  • Teaching Skills in ABA

    Your client is not yet able to engage in verbal responses. As an ABA practitioner, your goal is to teach these skills. As language is complex, you decide to first run your assessment to identify which verbal operant requires immediate attention in terms of teaching. Perhaps you need to teach the mand (requesting). Or do you need to teach tacting (labeling)? Or is it listening responding skills? Once you have identified the area of teaching, you must teach it. Based on many variables, this teaching can be done in a contrived way in a specific environment (DTT) or under a natural environment (NET). Which skills are best to test with DTT? How about NET?

    This week, you will learn more about strategies that can be used when teaching skills in ABA. You will discuss how to use instructions and rules to teach behavior. You will also cover commonly used techniques for teaching simple and conditional discriminations, as well as examine several teaching methods that can be found in ABA teaching programs, such as errorless learning, discrete trial, free operant, and naturalistic teaching strategies.

    Teaching Skills in ABA

    The use of evidence-based teaching strategies will be critical in ensuring skill acquisition. In this week’s readings, you will examine Behavior Skills Training (BST), an evidence-based method of teaching skills with a great deal of empirical support showing its effectiveness. You will also be learning about the importance of stimulus control and errorless teaching and read a study in which BST is utilized to evoke a safety response around firearms.

    • G-04: Use stimulus and response prompts and fading (for example, errorless, most-to-least, least-to-most, prompt delay, and stimulus fading).
    • G-06: Use instructions and rules.
    • G-09: Use discrete-trial, free-operant, and naturalistic teaching arrangements.
    • G-10: Teach simple and conditional discriminations.

    INSTRUCTOR CONTACT SESSION

    In this two-hour session, your instructor addresses specific topics related to ABA. Listen to the lecture, then respond to any ASR questions through polls, participate in small breakout groups, and engage in discussions with your peers and instructor in the chat area.

    ICSs are not graded, but you must attend and participate in seven of the 10 sessions to pass the course. Participation is defined as:

    • Attending ICS by phone or Zoom.
    • Actively providing spoken or written input during ICS.
    • Responding to the ASRs through polls in Zoom.
    • Being available if code words are given out by your instructor.

    It is strongly recommended that you view the recordings of any sessions that you miss to ensure that you are apprised of any important information on assignments, discussion posts, and other assigned work that may have been provided.

    Next week, you will be expected to gather nine scholarly articles to develop your literature review. The articles you choose should include consequence-based strategies to reduce the problem target behavior.

    For this discussion, complete the following:

    • Find three articles that support specific consequence-based strategies. These strategies focus on what you do after a behavior occurs.
    • Post the APA-formatted citation for each article in the discussion.
    • Provide a synopsis of one of the selected articles.
    • Identify common concepts and principles used in the three studies you chose.
    • Identify ethical codes that should be considered when choosing interventions.
