In Chapters 3 and 4 of your primary text, Farrar and Montgomery discuss executive functioning and memory development (2015), and the factors that influence brain development. For this assignment, you will build upon that knowledge by further investigating how the brain learns. Remember that working memory, attention, and executive functions are interconnected and are crucial to the learning process. This includes the ability for a child to pay attention, demonstrate inhibitory control, and goal-directed behavior. Children may possess varying degrees of each of these functions, but they work together to create cognitive control and flexibility. For this assignment, you will assume the role of a professional development coordinator for your state’s early childhood programs and develop a flyer titled “How the Brain Learns” that informs families about the role of working memory, attention, and executive function in learning and development. Claire is 33 years old and lives with her younger sister and second cousin. Claire was fired from her last job at a 24-hour convenience store for behavioral issues and for not arriving on time for work.

 

Claire was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was 18 years old and has been on many different medications to stabilize her moods. Claire has been taking an antidepressant to treat her bipolar disorder and attending maintenance counseling off and on for the past 2 or 3 years.

 

Claire is enrolled in Medicaid, which pays for her medications, but she cannot find her Medicaid card, her birth certificate, or her state identification card. Claire also goes through cycles where she does not want to take her medication.  Claire’s sister and cousin are threatening to kick Claire out for not taking her medication, not attending her counseling sessions, and not paying bills or rent for the last 4 months.

 

Claire would like to take the required test to obtain her high school equivalency diploma and be able to afford her own apartment.

Discussion: Racism and Privilege

In many societies certain groups possess more resources and hold more power than other groups. In some of these societies, racial discrimination and racial tension also exist. While members of the societies may openly acknowledge that unequal distribution of power and racism are present in their society, many fail to examine the complex relationships between privilege and racism. Social workers must understand this complex relationship so they can educate and empower their clients. Empowerment is the cornerstone of social work practice.

In the book Black Empowerment, the author,Barbara Solomon, writes, “Empowerment refers to a process whereby persons who belong to a stigmatized social category throughout their lives can be assisted to develop and increase skills in the exercise of interpersonal influence and the performance of valued social roles” (p. 6).

Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client’s power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients’ awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.

Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients’ lives and apply the appropriate skills.
