What is the sample size, and is the sample size large enough to avoid hastiness?

Homework Assignment: Analyzing Inductive Arguments

Answer all questions completely. You should answer the questions in essay form, providing an ARGUMENT for why your “strong” poll should be considered strong, and why your “weak” poll should be considered weak.

  • Your essay must be a minimum of 1000 words, not including your “Works Cited” section at the end of your essay.
  • Submit your responses in the text box provided when you click on “submit assignment.”
  • Do not attach any files to your submission.
  • Your essay will be automatically checked through the “Turn It In” system, so make sure that you are responsibly citing your sources, including quotation marks around quoted material, and using your own words for any summarizing or paraphrasing.

To complete this assignment, you need to have read chapter 10. The goal of this assignment is for the student to demonstrate an ability to distinguish a strong inductive argument from a weak inductive argument.

ASSIGNMENT: Find two public opinion polls from 2014 or later, one of which offers weak support for its conclusion, the other of which offers strong support for its conclusion. The polls can be about any topic. Answer the following questions about each of the polls:

  1. What is the property in question (what question is asked of the sample population)?
  2. What is the sample size, and is the sample size large enough to avoid hastiness?
  3. From where was the sample population taken (what types of people are included in the sample)?
  4. What was the methodology in selecting the sample? Was it randomly selected? If so, explain the precise method of random selection (Do not simply say “telephone survey.” Do not simply say “randomly selected telephone survey. Be specific! Do not say “the survey did not say how the sample was selected.” Choose a survey from a polling organization that does reveal the method of selecting the sample, or do research on the survey or polling organization by going to their web site.  You must have a precise and detailed answer to this question! See the sample assignment submission PDF for an example of how this question can be answered relatively successfully.) Or was the sample selected in some other way, i.e. self-selection?
  5. Were there any opportunities for bias (as defined in chapter 10) to creep into the sample? Explain.
  6. What is the target population?
  7. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being very weak, 10 being very strong), what numerical value would you assign to the poll? Briefly explain your answer.
  8. Provide a Works Cited area at the bottom of your essay, in MLA format, to indicate where you got the surveys, and any other information pertaining to the surveys. You must also cite your sources in the text of your essay, in MLA format.

Your essay should be a minimum of 1000 words, and your answers to the above question must be in essay form, not in list form.

Case Studie

Scenario One: Belinda

Belinda is an 18-year-old woman and is pregnant with her second child. Belinda believes she is 8.5 months pregnant, but she is not really sure. She has not seen a doctor since her initial doctor visit when she took the pregnancy test. She has not had any prenatal care during her pregnancy. Belinda’s first child, Benny, was delivered by cesarean section and is now 16 months old.

Belinda is an American Indian and has a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) for both Muscogee Creek Nation and Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes. Belinda is currently living in an apartment with her children’s father, but she suspects that they will be evicted soon for not paying rent. Neither Belinda nor the children’s father has a job, and both have been unemployed for several months. Belinda and her boyfriend do not have transportation. Additionally, neither has any personal identification documents—such as a social security card, birth certificate, or driver’s license—other than a CDIB card.

Belinda would like to become a nurse, but she dropped out of high school half way through the ninth grade.

Critically Thinking About Your Products

For many Americans, morning is the time at which they are exposed to the most toxins, and morning is the time at which they consume the most products that may be harmful to other people, animal, and the environment. This assignment is an opportunity for you to learn about one grooming/hygiene product you use while you get ready for your day.

Choose a grooming or hygiene product that you use daily, or almost daily, as you “get ready” for work or school. It should be a product about which you have little knowledge; it can be anything from your toothpaste to your shampoo to your lipstick. Now do extensive research on that product. Your research should include the following findings:

  • The specific name/brand of the specific product you are researching
  • The ingredients of the product,
  • Any potential harm those ingredients may cause to you, or to the environment (use the skills you acquired on generalizations from samples to causal studies to help interpret the findings…actually discuss the studies that “prove” that the ingredient is harmful in some way),
  • Where the ingredients are acquired and any potential environmental or human damage the acquisition of those ingredients may cause (so feel free to discuss human rights issues that you think are relevant)
  • Any potential harm the actual manufacturing of the product may cause, from the people who make the product, to the waste products from the factory,
  • Any other information you find useful for the purposes of this assignment.

The goal of this assignment is for you to become better informed about the impact a small action can have on the world, and be more aware of how you affect the world around you. Your essay should prove why the product is bad or harmful in some way, so you are essentially presenting an argument based on the findings of your research.

The essay must be at least 1000 words in length, not exceeding 2000 words by too much.

strategies for facilitating and maintaining positive group collaboration

The dynamic and increasingly complex world of health care often requires nurses to work collaboratively on interprofessional teams. In the group environment, individuals with unique skills and expertise come together to focus on a common goal; however, groups must become cohesive before they can become effective.

Your experiences working with groups—whether you perceive them as positive, negative, or neutral—can be used to facilitate insight and development. Health care, with its focus on interprofessional teamwork and collaboration, offers ample opportunities and an imperative for continuous learning.

For this Discussion, you focus on strategies for facilitating the group process.

To prepare:

  • Review the information in this week’s Learning Resources regarding the stages of group formation, problematic roles individuals play in groups, and strategies for facilitating and maintaining positive group collaboration. In particular, review Learning Exercise 19.12 on page 464 of the course text.
  • Reflect on various groups with which you have been or are currently involved. Select one specific group to analyze for the purposes of this Discussion. Identify the purpose or task that the group is or was meant to perform.
  • Consider the four stages of group formation (forming, storming, norming, and performing). How would you describe the progression between stages? Is there a stage in which you believe your group is or was “stuck”?
  • Consider the task or group-building role you normally play in a group setting. How could you apply the information from the Learning Resources to improve your group participation and facilitation, as well as the functioning of the group as a whole?
  • In addition, think about which individuals within your group (including yourself) may fall into problematic roles such as the Dominator, the Aggressor, or the Blocker. How have you and your group members addressed the enactment of these roles and its impact on interactions? With information from the Learning Resources in mind, what strategies would you apply now or going forward?

On the Week 5 Discussion Board, post on or before Day 3 a description of a group with which you have been or are currently involved. Assess where the group is in terms of the four stages of group formation. If you are reflecting on a past experience, explain if your group moved through all four stages. Describe the task or group-building role you typically play, or played, in this group. Then, explain what strategies you, as a leader, can apply to better facilitate the group process and address any problematic individual roles in the group.

Patient Safety Standards

Topic 1: Policy Implications of Patient Safety Standards and Practices

Read the case study number one, Moving to a Common Core Interprofessional Patient Safety Curriculum on page 254 in Health Policy and Politics: A Nurse’s Guide , by Milstead. Why is it important that health professionals share a common understanding of patient safety standards and practices? What are the policy implications from accepting that “mistakes are normal and all human err”? How would you approach health care systems leaders or employers about changing employment policies related to punitive actions when errors occur?
