The prevailing mindset in our society is that the thirteen colonies seceded from Great Britain and declared their independence. Historically this is exactly what happened. In modern times, we often have a tendency to sweepingly apply the mindset of independence to all the citizens of the time period. However, it is important to remember that the colonies were deeply divided over the issue of independence. Most people actually favored loyalty to Britain rather than independence. Our modern, collective interpretation of American independence is an example of the old adage, “History is written by the victors.” In order to get a well-rounded understanding of the truth, it is important that we have an understanding of as many perspectives as possible.
