Ranking Salt Solutions by pH

62: Ranking Salt Solutions by pH
In this assignment you will be asked to rank aqueous solutions of acids, bases, and salts in order of
increasing pH. This is most easily done by first identifying the strong acids that have the lowest pH, the
strong bases that have the highest pH, and the neutral solutions that have a pH near 7. The weak acids
will have a pH between 1 and 6 and the weak bases between 8 and 14. The exact order of weak acids and
weak bases is determined by comparing the ionization constants (Ka for the weak acids and Kb for the
weak bases). After ranking the pH of these solutions, you will then test your predictions in the laboratory.
1. Arrange the following 0.1 M solutions in order of increasing pH and state why you placed each
solution in that position: NaCH3COO, HCl, HCN, NaOH, NH3, NaCN, KNO3, H2SO4, NH4Cl, H2SO3,
NaHCO3, Na3PO4 and CH3COOH.
In order of increasing pH:

Once you have predicted the nature of each salt solution, you will use Virtual ChemLab to confirm your
prediction. Each solution must be approximately 0.1 M for your comparisons to be valid. Most of the
solutions in the Stockroom are approximately 0.1 M already. Two solutions will need to be diluted and
three solutions will need to be prepared from solid salts. One of these salt solutions is already prepared
and on the lab bench ready for you to measure the pH.

list of assignments. The lab will open in the Titrations laboratory.
3. On the stir plate, there will be a beaker of 0.10 M ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) that has already been
prepared. The pH meter has been calibrated and is in the beaker. Record the pH of the NH4Cl solution
in the data table on the following page. When finished, drag the beaker to the red disposal bucket, and
drag the bottle of NH4Cl to the stockroom counter.

5. Open the beaker drawer (click on it) and drag a beaker to the spotlight next to the Balance. Click and
drag the bottle of NaHCO3 and place on the spot light near the balance. Click in the Balance area to
zoom in. Place a weigh paper on the balance and tare the balance. Open the bottle by clicking on the
lid (Remove Lid). Pick up the Scoop and scoop up some salt by dragging the Scoop to the bottle and
then down the face of the bottle. Each scoop position on the face of the bottle represents a different
size scoop. Pull the scoop down from the top to the second position (approximately 0.20 g) and drag
it to the weigh paper in the balance until it snaps into place. Releasing the scoop places the sample on
the weigh paper. Now drag the weigh paper from the balance to the beaker until it snaps into place
and then empty the salt into the beaker. Return to the laboratory and drag the beaker to the stir plate.
6. Drag the 25 mL graduated cylinder to the sink under the tap until it fills. When filled, it will return to the
lab bench and will indicate that it is full when you place the cursor over the cylinder. Drag the 25
mL cylinder to the beaker on the stir plate and empty it into the beaker. Place the pH probe in the
beaker and record the pH in the data table. Drag the beaker to the red disposal bucket. Double-click
the bottle of NaHCO3 to move it to the Stockroom counter. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for KNO3.
7. Click in the Stockroom. Double-click on the bottles of NH3 and H2SO4 to move them from the shelf to the
counter and return to the laboratory. Drag the bottle of NH3 to one of the three spotlights on the
lab bench. Place a beaker from the drawer on the stir plate. Drag the bottle of NH3 to the 5 mL
graduated cylinder (the smallest one) by the sink and fill the cylinder by dropping the bottle on the
cylinder. Now drag the 5 mL graduated cylinder to the beaker on the stir plate and add the 5 mL of
NH3. Add 20 mL water to the beaker by filling and emptying the 10 mL cylinder into the beaker
twice. Place the pH probe in the beaker and record the pH in the data table. Drag the beaker to the red
disposal bucket. Double-click on the NH3 bottle to move it back to the counter.
8. Repeat step 7 with H2SO4, except that you should use a 10 mL graduated cylinder of H2SO4 and
adding 15 mL water.
9. Each of the other solutions is already approximately 0.1 M. With these solutions you can pour a small
amount into the beaker that you have placed on the stir plate and place the pH probe in the solution to
measure the pH. Record the pH of each solution in the data table. Drag each beaker to the red
disposal bucket when you have finished. You must determine the pH for HCl, H2SO3, CH3COOH
(HAc), HCN, NaOH, NaCN, Na3PO4, and NaCH3COO (NaAc). You may take two bottles at a time
from the stockroom.

Unit 1 Assignment

This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the following objectives:

? Assess the fundamental science and engineering principles of solid waste management.

? Examine the impact of solid waste on human populations.

Instructions: This assignment will allow you to understand the volume of non-hazardous waste that is generated by small businesses and residential homes. A portion will go to the landfill, and a portion will go into recycling programs for reuse or for repurposing. Being able to calculate these are is important for estimating the size of facilities handling this wastes and of the equipment and personnel required to collect and transport these wastes from point of generation to final disposition.

Answer the questions directly on this document. When you are finished, select “Save As,” and save the document using this format: Student ID_Unit# (ex. 1234567_UnitI). Upload this document to BlackBoard as a .doc, docx, or .rtf file. The specified word count is given for each question. At a minimum, you must use your textbook as a resource for these questions. Other sources may be used as needed. All material from outside sources (including your textbook) must be cited and referenced in APA format. Please include a reference list after each question.

1)A front loader garbage truck of 40 cu. yd. collects municipal solid waste each week from dumpster bins of apartment complexes located throughout the city. The waste in the truck is compacted to 750 pounds/cu. yd. The uncompacted waste in the dumpster bin is 175 pounds / cu. yd. (For all parts of this question, be sure to show all of your work.)

a) How many full dumpster bins with a 3 cu. yd. capacity can be placed into the garbage truck?

b) If the apartment complex has a mandatory recycling program and each person places only 4 pounds/day of trash into the dumpster bin, how many people can the garbage truck serve before it is full?

c) If the apartment complex has a mandatory recycling program and each person places only 3.5 pounds/day of trash into the dumpster bin, how many more people can the garbage truck serve before it is full?

2) A municipal government has hired you to help them with its recycle program. Using the information in Table 2–13 on page p. 65 of the textbook, propose three key areas where you would focus the municipal program and give your reasons for your proposals. In your answer, be sure to discuss how this program would affect the population of the municipality. (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 200 words.)

3) A mobile phone is comprised of 15.5% of copper, and nickel and silver comprise 2.5% as broken down on pg.p. 66, Fig, 2–15. These three metals represent 83% of the potential toxicity that the components of the phone can exert on the environment. Describe how copper is toxic to the environment, and how this can affect the residents of an area. (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 200 words.)

4) Describe the elements of the Integrated Solid Waste Management program. Unit 2 Assignment

This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the following objectives:

? Assess the fundamental science and engineering principles of solid waste management.

? Relate leadership and management principles to effective solid waste management.

Instructions: In this unit, the management of municipal solid waste starts to be viewed from the perspective of the local government. This involves looking at questions that need to be answered to properly develop waste management policies and practices for the community. Some of the economic aspects of waste management are explored, as all these activities need to be funded and budgeted and paid for by the community.

1) Describe three key factors that help to determine the likelihood that a person will litter. Which of these factors is most likely to contribute to the probability that a person will litter. State how you came to this conclusion.

To fight litter in your community, design a six- step actionable litter plan that you can give to a project team to implement. In your plan, include the management principles that go into making this plan. Justify to the implementation team why your plan will be successful. (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 300 words.)

2) A municipal government has agreed to provide once- per- week waste collection services to a new residential community of 10,000 people. The city council has hired you to make a preliminary assessment to determine if they it should build and operate a transfer station to support the collection. For the initial analysis, assume that the community does not have a recycling program. Here is some of the initial data that the municipal engineer has collected. The round- trip distance from the residential community to the landfill is 58 miles.

• The round- trip distance from the proposed site of the transfer station will be 63 miles.

• Size The size of the residential garbage truck that collects waste from the community is 28 cubic yards.

• The garbage truck is capable to of compacting the refuse to 650 pounds per cubic yard.

• A long- haul truck is capable to of transporting 23 tons of compacted waste per trip.

• The transfer station has a fixed operating cost of $10/ton.

• The cost to operate the garbage truck is $1.30/mile.

• The cost to operate the long- haul truck is $0.56/mile.

a) Using what you have determined from the information above, assess using the principles of solid waste management. Would you recommend to the city council that a transfer station should be built and operated? Show all work on how you came to your answer. Note: Pg.p. 39 – The United Nations (UN) estimates the waste generation rate is 4.8 pound per person per day.

b) If the community operated a recycling program, would this change or support your recommendation to the city council? Show all work on how you came to your answer. Note: Pgp.. 99 – Table 3.-1 – total Total recycled municipal waste is 34.5% of generation. (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 200 words.)

Unit 3 Assignment

This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the following objectives:

? Evaluate the evolution of technologies related solid waste management.

? Describe best practices of solid waste management in an urban society.

Instructions: Advanced treatment technologies will be needed in the future to complement the traditional landfill and incineration options in use today. The objective of these technologies is to prepare wastes for disposal where combustion is present and to derive energy from municipal wastes with the benefit of reducing the volume that is landfilled after treatment. This extends the life of landfills before they become unavailable to the local community and need to be closed. The fuel value of municipal waste explored in this assignment is critical to the efficient operation of advanced technologies.

Answer the questions directly on this document. When you are finished, select “Save As,” and save the document using this format: Student ID_Unit# (ex. 1234567_UnitI). Unit 4 Assignment

This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the following objectives:

? Evaluate the evolution of technologies related to solid waste management.

? Describe best practices of solid waste management in an urban society.

Instructions: Municipalities make every effort to best use resources and technologies in their management of non-hazardous wastes. It can take 5 five to 10 ten years to construct and to permit a new landfill site. It is to everyone’s advantage to use the space in a manner that the right types of waste are disposed of and that compaction levels of the waste are high. This is accomplished when easily degradable wastes are composted, when particle sizes are uniform and every opportunity is made to remove recyclable content. The technologies in this chapter are examples of the available tools that engineers use to accomplish these objectives, and this assignment will allow you to further explore this topic.

2) A local municipality has plans to annex a suburb community of 80,000 people. Neither the municipality nor the community has a curbside recyclinge program as they both put all of their refuse into the trash bin for collection. The municipality hand sorts the refuse and recognizes that they it will need to hire new employees and establish a budget to hand sort a larger amount of waste. Assume the following: (1) hand sorting is done 8 eight hours per day; 5 five days per week and (2) employees are paid $21/hr, and that includes allotted benefits. (For Parts A and B of this question, show all of your work.)

a. How many new full-time employees will need to be hired?

MEE 5901 Advanced Solid Waste Material

Unit 5 Assignment

This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the following objectives:

? Assess the fundamental science and engineering principles of solid waste management.

? Examine the impact of solid waste on human populations.

Instructions: Biological treatment of municipal wastes are the primary means for degrading organic matter and for stabilizing the contents of the landfill. Both aerobic and anaerobic processes are functioning in landfills and compost piles. The majority of regulations are set up to protect these biological populations from being killed off or limited in their ability to complete the degradation cycle. The methane by-product can be used as an energy source to help reduce operating costs and to limit the release of a very strong greenhouse gas into the environment. This assignment will allow you to further explore these concepts.

1) Navigate to the Online Library and review some articles on landfills and on compost piles. This assignment is not about summarizing these operations but about analyzing and comparing the differences between these two fundamental principles of solid waste management. Describe when and why each of these fundamentals is appropriate for use to manage municipal solid waste. Include in your discussion details about the differences of microbial mechanisms, the end products of degradation, and of factors that help and harm the performance of these operations. How effective is each one? (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 500 words.)

2) A community of 62,000 does not have a municipal recyclinge program, and they it sends all of their its refuse to the municipal landfill. Will the landfill generate enough natural gas to meet the needs of the city if the municipality needs to annually generate 10 million cubic meters of natural gas (methane) and the city collects all of the methane that is generated? How will this affect the population of the city? Explain your answer. (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 300 words.)

MEE 5901 Advanced Solid Waste Material

Unit 6 Assignment

Scholarly Activity

A local municipality expects to close its landfill in one year, and it has decided to adopt a thermal technology for the treatment of its municipal solid waste. The city needs your help to choose between a traditional municipal waste incinerator and a pyrolysis unit. As a solid waste professional, you have been hired by the city council to provide an analysis of these two technologies.

You are tasked with preparing an executive summary that compares the two technologies. Your summary should contain the following items:

a short description of the technologies, their advantages and disadvantages, their waste products, and their economics; the fundamental science and engineering principles of solid waste management that are involved; the laws or standards that factor into your decision;

how your decision will affect the population of the community; and

your recommendation and rationale to the city.

Your executive summary should be a minimum of three pages in length. You must use your textbook and at least one resource from the Online Library in your paper, but other academic sources may be used in addition. Any outside information used must be cited in accordance to APA style, and your paper should be formatted in APA style to include a title page, running head, and reference page.

Unit 7 Assignment

This assignment will allow you to demonstrate the following objectives:

? Assess the political environment as it relates to solid waste and solid waste management.

? Summarize laws and standards related to solid waste management.

Instructions: The siting of a landfill is always contentious in a community due to operational issues with traffic and odors, and if you live close to the landfill you may deal with a decline in property values. Landfills will eventually generate leachate that can adversely impact the environment if the liner is breached, bringing toxicity to vegetation and contamination to ground water. Having a properly operating landfill can minimize many of these impacts to citizens and to the environment. This assignment will further explore these topics.

1) A community generates 225 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste per year.

a. What is the actual average annual production of methane that a community should expect from the landfill operation in BTU per year? (For Part A, show all of your work.)

b. What are the factors, laws, or standards that can limit the amount of methane production in the landfill? (Your total response for Part B should be at least 200 words.)

2) Use the treatment options in Table 8-11 (pg. 357) that lists biological and physical/chemical operations for treating leachate generated from a landfill to answer the following questions. (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 300 words.)

a. Recommend a treatment train that uses one biological and one physical chemical operation. Provide your reason for making this recommendation.

b. In what order would you put these units? Describe your reasoning for your prescribed order.

c. If your proposed treatment scheme does not meet the prescribed permit discharge limits for the facility, what post-treatment technology would you recommend to ensure that discharge limits are met. Provide your reasons for your technology selection.

d. For each part of the question, be sure to explain what law and standards factor into your recommendation or reasoning.

3) Leachate and Groundwater Monitoring

a. Why are landfills designed to have a leachate head of 12 inches on the liner? If the leachate head had the potential to build to 24 inches, what is a simple design technique that could relieve the hydraulic pressure on the liner?

b. What are the monitoring requirements for an operational landfill? Create a table to describe what each parameter measures and why knowing this is important.

c. What are the post-closure monitoring requirements? Create a table to describe what each parameter measures and why knowing this is important? (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 200 words.)

4) Assume that a landfill is proposed for a location that is located east of a forest, west of a national park, and north of a major river.

a. What are some political factors that go into deciding if this is an acceptable location for a new regional landfill?

b. What engineering modifications could you recommend that would make this site acceptable to the city council?

c. If the landfill location is rejected, what recommendations would you propose that for managing the municipal solid waste for the community? (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 200 words.)

MEE 5901 Advanced Solid Waste Material

Unit 8 Scholarly Activity

You are an engineer in a design, build, and operate construction firm. The firm has received four requests for proposals (RFPs) and can only respond to one of these. You have been asked to review the RFP from Washentaw County, Michigan, and write up a three-page executive summary for the marketing team. After reading all of the executive summaries, the marketing team will make a decision about which, if any, of the RFPs to respond to.

The RFP from Washentaw County is located here: https://www.washtenaw.org/DocumentCenter/View/2386/RFP-6857-PDF

Your executive summary should include the following items:

an introduction that includes a detailed overview of the project scope;

identification of the required information to be included into the company response to the RFP; your concerns about any of the obligations in the RFP; how any negotiations with Washentaw County could affect the decision (i.e.,What collaborative methods of problem solving could be used to solve the marketing team’s problem of choosing an RPF? How could these methods be applied to this situation?); and your justified recommendation to respond or to pass on this business opportunity. This should include a description of the leadership and management principles that factored into your decision.

Also, as stated in the RFP, the criteria for making a decision will depend on the following three areas: price, collection and methodology, and responsiveness to the bid. While you cannot address the price issue, you can cover in your recommendation discussion the collection methodology and the level of detail that you would recommend when responding to the bid.

Your response should be at least three pages in length. At a minimum, you should use information from your textbook to support your answer, but other academic resources may be used as well. Any resources used should by cited in accordance with APA guidelines. Format your response in APA style to include a title page, running head, and reference page.

Consumer Behavior Research Project MRKT355: Consumer Behavior

Consumer Behavior Research Project

MRKT355: Consumer Behavior

Term Project

All students must complete a major project that is due at the end of the term. The purpose of this project is to provide you with an opportunity to:

Examine a consumer behavior-related issue and/or problem in detail and first-hand,

Gain experience analyzing a consumer behavior issue/problem that is not “pre-digested” or well laid out for you (e.g., you are not presented with all the relevant information in a tidy case format),

Design and analyze primary market research that you have collected,

Apply some of the important concepts and knowledge you have acquired in the course, and

Combine your conceptual, theoretical, and analytic knowledge and skills with your creativity

For the project, each student should select a real-world marketing issue in which consumer behavior plays a critical role (some examples are listed below). This issue can be one that a company or organization that you have access to is grappling with or one that you can acquire information about by reading business or other publications.

Some examples of consumer behavior issues include:

How do marketers shape young consumers’ self-concept?

What kinds of consumers collect certain products (e.g., beanie babies, precious moments sculptures) and why?

Depiction of men in advertising and how it’s changed over the decades?

Understanding the psychology and consumption behavior of teens?

Experiential marketing and appealing to consumers’ senses (color, taste, sounds, scents, etc.)

How effective is social media in influencing purchase decisions?

Choose a topic for your project for which there is a high level of interest. Spend some time brainstorming about different possibilities. Don’t decide on the first topic that comes to mind. The time invested in this preliminary stage can pay off in the long run. If your project focuses on a particular product, service, or organization, students generally uncover more interesting and insightful results for new products, underdeveloped products or product categories, products that have underutilized marketing (e.g., dentists, some banks), or products that have experienced a loss of appeal among consumers (small bookstores). On the other hand, feel free to study a more general topic that pertains to consumer behavior (e.g., overeating in America and the weight loss industry).

Your task for the project is two-fold: diagnose the key issues underlying the consumer behavior problem and develop a marketing plan consisting of suggestions for addressing the problems. To better understand the problem, you will be expected to obtain secondary data from the library, trade organizations, the company, etc. You may also conduct your own primary research. This might entail conducting interviews with one or more segments of relevant but reasonably accessible consumers or influencers. You must include at least five references in your Works Cited list; however, no more than one can be from Wikipedia. Personal interviews are cited in your paper, but they are not included in the Works Cited list.

Your report must be typed, contain appendices that offer details such as those pertaining to your primary research and your documented references. The paper should be written in APA format and should be about ten double-spaced pages, excluding title page, references, and appendices. The report will be evaluated on the following criteria:

Extent and soundness of the insightful inferences and recommendations or conclusions drawn from your references, primary research data, and general knowledge

The soundness and internal consistency of the logic offered for all of your recommendations

Appropriateness, quality, and thoughtfulness of your primary research materials, data analysis, and data interpretation

Comprehensive and thoughtful coverage of the issues

Identification and application of relevant consumer behavior concepts/theories from the course (refer to concepts in your book!)

Presentation of the report in terms of organization of material and its logical presentation flow, sentence structure, and general professionalism

The final paper should contain:

A statement of the consumer behavior issue being studied (1/2 to 1 pages)

A description of the methodology used for the research (1/2 to 1 page)

A thorough analysis of both the consumer behavior issue and the findings of the research (3-5 pages)

Recommendations for marketing actions based on your analysis (3-5 pages),

A reference list for your secondary research

Appendices containing details of your primary research or any other pertinent information

PLEASE NOTE: Internet searches will often take you to non-academic information resources such as Wikipedia.com, Ask.com, Encarta.msn.com, Infoplease.com, etc. You may supplement your research with these sources, but keep in mind that the information you find there may not be accurate, since it does not come under a formal oversight or peer-review process. While you may use and cite non-academic resources such as Wikipedia (once) when working on assignments, you may not rely on them exclusively. The majority of your sources should be peer-reviewed academic journals or reputable business magazines and newspapers (Wall Street, Business Week, Advertising Age – just to give a few examples).

Time Value of Money

The Eurozone has some countries with severe debt problems: Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and Spain (sometimes known as PIIGS). These Euro countries are looking for and have been assured of a “bail-out” process so that no one defaults on their debt. What do you now think is likely to happen to the relative value of the Euro?

Important Notes:

Please note that this is an MBA course so you must show and demonstrate your ability to provide reasoning for your response to discussion questions. ?

It is also required that all the students participate on a regular basis and with some serious thoughts; that is, all the students are required to respond to minimum of two other students’ postings with some serious thoughts. In addition, all the students must provide their own answers to Discussion questions.

Module 2 discussion

Stocks and Bonds

Prior to the financial crisis in 2007/2008, the U.S. Treasury Department as well as Congress had been asking China to revalue upwards the value of their Renminbi or Yuan. China responded to these repeated requests by allowing the Yuan to trade within a narrow band. The band itself was then shifted upwards or downwards by small increments from time to time. Still, the U.S. claimed that China had not done enough and should raise the value of the Yuan by at least a further 20%. The reasons given to justify this requested increase were as follows:

The artificially low value of the Yuan makes U.S. manufactured exports unattractively priced in China.

The undervalued Yuan leads to excessive U.S. imports of Chinese-made goods, which in turn, leads to an unwelcome trade balance in China’s favor. For example, the trade deficit with China was roughly -$258,506.0 million in year 2007. These numbers shrunk further during 2009 as recession hit the global economy. In year 2011, the trade deficit with China was roughly -295,456.5 million (http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/balance/c5700.html).

China chose to change their ‘floating’ arrangement and pegged the Yuan to the USD at a rate they selected. China holds such a large investment in U.S. Treasuries as a result of the continuing U.S. trade surpluses that the U.S. does not have a great deal of leverage. If China sold those Treasuries the U.S. dollar would fall significantly in value.

Discuss the issues involved with pegging or floating the Yuan to the US dollar.

Module 4 reflective discussion

Given the readings and assignments in this course discuss three concepts that you believe are likely to be the most important for your own career. Explain how these concepts may be applicable and how you expect the knowledge you have gained to be helpful.

IFSM300 Haircuts Stage 4

sure you:

1. Have completed all previously assigned readings, particularly those assigned in Weeks 3 and 4 of the class.

2. Re-read the “Haircuts Case Study” and the Stage 1, 2 & 3 assignments, and review the “Walmart Example.”

3. Text box: purpose of this assignment this assignment gives you the opportunity to apply the concepts of this course to address the selection, planning, development, implementation and on-going management of a technology solution for the haircuts business. this assignment specifically addresses the following course outcome to enable you to: • identify and plan it solutions that meet business objectives Review Instructor feedback from previous assignment submissions.

Overview of IT Solution and Next Steps for Haircuts

For your Case Study Stage 1 assignment, you performed a Five Forces Analysis and justified Myra’s chosen generic strategy for competitive advantage andthe business process that she would like to improve through the application of technology.

For your Stage 2 assignment, you identified the inputs, processing, and outputs of Myra’s selected business process. Those inputs, processing, and outputs form the functional (business) requirements for an IT system to improve the process.

In Stage 3, you identified the IT requirements by evaluating their applicability and importance in a new system to be implemented to improve the identified business process for Haircuts.

Following your analysis of the business environment and the business and IT requirements, Myra Morningstar has decided to move ahead and implement an IT solution. She has asked you to identify an IT solution and explain what the steps would be to implement it.

Since Haircuts is a small business, Myra should take advantage of a Software as a Service (SaaS), or a cloud-based system, that has already been developed and is maintained and operated by a vendor. You should do some research and find a vendor-provided solution that will support the process that is being improved. Refer to the process model and your Stage 2 inputs, processing, and outputs that define the business requirements; and refer to your Stage 3 IT requirements as you select an appropriate solution. Consider the cost of the solution as you make your choice, so that your recommended solution will be affordable for Myra.

For this assignment, you will prepare a short paper explaining your proposed IT solution and the next steps in the implementation of that solution. The next steps will include everything that Myra needs to do, from getting a subscription to the software (or otherwise arranging to use it), to purchasing hardware, to preparing employees and implementing the system. The specific steps and how they are accomplished will be different for different system solutions.

Assignment: Haircuts Stage 4:Write a short paper that includes:

I. Introduction: Introduce what is to come in your paper, and include the generic strategy for competitive advantage and the business process to be improved.

II. Proposed IT Solution: Identifythe vendor and the system you selected to improve the process at Haircuts. Explain why you selected that system over others, including how it best meets the business requirements (see Stage 2) and IT requirements (see Stage 3) of Haircuts. Explain if/how cost was a factor in your selection.

III. Implementation Steps: Identify and explain the steps Myra will have to take to implement the system you have proposed. Include:

a. Vendor agreement – What does Myra need to do in order to be able to start using the system? How much will it cost to use the system?

b. Hardware and Telecommunications – What hardware will Myra need to install at Haircuts in order to implement the solutions? What kind of telecommunications will be needed for the solution, including local connectivity inside Haircuts and Internet access? How will she acquire the necessary hardware components and Internet access?

c. Configuration – What options does the vendor offer for configuring the system to Haircuts’ needs? How will the configuration be done, and by whom?

d. Testing – How will Myra test the system to see if it is working properly for her needs?

e. Employee preparation – What will Myra need to do to prepare her employees to use the new system?

f. Data Migration – How will the current employee work schedules be entered into the system to get started? How will the customer appointments that have already been made for future dates be entered?

g. System use – Who will use the system and for what purposes? When users have questions about how to use the system, how will they get answers?

h. Maintenance – Who will provide updates and corrections to the system?

IV. Conclusion: Close your paper with a brief summary of the entire project and what benefits Myra can expect to gain from it.

References: Incorporate at least oneexternal resource (NOTE: two or more external resources are required to receive all possible points) into your paper on an area of your choice. An external resource is a resource other than those provided in the class or textbook. Incorporate a properly formatted APA citation in the text of your document. Then, place an APA style list of references at the end of your paper.

Formatting:

· Write a short, concise paper, about 3-4 pages in length.

· Your paper should be double-spaced.

· For academic writing, the writer is expected to write in the third person. In third person, the writer avoids the pronouns I, we, my, and our. The third person is used to make the writing more objective by taking the individual, the “self,” out of the writing. This method is very helpful for academic writing, a form in which facts, not opinion, drive the tone of the text. Writing in the third person allows the writer to come across as unbiased and thus more informed.

· Use at least one external resource (two for full credit) with APA formatted citation and reference.

· Include a title page and a reference page.

· Compare your final work to the rubric to be sure you have met content and quality criteria.

· Submit your paper as a Word document, or a document that can be read in Word.

· Your submission should include your last name first in the filename: Lastname_firstname_Stage _4

Accounting Project 1 SeaSide Marina

Project 1 SeaSide Marina

This project requires you to tie all parts of the accounting process together in a relatively simple manner. It is intended to enhance your understanding of fundamental accounting concepts and illustrate how all parts of an accounting system join together. You are required to complete a set of typical transactions, post the transactions to the General and Subsidiary Ledgers, complete a trial balance, month end adjustments, and an adjusted trial balance. Some students have found it helpful to complete the transactions in the workbook first.

The final part of the project requires you to put together a complete set of financial statements (including a classified balance sheet and a multiple-step income statement) as well as the first footnote in most financial reports (Summary of Significant Accounting Policies). This is to be done manually not in the Seaside software

Seaside Marina is an online program that contains program files that are downloaded and installed on your PC (the program does not work on Apple computers). This program is a learning tool and is not intended to demonstrate an actual commercial automated accounting system. The program files contain both a workbook file along with documentation in PDF format (make sure you print out this file for reference). In addition to the workbook and documentation, there is a link to access the online software. In order to access the online Seaside program for the first and subsequent sessions, you are required to have a session id number and product code. TheSession ID number is7007 for our class and the product code will be emailed to you along with a link to download the Seaside Marina software after your purchase is complete. Note: The e-mail sent by Ivy Software is often blocked by the Siena SPAM filter. Make sure you check your blocked messages after you order the software to insure you get yourSeaside Marina Download Link and Product Code.” Ivy Software recommends that you write the session id number and product code on your workbook after printing it out. Instructions for how to complete the Seaside Marina project are contained in the workbook file and should be carefully reviewed before beginning the project.

To purchase the software, please click on the link directly to the Siena College order page:http://shop.ivysoftware.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=229. Adjustment Information:
Summarize and post the appropriate columns of the special journals and prepare the trial balance section
of the worksheet to prove that the general ledger is in balance. Next, prepare the subsidiary ledger
schedules to verify that the subsidiary ledgers balance with their control accounts. Then, journalize and
post the adjusting entries using the following information and the journals and ledgers.
Assume 360 days for any interest calculations and follow the traditional rules for rounding. For example,
$5.415 rounds to $5.42 and $5.414 rounds to $5.41.
1. Physical inventories as of June 30, 20XX are as follows:
Office Supplies $115
Store Supplies $430

Store Equipment $200 120 months
Warehouse $4000 240 months
3. Seaside must accrue salaries of $240 for the last three days of June. Employee income taxes are

balance. Then, journalize and post the closing entries using the following information, the worksheet and
the general ledger.

  • What background information concerning this case study exist?
  • What do I already know about this general topic?
  • What is the underlying problem? What are the symptoms of the problem?
  • What is the decision that needs to be made?
  • Are there any constraints or limitations?
  • Is there an urgency regarding this situation.

The second part of your paper will use what you know from your readings, using cause and effect. For this part of the exam, you want to use the two concepts that you discussed since the last exam, and you will also use two concept from the previous weeks to make your arguments. You may find that some of these concepts will work better with this case study, but I encourage you to synthesis arguments that take unique visions of these concepts. Remember to support your arguments.

  • What concepts from your reading are relevant to this question? Why are they relevant to this argument?
  • What are the opposing sides of this case? What is the evidence that could be used to support each side of the argument? Where does the relevant information from your readings support one side of the argument?
  • Based on the relevant information in your readings, what information is missing?
  • What are the alternatives ways to resolve this issue, based on your understanding of your readings? NOTE: You should have two or three alternatives.

The third part of your paper should come to some

  • Which side of the argument does you support lean toward based on the information in your readings?
  • What questions do you have that would make affect your final determination on this case? What are your expected answers, and how would they affect your final argument?

This has brought up the continual questioning of Facebooks own use of customer data, as well as the issues of the way Facebook could be seen as a sloppy steward of the data they have collected.

One articles that highlight the issues is:

Facebook, Big Data, and the Trust of the Public

Facebook is facing these ethical dilemmas as it announces that the company is delving further into AI applications and research, telling consumers that they are approaching this technology with ethics in mind. There are two articles on CNET from yesterday that discuss how the company is moving forward with these projects, though they may not have public support due to fears of customers that their privacy may be violated.

Facebook starts building AI with an ethical compass
Facebook’s new dating service hopes love conquers all, even privacy issues

As these social media companies grow larger and more powerful, and as technology advances, there is a growing concern about the ability of these mega giants to use the evolving technologies to monitor and enact surveillance on unknowing consumers. The following video, though majorly flawed, illustrates a growing concern:

I want to point out that the young man who created this video did some research, and realized that it was the close captioning software that he was using to make the streaming video on Youtube that was pulling out key words to target the advertisement. By the way, this is not the only video on Youtube where people are trying to definitively prove that Google, Facebook, SnapChat, Twitter, and other social media companies are monitoring their customers. As our technology has become more technologically converged, every phone and most computers have a camera and a microphone. Most phone have geotagging capabiities, that can pinpoint any user’s location within a few feet. Phone apps have been using this data for years to tell you how close a potential suitor is to you, or how close a particular business or service is to you. But these apps also know where you are located, and the potential for misuse has always been in the background.

Remember, you are not expected to take a political stand on this issue. You are expected to look at the events and the situation through the “lens” of the reading and the viewing assignments you had been assigned for the first fourteen weeks of class. Though this case study has a political significance, look at those political issue through the lens of your readings.

GB601 -Conduct research to validate the statement made above by McMurrian and Matulich.

Discussion Question

In week two one task that your team will face is to analyze growth opportunities for expansion. In the global economy there are many strong ties between corporate ethics and profit. McMurrian and Matulich offer this hypothesis, “In fact, a reputation for ethical business activities can be a major source of competitive advantage” (2006, p. 11). For this discussion question you will:

1. Conduct research to validate the statement made above by McMurrian and Matulich.

2. Post the APA compliant results of your research to include at least one company that has successfully applied their ethics or values with profitable results and one company that has lost profit dollars when they have acted in non compliance with their ethics.

3. Comment on how this research applies to your current employer or one that you have worked for in the past.

4. Comment on how this research will increase the effectiveness of your simulation team’s decision-making.

Week 2

Please review the Discussion Board Participation grading rubric on your course syllabus. This is important information that will ensure that you earn maximum points. Your professionally written APA compliant postings, using appropriate sources should provide substantive depth that advances the discussion. Also, please be sure to edit your posts for grammatical errors before you post.

Discussion

In your business growth plans for this week, one area you will be focusing on is recruitment and retention of employees. Your text states “In a recent survey of 173 CEO/founders…the HR issues seen as most important included: recruitment/ selection/ retention/ compensation and special pay programs…” (Cadotte & Bruce, 2003, p.359). A unique recruitment and retention challenge faced by current CEO’s is that for the first time in history multiple generations work side by side. “Each group has its own distinct characteristics, values, and attitudes toward work, based on its generation’s life experiences” (American Management Association, 2007, ¶ 2). For this discussion question respond to the following, supported by scholarly sources:

a. Define the generations as referenced by the American Management Association.

b. Talk about the motivations for each of these generations.

c. Research the challenges faced by employers in creating compensation/rewards programs that will satisfy all generations.

d. Discuss how the company you presently work for accomplishes this goal.

e. Recommend changes or improvements that your present company could make to their current practices.

Discussion Topic

As your company grows and faces increasingly complex challenges, you may be finding that the original strategy you created is changing. You are also changing and growing to meet these new challenges. Senge (2007) tells us “The organizations that will excel in the future will be those that can tap the commitment and capacity to learn of people at all levels within them” (para 5). Senge’s 5 key disciplines are “1) systems thinking, 2) achieving personal mastery, 3) shifting mental models, 4) building shared vision, and 5) team learning” (2007, para 6). They are key to achieving the goal of creating the learning organization.

For this week’s discussion question, you will be reviewing the readings for this week, viewing to the Extra Extra videos, and using your own organization to research how these disciplines can be integrated into organizational growth and improvement. Your response should contain the following information:

1. A brief description of your current employment organization or one that you have worked for in the past.

2. A review of how these disciplines have been integrated (either formally or informally) within the organization and the impact on organizational effectiveness.

3. Commentary on how the organization can improve.

4. How you can integrate this information into your business plan in the classroom team.

Sources of Capital

All small business owners find themselves looking for small business funding at one point or another. In this simulation you are preparing to seek funding from venture capitalist, but there are many other sources of funding to consider. The small business owner must determine how these sources marry with company vision, mission and values, and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each funding source. For this discussion question you will conduct research on these funding sources and:

1. Present a high level overview of at least 4 types of sources.

2. Select the top 2 sources that you think would be a best fit for the growth stage of your business.

3. Discuss how you would identify specific companies/individuals within these 2 choices to find one that is the most compatible with your organizations values.

4. Cite one example of a company that has achieved this goal

Discussion Topic

Last week you presented to the venture capital team and received feedback on how to increase your chances of success as you grow your company. You will be incorporating this feedback into your business plan and possibly changing your strategy. Linkow tells us “In this rapidly changing world with tight–and getting tighter–resources, the capacity to make and execute strategy is a source of competitive advantage. Organizations that don’t have strategic competence embedded in their infrastructures will fall behind” (1999, p. 37). In his article, Linkow identifies several thinking competencies that are common in great strategic thinkers:

· reframing

· scanning

· abstracting

· multivariate thinking

· envisioning

· inducting

· valuating (p. 35)

For your discussion question response this week, select 2 of these competencies and in your response:

1. Define each competency using Linkow’s work and other sources you discover in your research.

2. Discuss the impact achieving a high degree of skill in these competencies can have on an organization’s growth.

3. Select a business leader that has exhibited either one or both of these competencies and give an example to support your thoughts.

4. Talk about how this information can be helpful to your team as they change the business plan.

5. Describe how personal integration of this information can increase your effectiveness as a team member.

Unit 6

Discussion Topic

You have been working in virtual teams starting from the first week and needed to be highly effective almost instantaneously. In week 6 you will be presenting to the board and one area of this presentation includes lessons learned throughout the simulation. One key area you will address is how the team learned to work together from the outset, how you continued to maximize individual strengths to create a high performing team, and what you will be doing to continue this development. In this discussion question address the following:

1. What process the team employed to engage all team members quickly?

2. How successful was your team process?

3. How roles and responsibilities were assigned? Please include information from

a.your insights profile

b.the tools in the textbook reading

c.Other assessment tools that you think are valuable to share

4. What best practices this and from previous courses, articles, books, and assignments have helped you?

5. What changes did you need to make along the way to ensure that the team operated in a highly effective fashion?

6. How will you apply this knowledge to your workplace and other teams you will be operating on in the future?

Individual assignments

Ethical Considerations in Global Expansion

Overview

In Unit 1 you formed a team and started the process of company growth. Part of this team formation was to create a values profile. In week 2 one task that your team will

face is to analyze growth opportunities for expansion. There are several factors that will impact your decision making, “Total demand in any quarter will be determined by (1) the

market’s sales potential, (2) the seasonal and economic conditions of the global economy, and (3) the nature and extent of competition” (Cadotte & Bruce, 2003, p.3).

Another consideration is one of ethics; do your company values support the expansion choices you will be making? Decision making tied to ethics and values may not be easy but can be advantageous. McMurrian and Matulich (2006) cite Ferrell “These advantages include higher levels of efficiency in operations, higher levels of commitment and loyalty from employees, higher levels of perceived product quality, higher levels of customer loyalty and retention, and better financial performance (Ferrell 2004)” (p.11).

Social Media Integration into Advertising Strategy

Overview

You and your team will be working this week on crafting marketing and advertising strategies to capture market share for the five market segments as seen below.

The Cost Cutter segment is a large segment that looks for a very easy-to-use computer for very basic office applications. The segment is very price sensitive.
The Workhorse segment is the largest group of customers. They want a PC for a variety of office workers to use. It should have substantial capability and flexibility, although not top of the line. Ease of use is more important than high performance. It should also be modestly priced.
The Innovator segment is a small segment that uses a computer for large computational problems (engineering, accounting, inventory management). The segment wants the latest technology and will pay a small premium for this high performance.
The Mercedes segment is looking for a high-performance computer to use in sophisticated engineering and manufacturing applications. Mercedes customers are willing to pay substantially more for high performance. At the start of the exercise, Mercedes customers are not in the market for PCs. They prefer mainframes and minicomputers. It is not likely that Mercedes customers will be willing to buy until sometime in the second year when new computer technology is introduced.
The Traveler segment wants a practical computer to use on the road. Traveler customers are executives and salespeople who travel a great deal. This segment is moderately price sensitive.

Cadotte and Bruce (2003) state “Your overall marketing strategy should include an integrated marketing communication (IMC) strategy. That is, all forms of communication with your target audience should be designed to have a common message and support each other” (pg. 163). To achieve penetration to your target markets, you must keep consistency but also differentiate your advertisement campaigns to accommodate for individual market segments. “Advertisers use multiple outlets to ensure you place advertisements in media that that their ad campaign is seen” (Cadotte & Bruce, 2003, p.165). Social media is a relative newcomer to the marketing and advertising toolbox and must be integrated carefully into the overall strategy and more importantly into the strategy for each target audience.

Requirements

In a 4-6 page APA formatted paper excluding title page, reference page, abstracts, diagrams, and other visual/oral aids as appropriate, you will:

Report on the leading edge trends in integrating social media into traditional marketing and advertising campaigns.

Create specific recommendations for incorporating social media into the market segments your company is targeting.

Include a detailed discussion of how these recommendations fulfill the balance of integrated and differentiated requirements as recommended by Cadotte and

Bruce (2003).
