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest level, what is your score? Now think about the strategies you identified. Describe how well you have put them into action. If you have not been able to implement them, identify why and what you can do to overcome this.

Identify any new strategies that you think will “fit” better and describe why.

Module 08 Written Assignment – The Case of Mrs. G.: Client Centered Communication and Collaboration

In this written assignment, you have the opportunity to share your thoughts about how to deliver client-centered culturally competent care and work collaboratively with others.

The Case of Mrs. G.

Mrs. G. is a 75 year old Hispanic woman who has been relatively well all of her life. She had been married for 50 years and had five children. Her children are grown with families of their own. All but one of her children live in other states. Mrs. G.’s husband passed away last year, which was devastating for her. She had been very close to him and relied upon him for everything. He was “the life of the party” she always said and was a loving and caring man. Since his passing, Mrs. G. has continued to live in the house they shared for 35 years. In the last month, Mrs. G. has fallen twice sustaining injuries, though minimal. Her home health nurse comes weekly to check in on her. Mrs. G. likes her very much and wishes she could come more often. Mrs. G.’s daughter who lives in the next town over, has been worried and decided with the urging of her siblings and the doctor to start looking for an assisted living facility for her mother. She found one last week and talked with the Director who said she would be happy to help in whatever way was best. The daughter decided to tell her mother that it was time for her to move, so she can be cared for and be safe. When she told her mother, Mrs. G. cried and said, “This will not happen ever. I plan to stay in this house of loving memories for the remainder of my life.”

In 3 – 4 pages answer the following questions:

How would you best describe Mrs. G.’s feelings about her life, her family, her traditions, and her future?

Did Mrs. G.’s response to her daughter surprise you? Please explain your answer.

In what way do you believe her culture might be influencing her decision?

If you were Mrs. G.’s daughter what would you say to her that shows you are caring and have compassion for her situation? What nonverbal communication would support that level of communication?

Suppose Mrs. G. stands firm about not leaving her house. What resources and collaborations might be available and helpful so the daughter and other healthcare providers can keep her mother safe and make the most effective decision?

Module 11 Project Assignment – Next Steps

Part 3 – Next Steps

Share in a 2 – 3 page paper, the following (also attach the completed form):

Note: When you are finished besides submitting your plan, be sure to put the Plan where you can see it to remind you to continue to reflect on how you are doing and to motivate you to use the self-care strategies.

Use the Quality of Life Self-Care Wheel Plan for Intention and Action to make your intention (commitments) to take action throughout your Program to stay balanced. Re-assess your scores and write them into this Plan. Then make your intention and identify at least one action for each that you know you can maintain throughout your Program and even as a practicing nurse. Identify any new strategies that you think will “fit” better than what you have been doing and describe why.
